Fruiting Mex & Tamp
    #21744709 - 05/31/15 12:48 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hi all,

I currently have about a qt. of grains colonised with Ps. Mexicana and another qt. of Tampanensis.

I'd like to fruit both of them, and I have the following at my disposal:

1 big SGFC with 2-3 inches of perlite

2 Small-ish monotubs

A few bricks of coir (no hpoo or peat moss where I'm at)

Vermiculite

So, should I make some bulk 50/50 substrate with the coir and verm and spawn it?
And then, is it monotub or SGFC ?

Thanks!

I would shoot for more like an 80/20 mix of coir/verm.....just like any other tek calls for......

I would go monotub.

Thanks! about the 20/80, I was searching the forums and found a comment by RR saying that upping the verm ratio to 50/50 might increase yield.

Yea, might.....but by how much?

You can pull an entire pound(or really close to it) off a monotub with an 80/20 mix and good genetics.......

Do I need casing for that? I'm asking because I can't get peat moss where I'm at.

Can you get jiffy mix even? You can use coir and Verm as a casing if that's all you have.

Jiffy mix is a possibility, would that do for casing?

What about wax paper?

Well the wax paper will eventually have to be removed.

Jiffy mix and Verm will work as long as it's properly pasteurized.

What ration would you recommend for casing, Jiffy mix and verm 50/50 ?

Yes, 50/50 is just right: Easy Casing Layer

Thanks,

But alas, I could not find Jiffy mix anywhere.

This is so frustrating, there's got to be a substitute to peat..
What if I cover the colonised bulk with waxpaper, would that do?

Cubes don't need a casing ime. They'll fruit just fine without one.

So it seems, however I'm growing Ps. Mexicana and Ps. Tampanensis, so as far as I know - casing would be a must here.

Wow  :facepalm3:  I've got to stop late night answering threads, they all blend together after a while lol. I was looking at so many cube threads...

Disregard my casing comment. Sorry, I can't help you. As I said, I don't case.

Just use verm. Coir is too nutritious. Or go find some peat, it's everywhere. Fucking Walmart sells it.

In a desperate move, I shredded the forest-moss I bought a while ago (those greenish hairs that you use to decorate reptile terrariums), sifted it and used just the finest particles instead of peat moss.

I will case with it soon and report back.

Don't do that, just use verm, like I said before.

Any particular reason for it not to work? I mean, the forest moss does retain water quite well, and since it's shredded to dust, the texture is quite similar to peat moss.

Obviously I wouldn't mind using just plain verm (much less work) but I saw a comment by RR a while ago saying that plain verm has almost no significance.

Have you had success fruiting Mexicanas with just verm for casing?

You don't know the composition of that moss. It may need buffered, and you don't know how much water it holds/releases. It might work but you'd have to experiment.

RR isn't the end-all-be-all of mushrooms. I haven't fruited Mexicana with plain verm casing but I have fruited Pans and Galindoi with it.

Fair enough. I did my best with the casing prep, adding gypsum and hydrated lime etc.
So I guess I'll case some of the mini-tubs with plain verm and some with moss + verm.

Now about RR, isn't he the closest thing to end-all-be-all of mushrooms, at least for us shroomery folks?

Nope. I'm not saying he doesn't know what he's talking about but he really does shit the hard way. I trust RR's advice to work, but I've seen more impressive flushes and info from Workman. AFAIK, and I may be wrong, but RR doesn't have a mycology degree. Workman does and is active in the active community.

For pumping out mass amounts of Cubes, listen to Frank Horrigan. For more in depth shit, RR is good, Workman is better.

I went through Frank's teks, very well made. I don't see him stray from RR's instructions much, it looks like his teks are based on RR's.

Thanks again for your help.
