Oysters on Scott's Mulch in grocery bags * 7
    #21744280 - 05/31/15 09:55 AM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Do you have plastic grocery bags from your grocery shopping? Is there a garden store near you? I used recycled plastic grocery bags, Scott's brand wood mulch(5$) and some clean oyster spawn to grow some oysters.

Colonized Oyster Spawn

Scott's mulch 5$ at walmart, lowes, home depot, most garden stores.

home depot also has this organic mulch in certain areas.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Great-Gardens-2-cu-ft-100-Organic-Mulch-660-1033/205940596?MERCH=REC-_-NavPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-205940596-_-N

grocery bag from grocery store

Procedure:

You can use this mulch right out of the bag.  Generally it has perfect moisture content when bought in the store.  In this write up the bag used was several years old so it had to be rehydrated.

1. The mulch was placed in a large bowl. Warm water was filled above the level of the mulch.

2. A strainer and white bowl filled with water were placed on top to hold the mulch under the water for an hour.

3. After an hour the mulch was poured into the strainer and left out to strain for 10 minutes.

4. All supplies were setup for spawning. This included a large spoon, oyster spawn, soaked wood chips, plastic grocery bags. A clean work space.

5. Spawn was broken up with a spoon.

6. I laid down 1-2" of mulch flat in the grocery bag.

7. A few spoon fulls of spawn were laid out evenly on the mulch layer. Several layers of spawn then mulch were layered to fill the bag. A top layer of spawn is left to end the spawning session.

8. The bag is tied and left to colonize for a few days.

9. After several days the bags colonized.

10. After a few more days 2 inch holes were cut around the sides of the bags. After 2 days pins began to develop. Once clusters matured, the bag cut was placed around the cluster so that the cluster was exposed to open air.

11. When i walk by I spray tap water manually with a spray bottle directly on the fruits several times a day. That's it.

12. After a few more days, fruits.

Same Culture a year earlier. This culture is from a liquid culture syringe from 2007. The syringe is stored in a dorm fridge. Only 1cc was used to inoculate a plate of agar. That plate was dropped into a grain master. That master was g2ged to colonize the grain jars.

13. After harvest ill flood the bag for an hour. pour off the water and sit the bag back in the area it fruits in for a 2nd and 3rd flush.

Lately, I have been pouring water into the bags for a daily watering to maintain moisture inside the bag. the open air can dry out the fruits if you can't mist a few times a day.

did you initiate pinning by draping a wet towel around the bag?

it's nice to have oyster pinning by itself. I always have a hard time with our dry climate around here.

looks awesome! My only critique is you should try to find un dyed mulch. They spray chemicals onto the chips to achieve those colors. The shred on that wood looks awesome for myc!!

I've hunted around the net about the dye in EarthGro
Mostly I find reports it is vegetable based dye

Good to hear! Good substrate for city dwellers where bales of hay or wood chips are hard to find.

More info from Scotts re EarthGro... (plus Eat isn't dead yet and I think he has been eating his Scotts EarthGro Oysters... right Eat? Eat? Eat are you OK?!)

This from a chat with Scotts Customer service today:

Paul: Hello, how may I help you today?
Psilo: I stepped a way from my desk for a few minutes while waiting for a response from the last chat. The question I asked about food safety was not adequately addressed: See below - Simone: Hello, how may I help you today? Psilo: Hi I have recently purchased EarthGro mulch (red) and I am quite interested in knowing what the dye is made of. You see, I have mulched flower beds, but I have also mulched garden beds, and I am even growing oyster mushrooms on some of the EarthGro Red mulch. In the latter two applications it is quite possible that dye could make its way into vegetables / mushrooms. I have read in places on the internet that the dye used in EarthGro is natural / vegetable based and would be safe around animals (I assume this means people and pets). Please advise. Thank you. Simone: I would be happy to look that up for you. Simone: Mulch colorants are water-based coatings made with pigments, man made additives and polymers that are common. Simone: Is there anything else I can help you with? Simone: It appears that you are idle or away and we will be closing this chat session now. If you have any further questions please begin a new session.

