psi said: Subscribed. Mine are not impressive to look at but maybe I can take some pics tomorrow. One is a cold hardy one native to Ontario, O. humifusa I think. Kept it inside this winter and unbeknownst to me it was developing this infestation of some kind of white sticky insect life on the underside of the main pad. Should have just left it outside I guess.
I'm interested to get some spineless O. fragilis and get an outdoor patch going for grafting stock. I wonder if it might confer some cold hardiness benefit to peyote compared to own-root plants.
Damn that's a good question there psi. I want an answer to this as well. I got a good cold hardy opuntia although it's covered in glochids "duct tape will take care of that though" that I've thought about grafting to. would I be able to leave a trich or loph outside grafted to this opuntia throughout winter?

Lophs can survive below freezing temps in a greenhouse at least, kept frost free. Worth some experimenting for sure! I keep a few seedlings in an in-ground bed inside my greenhouse, shared with trichs, echinocereus and many others, and they have survived the last few years.

So would an in ground bed work, except not in a greenhouse but instead just threw like a little DIY cold frame over em in the winter?
I'm going to get myself a some optuna cuttings today so I should be able to get some pics up tonight and maybe you guys can help me ID it.

See,I didn't even know they were separate species
Who knows man?
All I know is that out of the different types I have,I was only able to ID them because two are Florida natives, and the other is a Kentucky native.
Opuntia pusilla is my tiny native one from Florida.
Opuntia humifusa is the one native to Kentucky.
And opuntia stricta is the on Lsoares identified for me,which is also a florida native.
It makes it harder when you just get them from random people and don't know their origin.
Plus they hybridize with other types making it darn near impossible.

I found a bunch of opuntia paddles behind the mall while out taking my sister shopping and took a bag home with me and will be back for the rest tomorow - that's if they're still there.
In zone 8a I'm planting in the grassy ground an opuntia ficus indica as an expirment to see if it survives the freezing winter.
I'm also growing 2 different purple varieties -one I beleive is a Santa Rita but I'm insure of the other which is more of a dense paddle with little glochids and no long spines.
The opuntia microdaisy was always my favorite pain in the hands , the crested ones are worth the cold water and tape.

I think you will be fine, their hardiness is 8b upward, and during the coldest months,I would just cover it with something to make sure.
