Free Windows 10 Upgrade... Worth it??

So I just got an icon pop up in the bottom right of my task bar on Windows 7, it is an official Microsoft Full Free Upgrade to Windows 10. I don't have a touchscreen and really like Windows 7. Is there any point in downloading it?
It says I can download and choose whether to install it or not, so presumably I could wait and/or save it in case I need a new official version of Windows, either for this machine or another one. (I am guessing if I download it I could use it on another machine??).
Any thoughts or experience of Win 7 vs Win 10 would be very welcome. Seems very generous of Microsoft to give it away free, don't recall ever being offered a free operating system before. Is there some kind of catch? Like I will have to pay to use everyday features etc?
I don't have a smartphone either so have never used an "app" in my life.
Yeah, any thoughts or ideas welcome. Cheers all.

If you like windows 7, havent used a smartphone, and dont have a touchscreen, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT DO IT.
Windows 10 basically tried to merge a phone and computer onto a computer. They got rid of the start button so everything is a pain in the ass to find, and they made the programs run like apps, ao instead of having different windows and clicking out of them, you have entirely different acreens for shit which take forever to load.
Windows 7 is the last great version after xp

This is what I was thinking, I wanted a new laptop a few months back but there was NOTHING with Win 7 available ANYWHERE so I just cleaned the hell out of everything and added some more RAM.
Maybe I'll download it in case anyone I know needs a full, free copy. I used XP for years until Win 7 came out, they are by far the OPS I have used.
Thanks guys, think that settles it. I did some reading and it looks like they may be giving it away free from now on anyway, same as Apple do, incremental upgrades so they can fix bugs without launching a new platform each time.

Win 10 isn't even available yet.. the popup you got was just to register to get it when it's fully released in July or whatever.
I had high hopes for Windows 10.. they said they learned from all the mistakes of Windows 8.. but after watching some videos of it the other day... it LOOKS THE EXACT FUCKING SAME as Windows 8. Which was a horrible clusterfuck of shit. I had hopes they were going to model it closer to 7, but with all the advanced features (DX12 etc) that Windows 10 is supposed to offer. NOPE. Same old retarded ass Windows 8.1 UI that virtually everyone fucking hated. Windows 10 might as well be called Windows 8.5. Fuck you Microsoft.
I'll be sticking with 7.

Download it and see for yourself. This is a technical preview, NOT the finished product. I downloaded this and dual booted it on my Win7 laptop. Within 5 minutes of using it I found that I liked it better than 8.1. MS has brought back some of things that were good about Windows, like a start button and being able to drag and snap windows effectively and easily. That being said, whether I want to upgrade or not has yet to be decided. More than likely I'll stick with 7.

I dunno man. It's a bastardized Win 8.1 start button.

Maybe it sucks... I haven't used it. However, It will reset the end-of-life clock for your operating system. If you pass on the upgrade, Win 7 will eventually stop getting security updates and you'll have to buy whatever version is current at that time.
That's the financial argument.

Still got quite a few years before 7 is out of support. But, I concur that you do need to deeply consider just how much you REALLY need to stay with your old OS because there will be a point where you will have to move forward whether you like it or not and if you really are only sticking with 7 because you know it best and dont like a few quirks of the new one, you might be costing yourself a chunk of cash later.
The free upgrade has a limited time on it also, there is only so many months post release that you can still get it free before you lose the right to it and have to pay.
I'm still torn because I for sure DESPISE 8. I can't use it for shit, I cant ever fix things in it, and I'm a fucking computer engineer, that says something about their UI choices, but with win10 some of my main gripes like the start button are being sort of addressed. Anyone who expected them to just completely ditch their new style choices just isnt paying attention to how the OS business works. The fact that MS is even bastardizing a start menu is the biggest win the users ever could have hoped to have in that fight. MS is specifically trying to push some new UI stuff and they are not going to just ditch all that shit, they will just pump it out until you eventually move forward and like it, or move forward because you gave up and have limited other choices.
Hell, first time I used vista AND win 7, I hated them both because I couldnt find the shit I needed where and when I needed it. The way they changed workgroujps to homegroups and change the control panels around, networking properties was moved and different, etc. I hated it, but since I had no choice I forced myself to use it and found I liked 7 after just a few weeks of angry adjustment. I'm *HOPING* win10 will be a simliar experience. 8 never was. 8 is still pure hate and putrid bile and anger shitting on my chest.

Do you actually need windows for work? Or do you just keep it around for games?

Once it's available I imagine you will be plagued with nag screens to upgrade.... July 29th I think? I'd wait a few months and let everyone else suffer the fallout.......
but yah, I'm upgrading to win10..... eventually..... not gonna beta test some rushed release.....

What you're explaining sounds like windows 8, but I could be wrong. From my understanding, they are bringing back the start button in Windows 10.

My desktop at home is primary a gaming machine. All the other functions are just because computers are neat and can.
Normally for work my job only consists of unix and linux machines, so I run a linux workstation, but my current spot has me admining windows servers in addition, and use a lot of tools that are specific to windows, so windows 7 is my work desktop.
Prior joibs I always ran gentoo with X11 and used some tweaked parts of enlightenment for my window manager.
