Wow that was a good bit to take in and i really appreciate the thorough and detailed response.
Even going off of that though, it still sounds like these subulata can exhibit or even only carry montrose traits without any signs of crestimg. Would the reverse be true in saying that all crests are montrose, even if they arent a global mutation?
I will have to go back and give another read thru, maybe im still off base on that.
On which page is the TPM × Sharxx u mention?? I have only one that survived and was grafted and hasnt shown signs of either.
Also have a tray of seed grown Psycho0 × TPM that show crested/montrose throughout the entire plant. Relatively slower growing but they are some of my favorites only because theyre the only crested plants we have.

Hey has anybody heard of the Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. monstrose and the phytoplasma it's usually supposed to contain? Can you tell me anything about it?

I've never seen these spines on the plants that grow wild here.

Finally got around to sowing those Opuntia seeds I harvested. Question: do you sow them like normal cacti seeds or do you need to cover the seeds with a light layer of soil? They are alot bigger than tricho seeds. I just sowed them like normal and lightly pressed the seeds into the soil a bit but they are still pretty much on the top later of coir/perlite.
These are Purple fruits with huge pads that tend to grow more upright than the others I have. The others started out upright but now that they have experienced some wind and cold it looks like they have laid down more then they already were. They are also way smaller pads. I was told they grow along the ground when I was traded them so it was expected. I really wish I had kept up with the species names though.
Zeronowhere Yours have rooted but I'm waiting till spring to add them to the bed.

Good deal man! That's probably a good plan. I brought mine inside cause I dont know how well they will do in a pot over winter.

FYI. You surface sow like Trichocereus/Lophophora/Ariocarpus/etc....

I wonder... I'll root a pad this summer and pot it and will see what happens. I bet it will be fine. I had some squirrels completly eat the above ground part of the pad and it just pupped and started over like a badass. The squirrels....Not so lucky. Next year I also wanna try a pad or two as stone eaters. Always thought that was pretty neat and I finally found some good rocks. I can say I have killed one though.
Rip. It got too hott in my greenhouse and the sunburn was too bad I couldnt save it. It was my first prickly pear.
Thanks Karode! Hopefully they do well. Like I said I just lightly pushed them against the soil. I feel like I really should have washed the fruit juices off the seeds before I planted though. They were a chore to sow.

Anybody know what this Opuntia species is? I got it from a public place in Nebraska. I'm assuming since they planted it here its hardy enough to withstand our winters (-30F at times)?
Thanks in advance!

OwO didn't know about this thread, here is my prickly pear patch. Also got bunny ears, Opuntia Monacantha Jacob's Coat, and Opuntia Quimillo growing in there somewhere.

Nice! Flowers on the way? Do they live outside all year round? I put mine away in a greenhouse for winter.
