Let's talk about untreated coir
    #21746498 - 05/31/15 09:46 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So I remember talk of grows on untreated coir, simply hydrated but can't seem to find definitive examples.

Anyone have any recent experience experimenting?

The general thought was that heat treating coir is mainly to make it more readily digestible so that's why I ask.

I've used un-treated as a casing before with no problem I suspect it would do just as well as the substrate too. I'll try it

Well rumor has it that the culture doesn't run as fast through it but that's kinda contradictoiry as myc usually runs faster through stuff that it can't really eat kinda like using low nutrient agar vs high nutrient agar.

I've never seen any real proof or evidence to say that mycelium doesn't actually have as easy of a time eating coir that's not cooked, and has an easier time eating coir that is cooked. I think most people just cook it out of worry. I've only properly pasteurized coir a handful of times I always sterilize it now. I'll try a run with just hydrated no heat treat coir and see what happens one of these times around.

I would do it myself but all I have are 4qt bags and I use 2 bricks per tub and would hate to throw out 8qts of spawn and that much coir.

Maybe I should just keep enough out to do a small tupperware.
