Help ID! Gymnopilus found along river banks and another mushroom
    #21745555 - 05/31/15 05:15 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys! Went on a three hour walk alongside a river in Georgia. Found a few types of mushrooms. What kind of gyms are these? Also are the others Pluteus?

Gyms found on a broken hardwood limb and another dead hardwood log.

Tasted a piece of the gyms and they were extremely bitter. The on gym with the white stuff on the stem at the base had a definite and I mean straight up bright neon green blue dry stain. After handling it dissapeared like it was never there. Thanks you experts! Want to know if they are safe to trip on...

Those look like the inactive gymns I find here, and I think the others are pluteus, but I've never found any quit like that,so I'll go with maybe.

Id agree with that had I not found skyblue brusing at the base of one where the base was attatched to the mycelium. Wish Id have taken pics of it didnt have my phone though...

They also bruise black after drying and handling. Maybe sapineus.

When I first saw them I thought they were junonius, but I see no annulus. I also see no scales on the cap, but the pics are kind of blurry. I'd say the gyms are inactive, and I don't even know if they are gyms. The second ones look a lot like pluteus to me, but I am not very good at identifying pluteus. It seems like there are tons of mushrooms that have the same general profile as most pluteus species.

I'm almost positive those are the same inactive gymns I find here.
They bruise black, and sometimes fool you with greenish tinges on the caps.

I've never found any gyms, but another thing is that they look very dark compared to junonius. They look kind of dry, so it could be from that, or maybe it's the lighting:shrug:
The pluteus was a good guess though boom. Like I said I don't know much about them, but they look like Pluteus cyanopus.  The gills look free to me, but the stipe is somewhat blocking the view. The cap looks like the right color from pictures in the mushroom info section. Hopefully you found em:awesomenod:

It's not the season for Pluteus cyanopus,it's not until late July and August, plus they bruise dark blue and are active.

I still have some pics of mine from a few years back, and they don't look anything like those,no offense.

I also have pics of those gymns that I think are what he has too!

I agree they do look alot like those in your picture. But there was a definite presence of the oxidation of psilocybin at the base of one specimen. I even let my friend see it. Almost instead of it being in the flesh it was on it. I dont think they are inactive, maybe extremely low dose psilocybin but not inactive. Did you ingest your specimens?

And I totally agree that the others arent pluteus.

I actually don't eat active mushrooms anymore,it never was my thing.

I tried them several times when I was living in Florida, but I didn't like that feeling at all.

That was close to 10 years ago.

That being said,I still collect actives when I find them, for buddies, and My buddy ate tons of those gymns on several occasions, and he got nothing from them.

My focus is edible and medicinal mushrooms now:thumbup:

Now those bluing pluteus my buddy loved, and he said they were some potent ass mushrooms!

That blueing is unreal:eek: Your friend had a blast I'm sure lol

Boom, If you say they were blueing, than they might be active:shrug: A picture can't describe what you see in person, so it can be hard for us to tell. At least you know you're looking in the right spots though:thumbup:

I have never found any more that blued that intensely, nor have I found anymore specimens since I took those pics.

They were fairly common in the old area of kentucky I live at,but I have never found any in my new area I moved too.

My buddy started tripping within 20 minutes,no crap, and he laid down in the floor!

I knew then,he was gone:lol:

Lol. Yeah Ive seen some extremely potent cubies in the field. Ive seen a couple grow outright blue. One time on an especially hot August afternoon I went to the feild and picked lots of dry mush. But what caught my eye were two pins side by side an inch thick and a couple inches long. They were as blue as could be. Long story short I ate one pin and it took me on an intense four+ hr journey. But yeah thats nice staining for pluteus most def.
