Cleaning up a sporesplosion
    #21748290 - 06/01/15 12:34 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So I know everyone has experienced this at one point or another. You slept in or worked late and woke up to a sporesplosion kinda like:

When picking spored up mushrooms I noticed I can wash the spores off my hands by rubbing, so that got me thinking.. could I rub and wash off the spores to make my fruits look more visually appealing?

I did extensive research for teks and what not and some people think you wash out the actives (so not true) others think it'll make them soggy and gross (true if you soak them for an hour or leave them soaking wet on the counter, kind of like any other mushroom...)

Here's what I do when I get a sporesplosion (must be done right when you pick, while everything is still moist and spores aren't dried to the cap). I turn the tap on light and LIGHTLY rub the spores off with my finger/thumb while under the running water. It doesn't have to be perfect.

Here's some photos:

After:

After:

Then they have to get some air on them ASAP. Dehydrator or fan works. Whatever you can't stuff into the dehydrator should get fan dried, at least until the water it soaked in during the rinse gets dried off, or they will get bruised and soggy.

Here's some cleaned fruits after getting dried ASAP. Way better looking than black caps in my opinion.

the first 2 completely dried:

first one:

2nd one:

To sum up, these mushrooms are like any other mushroom. Leave a soaked oyster or portobello on the counter and it'd get soggy too. Cubensis can take the same amount of heat and abuse. Some people even deep fry cubes and cron pressure cooked cubes with no potency difference. The main concern of potency loss is oxidation, that's why you need to dry fruits ASAP!! These aren't the delicate little guys we once thought they were.

The cons to this is it may take longer to dry out your soaked fruits, lowering potency because of it taking longer. Still beats having shitty black ass caps tho. Also if you get it in front of moving air ASAP it may only up the drying times by an hour or so.

I've tried to rinse off casing material and it always bruises the hell out of my stems

I'll post pics of the ones I did in the op when theyre dry, but I rarely get bruising on the stem lol, I also split the stems on anything that's 1g or more. They bruise throughout the stem if they don't get dried fast enough, over getting handled. All those ones in the last pics have had the casing removed via washing and stems split by me with zero bruising. They just get thrown in front of moving air ASAP.

 thanks broski

Haha mushpunx, you're exactly the reason why I wanted to post this  because caps opening and spores dropping don't have to be a bad thing. Just takes a little extra work and the space to dry them.

I just woke up after a long bender last night and found a huge growth spurt had taken place. About ten mushrooms had gotten huge, matured fully and dropped their spores everywhere.

It's funny actually. Here I am neurotically tending to this grow 2-4x a day for months, and then the one day I neglect it everything goes nuts.

My question here, while I'm busy cleaning the picked mushrooms up: Is there anything I can/should do for the tub?

It has spores on most of the surface. There are a few big pins that will most assuredly grow, but I'd like to wash off the spores in an attempt at staving off contamination or the sub pooping out.

Nothing you can do. It'll still pin through the spored up substrate. Spores don't really hurt anything.

Nice, I've been doing something similar when I'm late on a harvest. I take a wet hand towel and bunch it up, put it on the table and just rub the caps on it as I put them in the dehydrator.

 that's a good idea too haha. Would be a great alternative to this if you're still unsure about rinsing. I just clean up the whole stem and the casing too cause I'm picky haha. I like clean mushrooms. For me it seems to work out great.

There was a comment from RR a few years back stating that a spore drop can initiate a dying-off of the sub, as though it's mission is accomplished so it doesn't need to keep growing or creating mushrooms.
It seemed sensible enough to warrant concern.

I don't know. It looks like shit now. I'd be amazed if the tub comes out of this unscathed. Would dunking it do some good?

I don't dunk. I just mist when it's dry, but I'm sure you can dunk. I got trays on 4th flush that are covered in black. It's fine. No need to overreact

The fruits cleaned up nicely. They seem to repel water really effectively. Thank you for putting this up. I imagine they'll taste a lot better now as well!

Dude I seriously couldn't believe people think that. I still find people saying shrooms are poisonous and a friend became a glass of orange juice. I'm like I kinda just want to walk away right now.

As in let them eat/drink up the spores, poop them out and then check back every couple weeks?
