There was a stand of opuntia at the local farmers market today. Some fragilis, subulata and a couple others. I picked up this little guy for $7. Too much I know but oh well, didn't have one like this yet.

And an update on my little Opuntia humifusa experiment above, all of the surface sown seeds developed mold right across the board. I had around a total of 5 sprouts come up but most ended up shriveling up, falling over or otherwise failing. This is the lone survivor. I realize that germination is stagerred and more sprouts may come if I were to leave it be but I decided to get this little guy out of the contamination chamber that became my seed tray and cut my losses.

Overall it seems the best seed depth is ~1cm with the most sucess coming from leaving the seeds in the natural goo of the fruit they came in.
Is that Opuntia robusta you picked up? Its lovely.
Seed experiments are awesome. I guess its how to propgate them really. A buddy i used to work with said that when he lived in mexico out on the desert him and his cousins would eat Opuntia fruits all the time. The only thing it works like a laxative of sorts. So they were very poor harvesting oregano they would go and poop in the desert. He said that many months would go by and they wpuld return to the spots where they would go to the bathroom only to find a bunch of opuntia plants in place. He said this of many spots where they went. Considering this if you can stomach it i guess eat them. i should have done this with my tephrocactus seeds and then go poop outside. Aint that something. I just dried them out cause none germinated and im gonna try next year.

Going to hopefully be receiving a pad from the northern most known patch of Opuntia Oricola from my buddy. He was able to collect it because he works at the local Uni. Its found on land owned by oil companies on a natural gas storage facility. Stoked to have my first Opuntia, and its endemic to my region.

Thank you I like it. Not site what it is and the vendor was clueless to the point of making me look like an expert
Poop propagation sounds funny but really it makes sense. I have 2 fruits left in the freezer but I'm not sure I want a tray of feces in my living room

Just found this thread All hail the most DELICIOUS yet annoying to harvest of cacti, the prickly pear!!
I have three opuntia varieties, a yellow, red, and creme variety
Yello, only has these itchy little glochids, not too bad to harvest, but still annoying, started from a plate from my grandmothers garden, i have probably 2 dozen of these plants from clone, but this was the easiest to get a pic of, is about twice this size as of right now

My Red one, has both itchy glochids AND large spines, is quite painful to retrieve fruit, only have one, but its pretty, i about twice this size now, havn't taken new pics

And my FAVPORITE OPUNTIA OF ALL TIME, a long spined Creamflowered variety. i need an exact species ID, cant figure it out, Haven't seen it anywhere else but my Gandmother's place. has creme colored flowers and fruit, and is by far the best tasting of the three in terms of fruit. has NO itchy glochids, but tons of painful echinopsis style spines from the areoles. Also came from a plate in my grandmothers garden, this is my only one of this plant, just started growing it myself this year, the new growth plate at the moment is bigger than the rooted pad, just havn't taken new pics.

As much hate as they get thanks to how common they are and the glochids, opuntia make one of the tastiest fruits in the plant kingdom, may not be as big as dragon fruit but i think the taste is unequalled, accept maybe by a fresh kiwi or something lol

Yea the last one isn't itchy, it just stabs you a bit, only rarely does it draw blood though
and guess im lucky, never noticed a laxative effect of the fruits ive had, bt ive never sat down to a whole meal of them or anything. most the seeds are rotting in a septic tank somewhere in Michigan, too many dogs around here to go poop in a hole or something or id give it a go xD.

Yeehaw that's great! Love the photo bombers in the background too and is that cilantro in with your opuntia?
Here is one of many natural patches of O. fragilis I came across on a job site this week. Only about 25 feet from the edge of the lake.

That's a lovely plant there. Supposedly great grafting stock too.

I got some spineless O. fragilis at the end of last summer in the hopes of growing grafting stock outside that I don't have to find space for inside over the winter. They have some glochids but it's nothing too bad. Planted them in the ground this spring and they are really taking off, the new pups are growing quite rapidly. Don't know where the charging cable is for my camera but I posted some pics in this thread when I first got them.

Oh neat! I hadn't considered it as grafting stock.
Edit for the sake of not double posting. Saw this beauty next door to where I was working today. Sp?

I was going to ask if that G. carbonara (it's what it is, isn't it?) is yours.
