overcoming a bad trip
    #2174119 - 12/13/03 02:12 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

i seem to be extremely prone to bad trips, so if anyone could please give some experiences and techniques for turning the tables in an experience, it would be appreciated.

my #1 reccomendation, from personal experience, is to have a sitter or friend. but when youre alone and death has wrapped its arms around you, what can you do? techniques to ease the fear and paranoia?

Breathing techniques might help.  Consciously making an effort to take full and slow breaths (perhaps in addition to some nice and mellow music perhaps by the group Amethystium, or other similar artists).  There really isn't a quick mental fix, and everyone will respond differently.  I have myself convinced before I go into a trip that I will be quite tweaked from my usual perspective, so I shouldn't worry if things don't make sense and especially not worry about things I can't control.

Good luck, I know it can be hard sometimes and a psychedelic experience will never be failsafe, as much as we may like or believe it to be - which is why these substances deserve our most serious respect :mushroom2:

always have a bottle of niacniamide pills on hand...
many people find that 100-250 mg will tone a trip way down, and 500 mg will pretty much stop a trip...
ymmv...
~
other stuff:
nice mellowing music on the stereo...
hot tub...
nice cuppa cocoa or tea (some herbal teas can be quite soothing...)
bare feet on the soil can be very "grounding" ...
just crawl inside that sleeping bag & watch the darkness move  ...
chew some vitamin C tablets...
a nice chunk of ginseng can give you a sort of "instant detox" effect...

The most important thing is to be as stress free as possible before the trip.

You must be in a worry free environment! You cannot have any issues at the time that will put you into a negative mind loop.

You cannot have anything pending. Atleast 24 hours free and clear.

Just my opinion.

You just HAVE to be in to mood to be shrooming. If before dosing, you're feeling anxious AND panicky, then you know you shouldn't be dosing because you will focus on that negativity. If you're only feeling anxious, thats ok because people feel anxious for all sorts of reasons, including before going on a particular rollercoaster for the first time, even if they love it.
One thing that I do is remind myself before I get deep into the shroom world is tell myself that im going on a journey because I CHOOSE to, not because I have to.

Just remember, you have to potential to have a good trip, just try to let it happen.

If it becomes too much to handle, you have to stop fighting it. Resisting will only serve to make things worse. Keep telling yourself that everything will be okay, you just have to ride it out till the overwhelmingness passes. It always does pass.

Also, try changing locations. Do something to occupy your mind, or use trip toys etc.

One time I was tripping pretty hard and I thought that maybe my parents were dead, and at the time I had no way to prove that they were alive, and the idea was so torturous that they might be dead that instead of sitting and feeling horrible about that I instead came to terms with their death.

On my most powerful trip ever (4.2 grams) I began freaking out in the middle of it.  I wasn't scared, just insanely confused to the point where it was driving me crazy.  I was just wandering around, saying, "I don't know, I don't know" with an odd sort of grin on my face for about 10 minutes.

It took alot of concentration, but I took a few deep deeeeppp breaths, and then just relaxed and sat down on the floor.  I instructed myself to be calm and go with the flow, and then I was having a fantastic trip again.  Actually that trip was my best one to date.

But I can see how those 10 minutes really could have gotten the best of me if I had let it.

I think the best suggestion I can give, is just try to go with the flow. Don't fight whats happening, take a few deep breaths and know that you are have having the experience of the lifetime.  It sounds too simple, but relax and see where the shrooms take you.

What also helps me, is before the mushies kick in, I meditate and focus my mind for a few moments on what I want to gain out of the trip.  I find that not only does this relax me, but it puts me in a eager and adventurous mindset.  It is, after all, a journey like no other.

Also, a great suggestion is before you trip, get a piece of paper and write "I'm Tripping" on it and put it somewhere you will see it.  Its like a safety net, a reminder that yes, you *are* only tripping and like all things, it will end.

I hoped I helped a little bit, man.  Good luck with it.  Enjoy the experience.

truly,

ShadeGirl

Yes!  I know exactly what you mean.  My one and only LSD experience, there was a time about 4-6 hours in where the phone rang and the lady-friend I was trippin' with wanted to answer it.. but it was the business line for the house so I didn't want to fuck with it.  Ended up waiting and the answering machine picked it up -- it was the lady-friend's mama.  For another three or four minutes I was just really fucking confused (that's really the only way I can describe it, though the words don't give merit to the situation) -- thankfully I just chilled out and let the music play.

Going with the flow ~ definitely a good idea :mushroom2:

I suspect that setting your intention(s) before ingestion could be really key. Going by what's written about affirmations, it's probably important to intentions in a positive, rather than negative way... like, instead of "to learn to let go of irrational fear" you could change that to "to learn to embrace unconditional love".

Experience, will power, and logic work pretty well for me. I've only had one sorta bad trip and I dont think I'll ever have another one now that I've experienced it, I've come close again but its just like I force myself to relax and think 'its just a drug,' 'i cant die,' 'im not crazy' w/e and then I just enjoy it and let go

Things that calm me down if i can't handle it is watching kids cartoons like dragon tails, sagwa, longhouse tails... it helps just to keep your mind off your body and thinking playfull and kind to other people.

Every bad trip makes you stonger as a person. It was meant to happen to build your inner self.

Bad trips are like getting beaten up. If they keep happening then you just have to stop, unless you like getting beaten up. It's simple, maybe this is not the ally for you.

It always seemed to that that fighting the trip can make it bad. So give in to it and don't fight. Experiance always tells me that you'll feel much better after taking a piss.

Fighting the trip will DEFINITELY make it bad. Fighting it turns it into an enemy, and it also happens to be an enemy that can do whatever the hell it wants to your mind.

You might as well give in and let the trip take you where it was meant to take you.