Paul: The colorants are made of the same type of water based dyes you will find in cosmetics and personal care items.
Psilo: So is legal requiring that you do not give a specific response to the question of food safety?
Psilo: That is if vegetables were grown in close proximity to these products and dye washed off and was absorbed into the root system - would the vegetables be safe for human consumption?
Paul: This product is safe to use around edibles as long as you do not till it into the soil or use it in planting holes. This is because the mulch can rob the soil of Nitrogen. If you will provide me wuith an email address I can send you the MSDS for this product.

I'm trying this with a mixture of hickory and cherry wood chips. OP how much spawn did you use? I used 6 half pints of brf and it looks good needs couple more days tho to fully colonize.

1.5-2 quarts spawn per bag. a little high ratio for oysters.

This is the easiest way to grow oysters. This may be my first successful oyster grow. I tried growinh then before but failed due to some green mold

keep trying. once you get the hang of it, its easy. if your getting metabolites its possible that your grain has some bacteria in it. did you have heavy metabolites on your last oyster grow?

was the mold during fruiting?

Do you have to cut holes after pins start showing or can I do it before?

i usually wait until a cluster forms. you can visibly see it from the side of the bag. ill then cut a hole around it. although ive seen it done both ways.

Any luck on a SDS for the dye? The food colors used in american food is from petroleum and outlawed in the EU for food products. I think the bottom line is dyed mulch works well, but natural undyed mulch is always a safe bet.

Would Scott's Mulch work good with King Oysters in a bucket?

i have not tried them with king oysters. so couldn't give you a direct answer. you could try it. i was reading that kings will grow on newspaper so i don't see why they wouldn't off of wood mulch.

here are updates. pins. cut 2 inch holes around the side of the bag.

if your not seeing pin clusters yet. cut two inch holes around the side of the bag randomly. a day or two later you will see clusters.

what temps are your fruiting temps? i don't think you need to. fae makes the difference for oysters.

here are some updated clusters on 3 bags. been hosing these down directly on the fruits as often as i walk by the table. i put a plastic table cloth and a towel down under the bags.

great please update us. make sure once the clusters mature a little to push the plastic holes around them. it should fit nice and snug.

here are some updates. make sure to mist under the clusters as well. in the past, ive had drying due to misting the top of the cluster. the pins on bottom won't get as much moisture so ill spray in an upward motion towards the bottom of the cluster. i just watered my bags and sprayed the clusters. here is a pic after.

Just grabbed a bag of mulch from Walmart.  Holy shit this is a big bag!

Going to try mulch in a bucket and a grocery bag with my King Oyster spawn once my jars colonize.  I'll try to post some pictures and let you guys know how it goes.

better to cut holes in the bag around the cluster. keep the moisture in the substrate block itself. unless you have something that will keep the rh up or your ambient rh is 65% plus. these blues love the moisture. if they aren't watered a few times daily they show signs of drying. if you look at some of the above pics i posted, you will see some drying on the base of the clusters where the smaller pins didn't get enough moisture on them. culture's tolerance for conditions may vary.

How'd they taste?
This thread's got me planning to try it with some pinks.
Especially if you said they can grow in 90 °F peak temps.
I'll just line them all up in the garage and make Oysters for the whole neighborhood! :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

I'll keep mine inside for the summer then, but with such a short colonization time in the grocery bags....
Like I said, I got excited. My grain jars are in the PC right now. lol

yeah i mean the volume of substrate is much lower than a large bucket with straw. so don't expect the high yield. but for personal indoor grow its very easy. i like the ease of it. i don't have to prep any straw. and home depot has organic mulch as well. i updated the op with the link to the product.

While looking up grows for oysters, it seemed like EVERYBODY is using straw or something unnecessarily costly.
I'm glad to find this grow you did on mulch, because I can't find straw anywhere near me.
Not at feed stores, not at gardening stores, can't find them on a train, can't find them on a plane.....

