Back when I was a tweaker it was always easy to go a few days or even a week without getting high but after a little bit of normalcy it is easy to go straight back to old habits and even go harder.
Yup yup, that is the shit I'm struggling with right now, and PAWS can last months, fucking months!
Everytime I go back to use it is crazier than the last.

It can be up too, people generally go through 7 day, 14 day and 30 day dips for the first month, and then potentially a 14/30 day dip in serotonin/dopeamine levels, it can take six months up to three years for healthy and natural levels to return, in Meth's case anyways, opiate PAWS tend to be up to a year max.

Three years? Yah right! Maybe if you have no self control whatsoever.
I quit meth in the beginning of 2012. I relapsed once five months later and got so physically ill after it and haven't even had one single craving since. Not saying it's going going be like that for everyone but three years? Really?

Yeah man, some people's brains get totally fucked by it, it can take up to three years for dopeamine production to be back to a normal level, some people get permanently fucked by it if their taking MAOI's while abusing amphetamines.
I can try and source it if you want.

It's true, meth fucks up your brain for a long fuckin' time.
http://www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/pubaf/pr/2001/bnlpr120101b.htm
Quote:
“Methamphetamine is a particularly problematic, highly addictive drug,” said Nora Volkow, who led the study with Linda Chang. Their team had previously shown that methamphetamine abusers have significantly depleted levels of dopamine transporters. These proteins, found on the terminals of some brain cells, recycle dopamine, a brain chemical associated with pleasure and reward and also essential for movement. The study also found that meth abusers had impaired cognitive and motor function
Quote:
The main finding was that, in methamphetamine abusers who were able to stay drug-free for at least 9 months, dopamine transporter levels showed significant improvement, approaching the level observed in control subjects. In abusers studied within 6 and after 9 months, the longer the period between the first and second evaluation, the larger the increase in dopamine transporter levels. Cognitive and motor function showed a trend toward improvement on some tests, but these changes were not statistically significant.

here's a good quick read on acute withdrawal and post-acute withdrawl (paws). http://store.samhsa.gov/shin/content/SMA10-4554/SMA10-4554.pdf
it sneaks up on you when you don't expect it, then you take another hit thinking you're fine doing so. Tons of people do it thinking they'll be fine.... then they hit it again... It's not a fairy tale, and knowing your enemy is half the battle. Read up on a topic and you can beat it into submission, even the topic of how to quit specific drugs. I remember when it hit me that the meff was out of my head. it was about a year and a half after i quit and my head was resting in my girlfriend's lap, looking up and it just hit me. Like a shit brickhouse of realization. Like the way a drug hits you hard on the come-up, but it was the exact opposite. I hadn't even thought of meff in so long, but I knew exactly what it was when I felt it and it was purely freeing. ::sings freebird::
and btw, this thread is exactly what i needed today. i'm so glad to have come across it.

Can't imagine being addicted to meth. My worst habit right now is going out to bars and getting drunk. I've can't afford it anymore. Shit's becoming way too costly.

Modestmouse, I'm proud of you.
I'm doing the same and although last week was pretty rough, it wasn't as bad as the week before. I'm starting to feel more like myself and it feels really good.
Im getting my energy back, thinking straight, etc.

so like in AA they have a clean date, if I stop in the next day or two I will actually have to write it down so I know. It would be cool to have the same clean date as someone else. I have never had long term sobriety. I stopped smoking weed but starting drinking in my mid twenties when I started dating a cop. I was clean for years while we lived together but I drank so I have never had any long term sobriety since age 18.
It will be interesting to see what kind of person I am without drugs and booze. I should be pretty damn smart when it comes to life experience, having put myself through hell most of my life. Lol I'll be 34 in July. I'm rare having never been married and dont have a kid. I dont know many people past age 30 without baggage.
if all goes as well, i'll be a different sprinkles for sure. Could be a good or bad depends mostly on how angry I am clean and sober, and if I can find some healthier way of dealing with anger.. I needs an outlet.

You have a positive out-look right now, hold onto that shit and don't let go.
Staying positive and remembering why sobriety is better under current circumstances is critical for long-term sobriety, atleast in my experience and opinion.
I wish you the best of luck mate' shit is rough.
