How much can you conceal ?

Hey guys. Been awhile. Going to return to the hobby, but moved back home for a bit - I like to grow to bulk in a monotub.
I was wondering if it were possible to put a monotub inside another tub that is opaque - would it be okay to put the lid on? Would some holes or something need to be made so there is proper ventilation and exchange? Also in regards to colonizing jars before hand, could I keep jars in an opaque tub?
Not sure how it effects it, since the lids to tubs don't seem to be an air tight seal....primarily thought there would be a benefit (completely dark during colonization) and also easy to conceal/stack up and possibly a small extra security to keep things out? But mainly want to hide them, not that anyone would be digging through my closet but you know how questionable a bunch of jars looks, so it would be ideal if I could cover them inside a tub. If not that, any alternatives that serve the same purpose? Such as throwing a black garbage bag over the tub/jars etc?
Oh, How I miss living away from family :P

Stealth and mushrooms rarely works out well for a lot of reasons. Growing without the knowledge of all people living with you is a dick move.

Don't fuck your roommates/family over. also it's hard to get proper FAE in a stealth setup.

Yeah the FAE is what I was worrying about, truthfully wanted to try a small tub for just myself ...or maybe invitro, but I will reconsider, I didn't really think about it that way, used to being able to grow when I want.

Search for Stonesun's guide on stone's, those can sit on a shelf but still you shouldn't hide that kind of stuff from other people you live with.

Mushrooms need lots of fresh air and light. Those things are hard to provide properly in a stealth setting.

Another note, kept my spores sealed in a box for 2, going on three years. syringes and foil prints in envelope or ziplock - should be all right? I am pretty sure I got some from marketplace I never even used yet! And how long could they continue being stored?
Also, the light is for after you're done colonizing but yes, you'll need to take them out eventually.

Ah, okay. At some point I want to start some edible mushrooms so this information will be useful later!
Off topic.. What are those tasty mushrooms that Chinese restaurants seem to never run out of?

Light is beneficial for all stages of growth. Darkness for colonization is old info. Spores will lose viability over time but they should still be good.

I wanna say straw mushrooms? and oysters? The introduction of light tells the shrooms it's time to come out.

Umm that could be a number of species. Oysters, enoki and shiitake are popular. I can't grow oysters and I never tried shiitake but I love enoki. I should grow some again.

I am just saying from personal experience, that adding a bit of light made my jars/tubs pin early....Only got a chance once where I consciously kept them in the dark and the result seemed more 'even'. Though I am curious about it, how do you go about giving some beneficial light during colonization period?

No. Light is not a pinning trigger for cubes. End. Only ambient light is needed so just put em on a shelf.

It's a secondary pinning trigger actually. But you're not gonna make something pin just by introducing light. #1 trigger is running out of food.

I won't really get into the role of light here but I will say that after a fair amount of study on the subject I am becoming less convinced that light stimulates any tropisim whatsoever. The idea that there are secondary tier tropisims is something I also have issue with. Its more of an order from what I have read. Thus far the fact that decent pinsets can be obtained in the absence of light leads me to believe that its not a tropisim for pinning response at all and certainly if there was a secondary pinning tropisim for cubensis it would be introduction of FAE which actually does have an impact on pinset.

I wonder then, could it be not the light that made them pin early but like air from opening cabinet? Also the ones that pinned early were brf, not rye berries which is what I ended up sticking with ultimately.

I doubt it. The primary trigger is full colonization of the sub.

Definitely had pins on cakes when they weren't fully colonized, but thanks, must be lack of food in a brf mix or something! Always learning here, I appreciate it. Not gonna drag this thread on any longer.

It was more likely that the sub wasn't accessible due to compaction, water content or contam.
I should elaborate that cubes do experience a tropic response to light in direction of cap orientation and consequantially growth follows. Its phototropism and is usually expressed after the pinset is in and the fruits begin to grow. Like most tropisims it has a start and end point. From my observation its engaged after pinset is established and rremains until just before sporulation. At that point gravotropism kicks in.

I did a stealth grow for a few months, my bed was a couple feet off the floor and against a wall with a plug so I had a good amount of space underneath to deal with, had everything I needed and more there

Because they have their mind set on growing mushrooms, when in fact most of them just want to growing something "active" -so they should really be thinking of growing sclerotia, aka stones.

Just grow stones. You can hide a large amount without ever needing to tend to it
