How do you make your bulk substrates?

What's up guys, I'm about to spawn 3 grain jars to some coco coir, verm, and earthworm castings in a 16qt double tub. I used about 6 quarts coir, 2 quarts verm, and half a quart of castings. What ratios do you use? Also, do you prefer using loose coir or bricks of coir??

Bricks are much cheaper and are pretty easy to pasteurize.

WBS spawned to coir (brick) at a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio with a heaping spoon of gypsum per tub, no casing. Aside from the obvious water, I only use those three ingredients.

This is the same mix i used but with different ratios . I bucket teked the coir and verm and misted the casings until moist and baked at 200 for 2 hours. 1 got cobweb pretty bad and i tossed it before trying to treat it but the other is very healthy and close to results.

I like bricks but I feel like if I break my coir bricks up (usually from a large 10 pound brick) it pasteurizes more easily / evenly.
1)I break off 650 grams from my giant coir brick and break it up well. 2)I add a modest handful of gypsum. 2 - 3 quarts of verm.
From here I follow Mudafuka's proper bucket pasteurization.
Because it kicks ass for pasteurizing in a bucket.

I used to break my bricks up entirely as well but lately I have just done everything in the tub itself, it saves me time.
Take 2 bricks, split them both in half so now 4 smaller bricks. About 7qts boiling water poured in and seal for 10ish minutes, open stir and close back, stir again in about 20mins and let sit till cool.

I use Muda Fuka's improved bucket tek with a insulated bucket I made and got rid of the other bucket and pot of water. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/remlinker.php?Cat=&Entry=143453&F_Board=2&Thread=19907089&Main=19907089

Pasteurizing in a cooler works great also

The loose bricks of coir are more than 3x the cost of the regular bricks. At least in my area that is.
Just make sure your sub is at field capacity before spawning

Yeah, I thought about using a cooler. I'm sure that would work just as good or even better. I think I'll try my cooler next. I have a cheep 30qt in my garage I use to use for dunking cakes.

When adding a nitrogen supplement such as worm castings, it is best to properly pasteurize your substrate since it is more prone to contamination. Mold spores don't readily germinate on coir and verm.

I used to bucket as well with coir only. I realized the pressure and resulting heat used to compress coir into such solid bricks must be astounding and all but the hardiest bacteria probably die in this process.

I use Damion5050's Coir Tek...
+ 1/2 quart of verm + 1 quart of water + a handful of gypsum
I mix in a 1:2 - 1:3 spawn to sub ratio and dunk my grains. I am still in the air on cased Vs Uncased.. Maybe I should run some tests.
This mix seems to give me the best results IME. I also use clear tubs and a liner instead of what is shown in the tek. Just play around and see what works best for you in your conditions.

I haven't used coir for cubes in a long time, but I'm going to do a CVG mini mono soon. Cool idea with the worm castings though. I might try that. I make my bulk subs from 50/50 hpoo/verm, but I'm gonna start adding some straw to the mix.

May I ask when does it become necessary for substrates/casings to be pasteurized? I thought cubes don't need a pasteurized substrate but I'm so unsure.

All bulk substrates need to be pasteurized. I've seen people here grow cubes on untreated coir, but I highly recommend learning all about pasteurization. Basically pasteurization of mushroom substrates is done to kill mold. If you try a manure or straw substrate without pasteurizing it, the only thing you'll grow is trich.

sorry to hijack this, its an old information that you should cover the sub/spawn mix with substrate being intentionally left for this purpose. at least with cubes?
