To phase I or not to phase II?
    #21744829 - 05/31/15 01:26 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

We've been growing oysters on straw and going straight to phase II hot water bath pasteuruzation.

We've never considered adding a phase I regiment as it seems like a lot of excess labor.

Does anyone here do phase I composting with straw for oysters and if so, what are the benefits? I imagine the yields would be higher due to a better formulated substrate but is it worth the extra time and effort?

No.
But then I get 20-25% yield on lime pasteurised straw.

When growing oysters Phase one is only used partially when you can make a very large pile. It is used to pre- heat the material up to save on the cost of heating when you are utilizing steam. You can also do this with the sun.

With hot water there is no need.

How did you calculate your 20-25% yield? Do you add supplements or additives of any kind?

So if, at some stage, I switched to steam pasteurization it may be useful?

Yeah but you need a very large pile indeed as stated above

5kg of mush from 20kg of sub is 25% wet yield. At the moment it is about 18% on the first flush and then rest in next one or two depending on how good the blocks look.

Straight straw, lime pasteurised. 2 day drain. Mycelia 2191 at 3.5%.
