Microscopes
    #2173988 - 12/13/03 02:26 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I'm looking for a 1000x oil immersion scope, I'm looking to spend $200-$400. I would also love the capability of taking digital pictures or hooking it up to the PC.

I'd use the search function if it was enabled, as I'm sure this has been asked before.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I put this in advanced, because I know more pros browse here.

Thansk in advance

Yes I looked there, I found a couple 1000x scopes but frankly I dont know what I'm buying. I mostly want if for mushroom identification, but I also want it to be powerful enough that I wont "outgrow" it.

What are some trustworthy brand names?

I found  this one. Seems like a good price..  :smirk:

i don't know many names of quality microscope makers. if there is a university near you, maybe they would have some names to give you. i think i found the best microscopes on ebay doing a search with "1400x microscope". if you think you'll outgrow one of those, you better start saving up for an s.e.m. right now.

Check Edmund Scientific at scientificsonline.com. They have a great variety of scopes, digital and otherwise. Several models seem to fit your needs, and they are a very reputable company...

This is a nice page for microscopes and accessories:
http://www.brunelmicroscopes.co.uk/

They also heave cheap adapters for microphotography.

I use various 'scopes...
I'm especially fond of Nikon, but there are lots of excellent ones out there. I'd definitely save up for the best you can afford. And a good zoom stereoscope (3D binocular microscope) will give you hours of entertainment - starting off at low power already reveals unexpected levels of detail, and then you can slowly zoom in, say onto a mushroom gill, eventually resolving individual tetrads of spores, which you can watch as they pop off into space. (you couldn't easily do that with an objective micro as your specimen would already be squashed). The 3D aspect is really amazing - you can spend hours looking at tiny insects or a few drops of pond water - akin to travelling around an alien universe.

But, admittedly, for purely practical purposes, an objective with oil immersion is going to be more useful to you... My friend turned up with a tiny (digicam-sized), collapsible, portable 1000x micro of excellent quality recently, I will try to track down a brand name for you...

I've had my eye on both of these. I like the trinocular option, though I've heard that most often a camera held up to the eyepiece works fine.

For oil immersion you only need the lenses for it -- they unscrew off the diaphram. They can't be that expensive. I don't think they're called lenses, though -- pm me and I can ask a microscopist -- they'll know where to get them.

If you've got a decent microscope you just need to buy 1 part.

Cynmar.com has a great selection of microscopes and digital imagery accessories.

For about double what you want to pay, they even have a microscope with a built in camera and measuring software. It takes the measurements for you.

They have plenty in your price range, and check there clearance section because they let really nice scopes go at half price alot.

Get something binocular for sure, or trinocular for hooking up cameras. AVOID monocular scopes like the plague. It is very hard on the eyes.

occular lenses are the eyepieces and objective lenses are the ones at the stage end. you need to know the threading on the objective most are a standard but there are many that are oddballs
objsctive lenses can run quite gigh depending on quality cheap 100x spring loaded objectives are around $60 and for a good one expect about $300
