sgfc and mono tub question

I have been searching but cant find the info that I want so here it is
I have noticed that for cakes people use sgfc and for bulk mono tubs
My question is could or has someone used a sgfc style with bulk, drilling 1/4 inch holes starting at about 4 inch from the bottom and continuing the grid on 5 sides?
What would be the advantage/disadvantages of a setup like this?
I understand that this way it wouldn't work like a sgfc as far as drawing moisture from the bottom but figured I should ask someone more knowledgeable than this noob

Doc_T tried that for a while. It doesn't work well.

Did it pull to much moisture out of the bulk?
I have a couple sgfc that I am trying to find a use for, guess I can tape and redrill them

Have you thought about trying to use the cakes to colonize a grain. And then use that nutrient rich grain to colonize a mono tub that you can get several flushes from. Wild bird seed is very resistant to contams just take the sunflower seeds out and be sterile of course.

Cakes? Who said anything about cakes?
I was asking about using bulk in a (kina sorta) sgfc type tub trying to figure out if it would or wouldn't produce results and why or why not.

I use something similar

Doc t's design evaporated to much moisture. I have never used a regular mono tub. I use something similar flipped upside down to fruit trays in . Cubes will grow anywhere as long as u can control temp and airflow.

A sgfc works on the principle that the perlite in the chamber is humidifying the air coming in, that supplies the humidity. A mono relys on the bulk sub to supply the humidity. With Doc Ts crappy set up the sub was constantly loosing humidity and the only way to replace it was via misting. Personally I like monos because I don't need to mist them depending on how I dial them in. I certainly don't have time to mist them a dozen times a day to keep it from drying out.
If you want to have a look at some alterative setups that allow for more FAE than a traditional mono there are a few that are discussed in the mini monos link in my sig.

Thanks, I was just trying to figure out the technical part of it (i like to understand why something works not just how), is it hard to dial in a mono?

No. If you use a standard design we can help you just with a few pictures. Monos are pretty forgiving.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it's optimal. I've seen tiny little mushrooms on agar before. Your pinset in that pic says your conditions aren't great.
