The Hunt for an Albino Sequoiadendron 2015

It begins...
 Start by soaking the seeds for 24 hours in the fridge.
 Then after 24 hours put the seeds in paper towels ( I double up the towels like this. Two towels folded twice)

Then into a glad cup with the lid RESTING on top (plastic bag works too)

First one.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coastal redwood Got some cones in the mail yesterday from one of our own and I'm pretty impressed, not even gonna rip apart the 4th one. There were a good amount of seeds I haven't counted yet but I'd guess from 3 cones I got at least 200 good seeds. It's a different species so that could be why the seeds are smaller, there were some clearly underdeveloped seeds that got tossed. Here's some pics from the dissection.
That's a pretty decent article. I will say that the numbers cited in various articles differ significantly, some like this say there are as few as 25 known albinos, others say there are as many as 100; either way the numbers are low and I'll likely have to germinate 1000's of seeds in order to get one albino (and at that it'll be fragile).
Just planted like 25 more seeds, fingers crossed. I'll have some cool pics in a week or so but here's the first seedling emerging
Wow, that is a nice shade of purple. Is that their normal color, or the mutation you were looking for??
Dude you know you're gonna have to graft that to keep it alive right?
The only reason there are fully grown albino Sequoias is because a normal sequoia grew at a regular rate with the albino genetics within it. As it grew it produced offshoots or suckers as some call them growing from the roots that feed from the nutrients the normal plant produced. That's why they call them vampire Sequoias.
Look it up if you didn't already know this.
I wish you the greatest luck in your endeavors buddy
It's in a planter with 6 others so I'm hoping it'll be good. If not at least I got to see one. Thanks for the good vibes space.
Well it's just an albino sprout from seed produced with those genetics. It will not survive unless you find a way to graft it to a normal rootstock with the ability to do photosynthesis. I really wanna see this grow so please do some studying and find a way to allow it to survive.
PLEASE do so. you can do it.
Honestly I think I've done all I can I just planted two seeds ( one on each side) very close to it with the hopes of the roots meeting faster. Here's the set up.
Well as an update the sprout die. So far the results are out of 550 or so seeds 130 sprouted and continue to grow, many others died from whatever it may have been. 1 suspected albino/variegated giant sequioa. For the purpose of this experiment all seeds will be sown in a large tray to better allow the occasional mutant to graft roots, instead of letting them germinate in the napkin.