All that's down here is hay, and I've read a large number of negative reviews about using hay and that it will never work.
So to find out that I can avoid the annoying pasteurization step AND the annoying source-the-straw step by using mulch...
I guess this is just a build-up to a big thank you for trying this out on supplies I already have around the house.

On a side-note, anytime I can recycle something (like grocery bags), I feel twice as good about what I'm growing.
I'm happy I may never know the lack-of-joys that come along with that pasteur step. lol

Thanks, again, Yu:dancer:

yes one of the reasons i use it. straw is cheap though when you have it available. micheals sometimes carries the small bales. but most of  the time the bales are older.

you can also use recycled news paper from this method. ive read the ink on newspaper is plant material based.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15164650#15164650

also, you don't even have to use the bleach soak. you can simply use warm water like this thread.

now the yields on newspaper are smaller than lets say straw. but if you do a large enough volume to match the size of substrate a 5 gallon bucket would have. yield could be similar. but i think large volumes of straw would be much easier prep than newspaper. you have to layer the newspaper at spawning. which is more time consuming than using large volumes of straw.

"Lowe's Hardware", "Home Depot", and "Wal Mart" all carry straw bales, and if they don't carry straw bales in store they can be ordered by yourself, or the store to be delivered to the store's location nearest you.

Damn man, sorry about that.  All that stuff can be ordered here in this hood in the fashion/manner described.  Never considered that one wouldn't be able to get those supplies shipped to certain locations in the country.

I just got my grain jars noc'd up today, so I'm going to try newspaper and mulch with Golden and Pink Oysters once they're ready.
I saw a youtube video of an old man in the woods giving lessons on layering newspaper with straw and I can't get it out of my head. Each, the newspaper and the mulch, are practically free, so whichever yields the best is the method I'll store in my notebook

Thanks for the advice, but they all give me the same response.
Something about a drought a while back that's changed the locations they send straw due to a shortage or something.
I'll just save Straw as something new and classic that I can try later on in life when I move on to another state

man sounds like you need a heavy duty metal spray bottle. it took about a week for the 2nd flush to begin. the bags were dunked in water for an hour. then the water was poured off and the bag was placed back on the table.

I recently got a bunch of contams on my agar, which has never happened. I almost wonder if my spray bottle contaminated from just sitting there for so long. I spray my SAB down with it.

Walmart has decent spray bottles for like 3 bucks. Threads on iso bottles nicely.

Never saw a need for an expensive industrial one. I wouldn't mind one of those pump sprayers that some guys on here buy from Home depot. I don't really mist my monos though.

do you mean you think the spraybottle full of iso alc contaminated?

hmmm. ive not had that happen. i just pour my alc bottles into my spray bottle. then use the sprayer to sanitize things like a SAB or work surface/gloves/arms ect.

i do keep the spray bottle on a draft free shelf.

if your worried use bleach wipes on the sab surface and warm soapy water.

I mean the spray bottle I keep plain water in. Store bought spring water. I usually mist my SAB with it.

I normally do use soapy water as well the first time, then spray every few transfers. It very well may have been sloppy work, but I am not sure. I felt like I was relatively clean.

The kids helped me get some Kings spawned.

These are in some small turkey bags so they can watch them colonize.

And a mayo bucket half full that they filled together.

Another shot of the same bucket with a bonus skylander toy.

My bucket succumbed to trich.  Both my bags smell awful sweet and haven't colonized much in the last week or so.  I'm about to toss them.

I worked a bit with Phoenix Oysters last year.  I couldn't get them to fruit for shit but the myc was way more aggressive than King Oysters.  While the Kings did like the mulch, they didn't seem able to compete in an unpasteurized environment.  It's also been pretty warm here which I'm sure didn't help.

I have another bucket going on coir.  The Kings tore through it and are currently consolidating.  I'm going to case it here in a week or so and try to fruit it.

As for my mulch, I'm going to see if I can get ahold of a more aggressive oyster variety.  Try fruiting them this fall on my back porch.

Yeah, was the King Oysters.

I think the phoenix would love the mulch.

*edit*  Unfortunately I wrecked my phoenix culture.  Once I have some money I think I'm going to grab a four pack of edibles from sporeworks and give the mulch another try.

I squirted one single drop of a culture syringe of both phoenix and pearl oyster in master jars and transferred a bit to fresh agar just in case.  But up until I read  this post Id forgotten about the syringes.  Theyve been at RT upstairs and sometimes near 100F for extended periods (oops).  I will update results of this stress test in upcoming weeks.  Thanks for the reminder.

nice munch. how often are you watering? i bet keeping it in that closet keeps the rh a little higher than i had going on mine. i just put mine on the table. i would have to water 3 times daily at minimum. this also works with newspaper.

just a single mist spritz whenever I go in the room, so maybe twice a day? I also have a warm mist humidifier which helps a ton. I'm not gonna keep this setup going long, as I don't want to ruin my closet... so I might make a martha to do edibles in another room. I also need the oysters out of that space for whenever I am taking spore prints... Can't be takin prints with oysters pumpin out spores just 3' from them with just the SAB separating them...

but this was my first succesful endeavor into edibles, and its very encouraging! I went thru an entire bag of Scott's to get here. I put my LC on agar and am going to make up some new spawn this weekend. I also want to take a backpack full of oyster spawn to a couple local parks...

you could use some staples or tape to throw up some 5ml painters plastic and line the inside of the closet.

yeah that sounds great with the spawn at a local park. find some dead wood laying around. ive found some nice oysters on dead wood during leisurely walks in the woods.

for prints, i use a closed off storage shelf. that has doors that shut. in addition to the closed sterilites i use. so i am able to print side by side with the grow room. but, that is my setup. you may not have the space or equipment for that. but its definitely something worth investing in. even if its a small shelf that seals tight. this allows you to separate spaces.

yeah thats nice with the humidifier setup.

it might even be worth it to colonize a few bags of the mulch and toss the mulch around.

Don't waste your time doing that. The mulch isn't sterile so sterilizing the bag won't do anything. Sterility is not required for this tek.

yeah not really required for oysters either. you would probably melt the plastic bag. i wouldn't want to plague the inside of my pressure cooker with a melted plastic bag. it will end up burning later on and causing a bunch of problems.

I am SOOOO glad I stumbled upon this. I am just starting to get interested in oysters, and wasn't really sure of an easy way to fruit them. This seems perfect for me to learn about oyster. This is like noob introduction to oyster spawning/fruiting.

I literally just get some blue and king oyster agar. Gonna be giving this a go as son as I can make clean spawn. Excited.

no ziran,

i just mist when i walk by a few times daily. when you open up the holes around the pin clusters, the rest of the moisture of the substrate is kept inside the bag. if you open the bag too much you can have drying issues. this method is for a quick dinner a few times weekly. its not meant to be a method that gives you mass yield. just a quick and easy way to grow some oysters for fun and dinner.

you may find if you don't mist a few times daily your subs will dry out. a climate controlled environment is ideal but not everyone has that. this is intended for those who just need enough for themselves to eat. i suppose you could use some 5ml clear plastic and rig up an area somewhere to keep the rh in the room a little higher. maybe a coolmist in the room would help. but you can get away with growing oysters without a controlled environment. you have to have lots of fresh air exchange. much more than cubes. if you try them in tubs, its very difficult and the flushes are meh. you don't get enough air exchange and the substrates dry out.

the cool thing is, you can use newspaper, all kind of mulch or even dung or compost or straw. i love straw personally, but i hate prepping straw and working with it. nor do i have space to do so. and when it comes to cleaning straw...damn. also, its a pain to cut without good equipment. i also don't have space for equipment like that. weedeater and a garbage bin i guess. i don't even have space for a weedeater.

personally, i like using recycled newspaper because it recycles and its free. i mostly use it because i have it and try not to be wastedful. if i had room to store a bale of straw i would use straw but that is not the case. i just tried the soaked mulch and it worked the same way as newspaper. im pretty sure oysters will grow on anything.

there is an awesome thread at topia and its by a guy named fugubarn or something like that. the guy was near an old cotton farm. so he would use the recycled wasted plant material from the cotton mills and grow oysters like that. he built an autocleave the size of an 18 wheeler and has a giant grow area. i have a link in my journal if you want to see it. pretty insane oyster grow. probably the biggest and most amazing one i have ever seen. it puts things to shame.

keep scrolling through the thread and you will find the truck size autoclave.

I found some mulch labled "hardwood mulch" at my walmart that dosent appear to be dyed at all.
Would this be ideal?
Is working with it fresh out of the bag non pastrurized recommended or is there a degree of risk to it?

Not ideal but may work quite well! And yes I would pasteurize- so much nasties in a Walmart I'd definitely take that precaution.

Not "ideal" as in the best for oysters out of any standerd sub, i meant more of "ideal" for this tek, like if i was gonna use mulch it would be the best mulch to get.

As lon as it hasn't been super treated it should work fine. It's hard to tell with those things but if it's cheap I'd say its definitely worth a shot!

its in the OP. perhaps its time to give it a 2nd reading.

Quote:

You can use this mulch right out of the bag.  Generally it has perfect moisture content when bought in the store.  In this write up the bag used was several years old so it had to be rehydrated.

pasteurization is not called for in this tek. ive done this tek multiple times and never pasteurized anything, and its never failed. oyster myc is powerful stuff.

Awesome, thanks for the input

Yeah i saw that it said it wasnt pasturized, but also the tek is two years old, so i was just wondering if opinions had changed since then.

I've heard recently people have had issues with cedar mulch. Also I've seen some mulch that has pine straw and it didn't seem to colonize. I use this same method with newspaper and it requires no pasteurization. Some mulch comes hydrated in the bag.  But you want to soak it in warm water in order to get the mulch to proper moisture content.

Most people have issues with oysters when it comes to fruiting. They need high fae when in doubt cut a small hole in the bag if your not getting pins.

Awesome, thanks for the tips Eat.

Earlier in the thread i saw you say something about being at about 50% humidity. Was that indoor or outdoor humidity?

You grew these in open air right?

If my humidity is about 30% where i would be growing them do you think they would still be fine if i mist the fruits often?

Indoor RH is between 45-50% in my house. I then mist the fruits anytime I walk by. Minimum 3 times a day. I drench the fruits dripping wet.

Yes open air. You can stack them in close proximity. That may help. I might even rig a 5ml plastic tarp near the bags and maybe mist that as well. You could automate but that is not the intention of this method. This is for super simple fruiting. The difficult part is keeping the balance of RH and fae for oysters. You want the moisture content in the sub block to be maintained. If your fruits are drying. Your losing moisture or aren't misting enough.

Also with the open air environment dont be afraid to heavily mist the fruits directly. they aren't as sensitive to wetspot like cubes are.

did another run. here is the first harvest. started it indoors, but they were lookin a bit lanky so i moved em outdoors so they would get a bit more fae. hopefully the rest will have less stem. the bags were made from just water soaked scotts mulch, no past. or sterilization. spawn was wbs nocced up with vendor LC.

Are you able to dunk or heavily hydrate the surface? they should trigger to heavy rain, and ample hydration.

I could dunk it in another 5gal bucket, using some weight to keep the block in the original bucket.
I've been spraying the hell out of the holes daily. Probably needs a good dunk.

How long would you suggest to dunk it? An hour? 20 mins?

More like hours, try 8-12 hours of heavy rain effect. There is also pH triggered heavy hydration, but I have only tested that 4 times.

nice grow munch. did you have to mist more when you put them outside? are they in a shady spot?

are you keeping them in that mono so that you can mist it and keep a little extra micro climate?

i think thats a great idea.

I'm going to do this with the bag of cocoa shell mulch I have. My local vendor set me back real bad when they sent me Asperger in my spawn so I don't have time to do this outside before I move. Should I pasteurize cocoa shell mulch? I figure I could just stick it in a bucket and hydrate with boiling water and use it when it cools.

