Ok, that is not Opuntia Cow tongue, as far as i know that name refers to Opuntia engelmannii var. linguiformis
That is Opuntia Monacantha Monstrose (variegated) called also Opuntia Maverick (if monstrose ) or Opuntia Joseph's coat if normal (dunno why exactly)
I do actually own that, and i also own a pad that is somehow reverted to less monstrose form

Of course the monstrose form does grow kinda messy, i'd try to root the branches, or even make some cuttings (i don't know exactly, but opuntias are usually easy to root, still this one probably is more delicate). A nice bush sure looks better than a slender plant Imo

I'm partial to Opuntia. I like plants that like me and i find these easy to grow. They are savage beasts though.
Mostly_Harmless sent me a few which are doing ok i think.
I don't know them by species.

I assume this is some kind of mutant ? I forget what he called it but it seems to be doing well.

My only south facing window (except a frosted downstairs toilet).

These next 2 i've had a while. One got too big for indoors but the tender young pads are loved by snails so i'm trying to protect them. I cut off all last years growth due to snail damage. It started growing really early this year for some reason, pads don't usually appear until July.
2009,

2015,

This one's a nice colour, looks benign but you don't want to touch this thing.

One of the pads started degrading and oozing sap over winter, i'm not sure what was wrong with it.

Here's a Fittonia and Streptocarpus, my favorite flowers. They don't belong here but they look nice,, .

Thanks for watching !

They might need to reach a certain size before being 'mature' enough to flower? The one above was my first flower of any Opuntioideae. Be sure they are getting enough phosphorous as that helps a plant to maturity and a lack of that will delay maturity, but not too much or it locks out other nutrients (zinc, iron).

I've fed it a couple of times with multi purpose miracle grow and i water them frequently through Summer when they are growing. It's put on 4 new pads this year, it started very early for some reason. It dosen't usually start until July and i look after it to encourage them. It's too big for indoors now really. I should be able to find it a winter spot. I Should break that ceramic pot and treat it to a nice big one. I might have something lying around that will do the job. It's a nice day to be messing around with plants,, .
Have a good day !

Somehow, this post is something that i should have wrote at least one year ago.
I had a pot full of Opuntia. Not a beatiful one. a mess of tubular trunks with hundreds of tiny etiolated pads. But from a trunk there was some different kind of growht. Same exemplar. but from a different areole, there were 3 beautiful pads, with huge spines. The exact day i wanted to snap a pic and let you see, my mother decided to cut it down and trash it, because she said that she kept touching it during waterings and it was pretty dangerous.
With my joy, i saw new offshots from the exact same place and they were lookalikes of the removed pads. They were soooo slow.
So 3 months ago i took the whole pot, i did a lot of trimming, til it became just a mess of brown corked stumps. Now it's full with growing pales. And you can finally see the pad i wanted to show you.
Regular Growht.

The infamous Pad.

As you can see there's a big difference. The infamous pad has different spination, skin, has irregular border,it's curved ,bigger and it totally kiks ass.
I do suspect it's some sort of mutation/monstrosity, because it totally belongs to the same trunk of other regular pads.
oh by the way, the name of this Opuntia? What do you think about it?

I do have it. Had big troubles finding it, because only usa sellers had it. So when I found that on ebay, coming from England, I immediately bought it. It's slower than regular opuntia to root.

That is Opuntia Cochenillifera Variegata. Not sunburst. I really need to get my hands on that.

Yeah, i do reason in the same way. If theres a smaller specimen of those fast growing ones, i usually pick those instead of bigger exemplars (Unless bigger ones have a really good price) I do have time t grow things. i mean, hoping i die old.
