My mantises hatched! 7

check it out. arent they adorable?
i let most of them out, there were about 200, kept about 40. mainly because it started raining, and they didnt want to leave yet
gonna let more out tomorrow, depending on how many are still there alive in the morning
eventually, there will only be one worthy of the terrarium.

I totally meant to buy a couple mantis eggs for the spring/ summer but completely forgot

That is a nice lil terrarium you have set up though.

set one aside in a small tupperware bin, with some leaves, twigs, and a little ground beef and wet cat food. it can eat whichever its little heart desires, till its big enough for ants, flies and moths
its name is moonshoe.

they do. you give it to them by running a cotton string through it, and they eat the little chunks
they cant survive on it forever though, after 1 or 2 molts, they need to have chitin in their diet, which beef doesnt have and insects do
the babies like wet cat food too, like i said. they just need a little coaxing before they realise its food. he seems to like turkey-gravy FancyFeast. but ignoring the beef string

you can buy adult chinese mantises for like 5-15 USD. it only cost 30$ for 5 egg cases though, each of which produces 75-300 alienbugs
i wont be selling any. i have 4 more egg cases out doors, and i released 75% of these ones that i hatched inside.
im gonna release a few more, and let the rest battle it out
wanna know what the most balanced diet is for a mantis? other mantises.

after about 30 hours hatched, they still seem unwilling to eat eachother. they also don't want to eat the ground beef, or cat food, unless i coax them to by putting it in front of their face. they run away from eachother mostly
hopefully one of them balls up and starts eating his brethren, or else all i'll have is little Moonshoe, who has learned to love his catfood.

Fuck all those cat threads. This is by far the cutest thread I've ever seen. Moonshine is going to be the strongest mantis because he eats his cat food. I really hope he wins when the cannibalism starts.

even baby crickets are a little too big, unless youre willing to pick out the small ones with tweezers or something
at this stage, pretty much all they eat are Ahpids, teeny-tiny spiders, and fruit flies(the tiny ones)
i might be able to get flightless fruit flies from a local animal shop, but the problem is that they are so small that they can crawl through the mesh coving the terrarium
Moonshoe loves crawling on my arm. i wonder if my fruious typing upsets him? it must be like a damn earthquake to him

As long as food is abundant and they have a little space to get out of each others way, they're not going to become cannibals at this stage. Which species are they exactly?

i would if i could. if you lived nearby(pittsburgh) i would be happy to give you basically as many as you want. but i'm not equipped or informed enough to ship live insects
yeah though, apparently the egg cases are a gamble, because females lay them whether they are fertile or not. so if youre unlucky you could get a bunch of un-impregnated egg sacs that wont produce anything
i would be willing to bet that there are local sellers near you though. lots of exotic-animal shops that sell lizards also sell mantises

Moonshoe is doing pretty well. hes noticeably fattened up
theyve been around about 40 hours
there was a SNAFU with the cat food. turns out, gravy is like fucking quicksand for mantises. Moonshoe got stuck several times, and several mantises in the main emclosure basically drowned in it.
gotta be more careful. they are so delicate
cool part though, moonshoe barely even needs to be inside a container, he will sit in the same spot for hours on end. hes been sitting under my bankers light for like 3 hours now. so far i only need to put him in a container when im not around or asleep

when they get bigger, the males will get antsy and start flying around, the females i just leave on plants and they're fine as long as they're not hungry or thirsty.
I dunno about this cat food, every petco and petsmart will have flightless tiny flies you can feed them.

Growing up in Salinas (lettuce capitol of the world they call it, heavvvvy farming area) the local orchard supply hardware store had mantis egg sacks for 4 bucks, and lady bugs for like 6 bucks. You buy them to release them in your yard as pest control options.
I always tried to get my parents to let me buy a mantis egg sack to hatch and keep like OP is, but they always shot me down even though I've always been allowed to have oddball pets. Snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, lizards, geckos, etc

actually, i just ordered some egg cases from amazon
there are tons of dealers who sell mantis egg cases in the winter. i'd link you to the seller i bought them from, but theyre sold out. if you want to raise mantises, you buy the egg cases in the winter, and keep them refrigerated until you want them to hatch in 2-6 weeks. they're kind of a seasonal insect
adult mantises are pretty common in exotic animal shops during the spring and summer though, if you only want one and aren't feeling like raising, and thinning out a herd of 200 alienbugs

that particular species of mantis might not be a local one, but we already have mantises around here.
you seriously sound like some lame ass hippy in that post, blaming me for introducing a beneficial insect just because it comes from asia
the Japanese/Chinese mantis has the exact same diet, temperment, habitat, whatever, etc as the Carolina mantis
take note that the Carolina mantis is native to Pennsylvania. as well as several other species.

there might be 2300+ species of mantis, but like 2000 of them are the same damn thing with miniscule physical differences. they all do the same thing though, eat other bugs.
mantids can be found in almost every vegetative habitat on earth
I'm not introducing any invasive species.

