Spawning rate variations.
    #21745078 - 05/31/15 02:57 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I've read on this message board people talking about oysters at 1:4 (20%) spawning rate and I've talked to commercial growers who spawn oysters at under 2% with incredible success.

How is there such a variation achieving basically the same results? Is it the substrate nutrition and/or supplements making up the difference?

Any educated thoughts on this would be awesome!

Bumping this old thread because I have the identical question and came upon this thread while searching for an answer.

Anyone with more experience that could share some insight on this?

I've came across this article by PennState Extension that states for Pleurotus cornucopiae : "By using a spawn rate of 5 percent of the wet substrate weight, it is possible to reduce the time to production by more than 7 days compared to a spawn rate of 1.25 percent."

If I were commercial, time is money. More turns means less facilities( fruiting) more money. Of course you would have to crunch the numbers spawn is not cheap. Spawn in the form of grain is supplementation. So if you spawn at 20% or supplement your substrate at 20% it is essentially the same other than the fact that more spawn should equal faster colonization and more turns.

ah ok I see I was not looking at it from a supplementation point of view. I was thinking the amount of mycelium would effect the growth rate somehow. So i figure optimizing for spawning amount is a matter of optimizing cost of spawn material versus supplement material

That's also true, the more points of mycelium growing means a faster spread.
