There was a big(gish) in 1969. I was 4 or 5 but I remember it all too well, scared the bejesus out of me (it was in the middle of the night). Scientists are still discussing if it was the one of the 200 year cycle or a different story and the big one is still to come.

We had an earth quake in Oklahoma due to all the fracking being done by oil companies. It was small but it recorded. Fracking is the reason for many around here.

Across the street from where I was working today I spotted this beautiful little number.

Opuntia fragilis I suspect as that is our only native species in my area. I had never tasted it before so I tried one of the fruits; delightful, but the glochids in my lip were pretty unpleasant. I took a couple of fruits with my to try to propagate from seed. If anyone has done this before (and I'm sure some of you have!) What's the best way to go about this?

Bonus: this other one was on the steps next to the first

I think the one with fruits is Opuntia humifusa. Nice plants.

Cool thanks Zed! Im trying to learn online now about starting opuntia from fresh seeds but theres lots of conflicting information. Some people say soak seeds, some say dry them, or sandpaper them or even ferment them!

Try a mix of methods? Some aren't too bad and will sprout fairly quickly. Years later, others from the same batch might come up. Stratification can help. Paper towel method. Sowing a pot and leaving outside for a range of temperate swings and moisture levels. Soaking/drying multiple times to break down the outer.

Started an experiment with those opuntia seeds. Last night I cut open 4 fruits for the seeds (and gobbled up the tasty package they came in.)
The seeds from one I left in their natural state and did nothing to them (goo.)
The next I chewed up gently and then spit out (chew.)
The third were rinsed off (rinse.)
And the seeds from the last pod were put in a bowl of water (soak.)

I left them all for as close to 24hrs as I had patience for and then planted them in my cactus seed medium, with varying soil depth from surface sown to pushed right in. Got it nice and wet and covered it up. Not an exciting picture yet but I will keep you all posted as it progresses.

hahaha, I think he means chewed the fruit, to release the seeds. That's probably why he said "chewed gently" as to not break the seeds.

Clean them well of any remnant of the fruit until they resemble a shriveled lentil, then sow. I've tried only once, with a Maihueniopsis, and germination was good but I'm sure it was luck. From what I've read, germination is sort of staggered across many seasons, certainly an evolutionary adaptation to counter the effects of bad seasons.

Maybe try cold stratification: sow normally, place in fridge for a couple of weeks and proceed normally after that.

Or you can give up and grow from cuttings.

Thanks for the tips buddy,
I have actual plants, but I found a huge patch of wild plants that had the most deliciously succulet, and quite large fruit:yesnod:
I took quite a few fruits from those plants, and ate them.
I saved the seeds, and as of yet, can't get them to germinate.
I've also tried on earlier occasions, with other types too,and had no success.
It's still pretty cool here, maybe I'll sow them outdoors, and keep them moist.
I'll try a few in the fridge too:thumbup:

You read correctly, ate the fruit whole and chewed up the seeds. Reading online some guys suggested taking sandpaper to the seeds, others said to ferment them. I figured chew them gently, not enough to crack just enough to rough up the outside, plus get some of those digestive enzymes working on them, not really fermenting but it's affecting the chemical structure somehow I'm sure. And hell why not? I've now planted probably around 100 seeds for it and I have 2 fruits left!

I just can't stop.

There was a stand of opuntia at the local farmers market today. Some fragilis, subulata and a couple others. I picked up this little guy for $7. Too much I know but oh well, didn't have one like this yet.

And an update on my little Opuntia humifusa experiment above, all of the surface sown seeds developed mold right across the board. I had around a total of 5 sprouts come up but most ended up shriveling up, falling over or otherwise failing. This is the lone survivor. I realize that germination is stagerred and more sprouts may come if I were to leave it be but I decided to get this little guy out of the contamination chamber that became my seed tray and cut my losses.

Overall it seems the best seed depth is ~1cm with the most sucess coming from leaving the seeds in the natural goo of the fruit they came in.
