Elitism? Nope.
    #2173359 - 12/12/03 04:48 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Okay... if someone isn't funny, it's okay to say that they aren't funny. And, regardless of its validity, it isn't wrong to claim that most people aren't funny.
Likewise, it's acceptable to claim that an obese man is not healthy.
It's also perfectly fine to claim that someone has poor driving skills.
And so on and so forth...

My point...
(Note: no belittling here; this wouldn't be said to anyone's face... we're talking hypotheticals)
When one acknowledges a person's or group's mental improficiency, is one then necessarily guilty of elitism?

I don't think its elitist to recognize a person's improficiency in some area, but it is elitist to believe that you deserve more happiness than that person because of their shortcomings.

To me, it boils down to how you consciously perceive a person's shortcomings. If you view others' problems as something that can be learned from, or as an opportunity to practice compassion, then that is just another way of growing as a person. But if you use others' shortcomings to swell your pride in your own perceived superiority, or to justify why you're better off than them, then it crosses over into being elitist.

So no, acknowledging a person or group's mental improficiency doesn't make you guilty of elitism. Its all about what kind of thoughts come along with that acknowledgment. Peace!

Who are you or I or any of us to judge 'mental improficiency'?
I can disagree with someone, disagree vehemently, in fatc.  But that doesn't make anyone right or wrong.

If someone took to hammering nails through their crotch, people'd probably say they were daft.  But sexual masocists (or however that's spelt) seem to enjoy that kinda thing.  It's probably a very intense experience, maybe even worth doing.

Elitism may have been the wrong word for me to use, Sclorch, being as it's already so loaded with different meanings for different people.  What I meant to convey was "Your argument is mentally improficient."
:smirk: :smirk: :smirk:
But I kid...

I think it comes down to stating a fact, and it can be misinterpreted, like the time I said to a judge, in front of several lawyers, that Mexicans like to shoot their guns when celebrating. I was berated for being a racist and for stereotyping.

Well, I was probably stereotyping a bit, but I'm not a racist. Some of my best friends are Mexicans.

Anyways, I've lived around Mexicans, and they do like to shoot their guns when celebrating. I don't know of another race or culture that does that, here in So. Cal.

(If you see "Barney" as my avatar, just ignore him. I think someone is playing games with me.)

And they stereotyped you off of one statement that you made, for different intentions than they picked up on. People are too quick to judge.. especially judges.

Ahh, ja, there is a stereotype, as I am sure that some judges carefully consider everything and so forth, or something...

Yeah, making no judgements can get pretty intense. Before you know it you're not abstracting anything from anything.
Then you end up like "Well, who's to say my legs want me to walk? I've never asked them, nor can I, but it seems mean to force them to do something they might not like!" It's fun for a bit, but it gets old. And you don't go much of anywhere.

Needless to say, I make certain judgements and (possibly unwarranted) assumptions when I'm in public, like 'Up isn't down' and 'Getting hit by buses isn't fun'. But a total lack of abstraction is one of the ways to achieve enlightment, depending on who you ask.

Why all these threads about black people?

You think black people are dumb?

That's just racist talk. I take umbrage at that statement.

I was joking. Some people get offended and take things personally when that isn't the case at all.

My humor is so dry and sarcastic at times that few, if any, get it. All of my replies to Swami in his Sweat Lodge thread were jokes. In nearly every case I meant the complete opposite or was poking fun at a philosophical stance/position.

Sorry for the confusion. It's a way I entertain myself.

Exactly.

I sometimes visit OTD and a group in a thread will be laughing there ass off and I just don't get it. Well I usually get it, I just don't find it funny.

Sometimes I'll say something and someone will laugh there ass off and I'll be like,"WTF, I was serious!".....

LF: Why focus on other people's short comings?

Whirr, CLUNK.... Reading comprehension error!
I said nothing of focusing on anyone's shortcomings.
I only asked why so many find it wrong to notice said shortcomings.

LF: It's just your opinion anyway weither someone is funny or not BTW.

You're right. And some people might think that getting their hand crushed with a sledgehammer is funny...

I adapt, therefore I am heteroabsolute.
I think I'll make that my new sig.

I think most people who find it objectionable to comment on other people's shortcomings do so because they realize that any shortcomings are relative, and reflect a lack of acceptance on the part of the noticer more than any deficiency in the object of scorn.  Others' shortcomings reflect your mind's own.  I'd rather object to something because I find it hateful, obnoxious, arrogant, distasteful or somesuch thing than because I find it stupid or mentally improficient.  If we're going to object to everything that's stupid, then that's a LOT of objecting, and lots of stupid things are also quite nice.  Such as ingesting chemicals that harm one's body in order in enhance one's mind when that mental enhancement could likely be accomplished by meditation and reflection or achieving enlightenment or whatever.  I ingest those chemicals anyways.  Why?  Because it's fun.  And stupid.  Yay!  :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:
