Possibly my favourite Opuntia species. Pity its massive size...

A O. humifusa I've had for a year or two:

Some O. fragilis "v. denudata" that I ordered recently:

Both of those species are apparently cold hardy in my area of Canada but I've kept the O. humifusa inside under the lights over the winter so far. I'm hoping to use the O.fragilis as a graft stock.

You can spot also variegated O.monacantha in the same pot, but i already posted that in here.
Oh by the way, not opuntias (one is also not a variegation) But i just wanted to toss them here because i'm lazy (And they are in the same pot)

Hylocalycium-chimera.. LOL ..

Nice.. Both those varieties are pretty prolific (Gymno and Hylo)..LOL that's super awesome to see it doing well, Lem. Did you develop that Chimera yourself? Regardless, that is one special little plant.

Nope, i bought it. Creating a chimera is an extremely rare happening , Wich happens in grafts . In this case , hylo /gymnocalycium hibotan are the most common commercial graft, hence, it just happened. Plus this one has a pretty solid rooted section, Wich has less gymno tissue , so it's kinda sturdy , so propagation is fairly easy.
Oh by the way, wanted to share a pad of art. Spartan carving of opuntia on opuntia ficus indica pad. Don't get me wrong, damaging cactus is not my intent, and i woudn't do that on things that are outside my propriety. this pad was a trimmed pad that just rooted while layng on the ground. plus it's opuntia, wich is way more than abundant here, and it's so sturdy that can't possibly die.

This scientific journal says that a certain Opuntia has 0.9% goodness within. The preview has the results.

In the wild, cold hardy species of Opuntia will dehydrate and shrivel up to be able to survive long periods of freezing temperatures during the winter. The temperature where I live falls below zero on a regular basis, but come summer they thrive and have abundant flowers. Pretty sure the most prominent species in my area is O. phaeacantha. I gave my neighbor a tiny yearling with an intact root system that I dug up while on a hike, it has been growing steadily in her windowsill for the past year without as much dehydration as would be seen in exposure to extreme temperature.

It took me a long time to write this poetry, and I couldn't ever done in another lenguage than Sicilian. the Idea came to my mind the same moment i snapped this photo. My town (should i say village?) is pretty old and rustic. there are plenty of abandoned places and some intresting glimpses. like this. Since Opuntia ficus Indica grows so well in sicily, it's not uncommon to se it growing on the roofs. Just a bird leaving some seeds, a bit of dirt, sun , occasional rains, that's it. translated it loses a lot of it's original content, but i will try do the best ( since i can't really do a translation)
Once upon a time, inside a courtyard there was a wide ancient claypot had a bit of soil inside it's belly but never had a plant inside it's heart layng on the balcony the pot was put there by old lady Titina but in the years, not even the worst opuntia ever laid roots onto his dirt
One beautiful day, enlightned of sun inbetween the shingles appeared from the old roof on green pad of Ficus indica the pot and the pad looked in each other's eyes during the most respectuful silence then the pot took courage and turned the word to the pad
"what are you doing up there, come down here" said the pot, in angry tone "I am alone, and i make the mold you instead, are enjoyng your life" "why should i come down there?" said easily the opuntia pad you can't even imagine the view i won't come down, not even if dead
So the opuntia stood there cause she doesen't want to be imprisoned free in the air, alongside the birds she dominates the roofs, unopposed And she doesent look down there because she's ostile to the clapot she just holds an eye to the city cause she's the queen of the gutters
Yep. it sounds terrible, but i tries to keep the same meaning of the original one. i assure you that the sicilian version sounds really good. pheraps someone want's to make corrections of the english version?