Imma release Africanized honey bears in your neighborhood for the lulz If they smell honey in your house hundreds will swarm the dwelling! With teeth that can sting multiple times, they are not to be fucked with. The only out is to hide underwater with a small tube for breathing for atleast 30 minutes.

i'm not sure i understand. i had no idea carp or catfish were a problem. people love catching and eating those things.
whats wrong with fish? do they make the brook by your house stink?
as far as ball pythons.... ive never heard of that being a problem either. they are mostly pets, and non venomous.

got a new phone today, snapped some new pics
hes still the same size, but his torso is a little wider from eating. once he molts in 2-3 days, he should be about twice this size.

Moonshoe still hasn't molted. its got me a little worried, after 12 days. but it wouldn't be the first late molt i guess. after the first few days of feeding him wet catfood, hes been eating 2-3 gnats a day with plenty of water.
hopefully he will molt soon, or else moonshoes days are numbered

i let most of them out, there were about 200, kept about 40. mainly because it started raining, and they didnt want to leave yet
gonna let more out tomorrow, depending on how many are still there alive in the morning
eventually, there will only be one worthy of the terrarium.

Cool, I always thought mantises were cool.

well, from what i know from the internet, most mantises will stop eating and molt at around 7-14 days, and after that its likely that will stop eating and just not molt at all, starving themselves after a couple days
my main concern is that ive been smoking in the same room as him and may have fucked him up somehow
he hasnt actually stopped eating though, so, who knows

yeah. they think they are about to molt and stop eating, and then never end up molting and die.
they are even more vulnerable when theyre molting, cause they do it upside down and their bodies are basically goo while its happening. so if they fall, they end up deformed and generally die.
theyre delicate little things

We'll have him a shroomery funeral if he doesn't make it
If he's still eating it just seems he's not ready to molt. You said yourself they need Chitin, catfood has no Chitin, and chitin would be what his shell or skin or whatever he molts is made out of. So he might just not have the nutrients required to create his new skin.
Idk shit about mantises though, just connecting dots. Keep us posted on the life and times of Mr. Shoe.

Nice mantids.
I plan to breed some exotic mantids one day. My goal is to have a bunch of Ghost Mantis and Orchid Mantis. Both of those are so beautiful.
I'll have to grow my own food that flies though which will be the challenge.

Moonshoe has not molted, but hasnt passed away either.
hes been eating regularly. he actually ate the head of a blowfly, along with 3 gnats today. he ate more today than ever actually.
i just dont know whats wrong with the little guy. its been more than two weeks and he hasnt molted.
i'm hoping that its normal, and the internet has just misinformed me about their lifecycle

Unfortunately, Moonshoe passed away last night. probably 12-18 hours ago
yesterday he wouldnt eat, and would barely move at all. i got up this morning and he was laying flat on his side.
He was a pretty cool dude, but didnt want to molt. its probably my fault though, one way or another
this whole thread just turned depressing, but i figured i wouldnt leave anyone hanging.

That just reminded me of when I was in middle school some kid brought some small rodents to school, I forget exactly what. Hamsters maybe.
Anyways he was keeping them in his locker... Some escaped and one went and died in a girls bathroom or something. I thought it was kind of funny.
Besides the animal abuse side of it.
At the same school another kid stole his moms mace and brought it to school, the during class was excused to the bathroom where he ran around spraying it.
Mid class everyone started coughing all of a sudden then there was an alarm and a emergency broadcast to go outside ASAP.
At least one student and teacher were hospitalized due to allergies...

For what it's worth OP, the same thing happened to me when I tried to raise Carolina mantids. I don't think that species is the best for captivity; but some people seem to have a lot of success with them.
I want to try the giant Chinese mantid before ordering the trickier exotic ones.
Here's some mantid porn:

This is the ghost mantis, one of the species I want to breed:

And the orchids mantis, the other species I hope to someday breed:
