Vegetarian Animals
    #2173546 - 12/12/03 06:54 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

I'm a 21 year old healthy vegetarian of about 8 years. I've read book about people who alter thier pets diet to vegetarian, or vegan. Dogs and cats specifically. My friend has a vegetarian doberman. His health has improved significantly, his coat is shinier and he's got lots more energy.

My cat is 9 months old and he loves to eat bread and I give little bits and pieces of non-meaty foods that he seems to like. I was wondering if any of you guys have any experience with vegetarian animals, or any thoughts on giving our little animal companions vegetarian diets?

Funny you should mention that Bom.

I have a bunny that I feed bits of mice to after my cat gets done killing and torturing them. His (the bunny's coat) is shinier than ever too. But that's probably because it's a new mouse coat.

I found it at a thrift store for only a dollar.

Dogs can survive on pure vegetarian diets longer than cats can, but neither creature will thrive. Cats especially can get very sick very quickly (like with little or no warning) without meat. Their diet is so specialized that it isn't even possible to keep them healthy on dog food alone for very long.

Dogs are quite a bit more tolerant, but it's still a bad idea. Maybe one day some pet food manufacturer will come up with some totally synthetic type engineered dry food made from soy beans and vitamins and synthesized amino acids missing from soy protein, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

It's just the way they're built ... has nothing to do with their spirituality or their philosophy.

Here's how I feel about the issue.

To make such a drastic switch in your pet's diet would be unhealthy. I think that we should feed our carnivorous friends a diet of mostly meat, and introduce some vegetables into their diet at some point, but never exceeding a certain percentage of about 10% veggies.

Evolution is a gradual process, and I believe that humans are designed to evolve into vegetarian diets, just as animals likely would be. Meat is necssary for early evolutionary development, and once a certain point of our evolution has been reached, meat becomes less of a necessity and more a food of desperation... a survival food if nothing else is available to sustain the body.

But as for carnivores, only a small amount of vegetables should be incorporated into their diet, and perhaps if these partially vegetarian animals produce offspring, a slightly higher percentage of vegetables may be fed to the succeeding generations.

I don't really know for sure if it would work, just a theory, feel free to tell me how wrong I am!

My dog is so keen on raspberries that he wanders into raspberry thickets and eats any berries in reach. Mind you, those are sweet, so that might explain that. My old dog used to love cherry tomatoes.

I think it's fine to feed a dog or cat veggies if they like 'em, but don't try to base their entire diet off of it. They need some stuff that only meat can provide, at least for the time being.

Don't worry, I'm wrong.

Become vegetarian or vegan yourself is fine. That's your choice. But forcing an animal who is naturally carnivorous or omnivorous to do so constitutes animal abuse, IMO.

Ummm... did my not so subtle hint go completely unnoticed?

An interesting topic, but perhaps one of the mods might prefer to move it to The Pub?

Don't be so ignorant there, bud.

Actually, what any being eats is directly related to spirituality, in fact it IS spirituality.

Anything positive growth or understanding of any temple of life (universe, your house, your body, etc).

To me, the food you place in your temple , or shell is VERY spiritual.

My cat is great. She hunts the birds and mice that visit my area. She leaves me presents. What was the question? Oh, and btw, does anyone have any suggestions as to the carcasses???

So then this is the forum where I should be discussing what agar recipe I should be using to sector my mycelium on?

I love pets. I have a cat myself. It just strikes me as odd that you would consider this the correct forum to discuss pet nutrition. Especially when Bom herself was explaining it strictly from a viewpoint of the the animals physical health -- "My friend has a vegetarian doberman. His health has improved significantly, his coat is shinier and he's got lots more energy."

My impression wasn't that Bom was asking for spiritual or philosophical advice for her pets.

This is just plain stupid. Humans are omnivores and can tolerate somewhat of a vegetarian diet. Like someone mentioned... you choose to be a vegetarian that's your choice. If your dog or cat had a choice, they would eat nothing but red bloody meat... as much as they could get their teeth on. Their bodies are designed for high protein and fat intake, not intake of non digestable cellulose. Trying to convert your carnivorous pet into a herbivore is very unhealthly for the animal.