UPDATE: Spellcheck for the weirdness. Aspergillus.

i didnt change the misting, just did it once or twice a day. the wall is facing north, so it never gets direct light. the mono doesn't have any poly in the holes, so it gets decent fae especially with a breeze outside. the mono helps keep the humidity at a decent level. i tried doing these open air, but they would pin then dry out even with misting.

WOW! I wish you could cut holes and set them all free withouf affecting the integrity of the rest of the oysters. There are so many cute little pins and they all look like they just wan't to burst free. Hopefully that's what my cube tubs will look like. I am finally getting that replacement for my oyster spawn that was infected with aspergillus tomorrow so I want to try this.

I like to use my scalpel- poke just the tip in and tweak the blade to pull the bag outward without cutting it, then slowly twist the blade and push out along where the bag gives you resistance. But one thing to note- oysters are quite prone to over pin- causing many aborts and sapping energy away from the fruits with the highest success rate for reproduction. This is one of the reasons only a few holes are cut in bags- to ensure plump and well formed fruits as well as mostly negate lost energy.

i generally flood my bags like a dunk for an hour then put em back into fruiting. the only issue is the holes in the bag. so i just submerge the block itself underwater with something heavy to secure it.

This is tight eat.  I am going to do this soon but probably with pasteurized wheat straw, and hang the bags from a rack in an environmentally controlled closet..  What kind of mulch do you use for these grows?

oh can't wait!

id love to use wheat straw. but us city(pronounced shitty as in shitty wok) folk don't have space for a bale of straw.

scotts mulch. from lowes i think is where i got it.

there are likely organic mulches out there that work. just check your local availability. the info on the bag is inconclusive.

it does have a plant based dye in it that is allowed for human consumption. psilo checked into it on the first few pages.

anyway, im not dead yet from eating oysters off of it.

After some trial and error I ended up moving blocks outside and fruiting in open air (temps were optimal for this).

I plan to work out my indoor issues and see if I can get better results in the future, but for now the blocks are doing great outside

Can I eat the fluffy white foamy bits on the top of the oyster spawn bag that they sent me if they don't have sawdust inside. They look like little poofy yummy white marshmallows.

I've eaten oyster mycelia. It smells like almonds to me. I love the smell. I'd probably leave it alone though lol

I think they are aborted oysters or something. They are different then the mycelia and they aren't rotten. Just malformed. It's the size of my palm.

It may be similar to blobs in cubes. Like mushroom matter that never formed into a defineable fruit body.

Did you introduce that block into fruiting?

I don't think I want to deal with trying to sterilize this cocoa mulch. I'm thinking 5 gallon bucket and some boiling water at this point. Just pasteurize. Good idea? bad idea?

oh, nah just warm water soak. submerge it under water for an hour. sometimes the bags come fully hydrated. i have used it directly out of the bag when i first bought the bag. but after a year i would soak and rehydrate.

Good to know. Someone told me I couldn't use bucket tek and it only worked on coir because of the pressure causing heat as the blocks were being pressed. But I assumed the heat from roasting the cocoa beans is pretty substantial as well. I just poured a pot of boiling water in a bucked and made sure to stir it real good and left it for an hour. Then I dug bot my hands in and made sure to get all the heavily saturated mulch mixed in with the upper mulch let it cool and then stuffed my bags. I decided to use the grow bags I had instead.

Scott mulch concerns me. They use petrochemicals to color that stuff. Someone needs to leach a bunch of it and watch the crap that comes out of it to see if it's really safe. The ever descriptive man made additives and polymers is a slick way of saying petrochemicals. Also mulch can come from anywhere. There are no strict guidelines against pesticides. They can grind up old buildings and houses into mulch full of nasty shit. I'm a horrible person and I'm raining on your parade I know. Scott isn't going to tell you that.

EDIT: Just found this so it's somewhat better. "Earthgro® by Scotts® never uses construction debris or pallet wood that may contain nails or harmful chemicals. Only natural recovered forest products are used"

Do you have that MSDA for my to analyze? I don't want my mushy friends getting sick from prolonged exposure. Mushrooms are really good at absorbing chemicals especially petrochemicals. That's how they perform soil remediation.

