    #21748355 - 06/01/15 12:50 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

My outdoor pearl Oyster basket is coming along nicely. Just wanted to share with you guys and ask a few questions.

in the second pic what happened to that cluster? it sort of just disintegrated over night. my guess is it just ended it's life cycle and i didn't get to it in time.

if that is the case. are these ready to pick?

They look pretty water-logged, so that may just be an aborted cluster rotting away.  But they could also be getting eaten from the inside out by the nemesis of all outdoor oyster growers (fungus fly larva).  And those little scum suckers seem to have a particular affinity for Pearl Oysters.  Pick now IMO and check the stem bases for maggot holes.  You can still eat them if they're in there, just don't look when you're chopping them up.

Lol ok. A little extra protein can't hurt

Yeah its been nearly non stop rain for the past few days. So that is probably why.

I'll go ahead and pick them.

Thanks

I'll have to second the idea of fungus gnats. They always destroy my outside oysters if I don't harvest early. Not so bad when it cools off in the fall.

Nice basket btw, they always look cool
