MycoBag casing, water humidfier
    #2174842 - 12/13/03 03:59 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Ok my first grow will be underway soon.
I purchased a syringe of Golden Teacher spores and gain-based Mycobag.
Still waiting on the spores but I got the bag and fish tank heater.

Here are my questions:

Q1:Using to (identical) rubbermaid containers (the big ones)
and my new 150watt aquarium heater,  what steps to I take to modifiy the rubbermaid to allow the humidity and heat to raise up into the 2nd (top) container?

Q2: After I innoculate my bag and colonization is almost complete,
would I want to poke holes at the substrate level of the bag or cut off the top above the substrate level to increase yelds?

Q3: I read of alot of chambers using air pumps for air circulation,
Assume I'm equipt for the humidifying and heating (rubbermaids stacked w/ water on bottom and aquarium heater) Would an occational opening of the lid every day or two be sufficiant for adiquate air exchange?

I gotton alot of usefull info from this site and forum, it's these minor details that are troubling me.  Any additional info on perfecting my technique w/ the mycobag and rubbermaid water combo would be very very cool.

Thanks!

you name sounds like spunk!

Q1 - nothing. stick the heater on the bottom in a couple inches of water. put the second tub in. that's it!
Q2 - you wanna fruit in the bag? better yield by emptying it out into something you can give better air exchange.
Q3 - not enough for fruiting, no. you'd need to fan at least three times daily. during colonisation, though, you can forget air exchange pretty much

Wow thanks for the quick reply!

As far as question #2, I read on web sites that sell mycobags, that fruiting for some strains can be increased by puncturing at the substrate level and or cutting off the top above the substrate level,
I don't really want to empty the bag into my rubbermaid chamber for risking my cakes or whatever falling apart. Fruiting inside the bag would be easier but then I'm constraining the fruiting dimentions/parameters. This is my first grow and i want learn from other ppls mistakes, not mine. Where I live shrooms are scarce and expensive ($50 per 1/8th easily)

Next, question three, what could i devise to make fanning in the fruiting stage easier? I'm going to have to my 10watt aquarium bulb on a timer, would manual fanning be the best or do I dare devise some invention?

I'm using a digital radioshack Thermometer w/ Hydrometer built in,
If anyone has advice on the Golden Teacher stain please share.

If there is anything I haven't covered or you think I might be forgetting please let me know,

something like this is fun to build. but fanning using the lid is way easier!
GTs are nice - i advise eating 5g on an empty stomach, then going for a long walk