You have to understand there are some really toxic things in womens makeup that shouldn't be on anyones face. There is even formaldehyde as one example in it. I rarely wear makeup and when I do it's stuff like bare minerals.

Nice dude!
I'm going to try some colonized grain and sawdust mixed and left to colonize in smaller containers and run them as cakes in a mini sgfc I made. Having 0 luck with the ole bucket.
You gave me the idea by running bags in a tub!

And blackcat, if you're worried about mulch, you can always buy hardwood fuel pellets and prep them the same way as coir. Just requires different measurements, but can be prepped in a bucket as well.

Ahhh. Yeah I was thinking of fuel pellets next if my cocoa mulch doesn't go as planned. The place near me has a shit ton for sale and they guys cool and will hook me up. Sometime being a girl has it's perks.

I'm a little concerned about the use of cocoa bean shells because in tropical environments they have to use pesticides or things will be destroyed by bugs. There is also less legislation in some countries. If it works out I'll have to find a company and find out where they are sourcing their cocoa shells from. Mushrooms can in their own rights detoxify your body so the pesticides may not matter but I can't be sure the beans are rinsed before roasting and the shells are quite absorbant.

Darnit.  The spot where I was going to attempt a proper oyster grow employing this method has fallen through due to a broken foot.  If I am going to begin to take my mushrooms to market I am going to need to set up a proper growing room for these mushrooms.  I'll figure something out.  Maybe it's time to get a ready built storage unit form Lowes for a couple hundred dollars, slap it in the back yard, and fashion it into a mini green house for oysters, and such.

Hi, thanks for the link, kittycat, but if I am going to spend 600 dollars on a structure I am building it my self, and designing it to my own, personal specs.  Oysters produce a lot in a small area too, so I won't need a space that big immediately.  It's easier to control the environment of a small space as apposed to a larger space, also.

Best idea to build it yourself! I'm sure for 600 bucks you could build a pretty big space.

Do you guys think lions mane would fare well with this method? Maybe if I substituted mulch for saw dust or something? I have several jars colonizing but I haven't decided what to do with them yet. This tek revived my hope for growing edibles after my decent oyster turn out.

here are the revived 2007 cultures. spawned to wood mulch today. smelled like almonds.had to bring these back with pf jars. they wouldn't germinate on agar plates.

I have a pile of shit from the power line tree trimmers. It has been sitting there since last summer. Would it be safe to try it with that?

It was a mix of trees and mulched, very little pine in it, lots of leaves that have broken/composted down. I just don't know how it would work using straight from outside. I would probably keep it away from other grows to be safe.

So what's the average yield everyone is getting per bag?

Pasteurized it. Should be fine.

behold. 2-3 year old mulch. just soaked it. then spawned some 11 year old blue oyster and pearl oyster cultures. i took some transfers to agar so i have a backup now. which im thinking of blending up in some LI and then sucking it into a syringe to see if i can get another 11 years out of it.

doubtful

im actually trying it this time in monos. just how munch ddid it in the thread earlier.

damn gourmet. i haven't actually recorded any of the yield yet. i just grill it up and eat it.

id say at least 2lbs off each. its a low spawn ratio for me. 1.5 quarts per bag maybe when it averages out. i only fill them about halfway.

also guys and gals, if you have any larger wood pieces in your mulch like actual tree stumps ect. throw those out. i found this new bag of mulch i got had some actual branches in it. but most of it was mulch.

This is dope because I just spotted a truck with mulch in it driving down the road the other day. It had a sign on it that said "Free mulch". The yard is about a 10min drive from my house :stoned:

i made some chinese food with my oysters tonight. beef and mushrooms. they were fucking delicious. although, i tried putting em in monos again but there wasn't enough air exchange. even with the holes open and lid angled. first batch came out long stemmed.

11 year old oyster cultures. grown off mulch in plastic bags. open air. just sprayed em a few times daily. i must have harvested about 3lbs fresh today. i should be harvesting about 3 more times that in the next few days. mmmm. and the mother in law is cooking them up. i need to make my shroom tacos.
