It shouldn't be that surprising. The justice/vengeance system regularly hands out worse sentences for drugs than for violence.

it's been a while since i looked into it but i guess he made the very first mention of "silk road" on the entire internet using his personal gmail address. they followed that handle to an internet cafe and went from there.

It's your classic Scarface, Studio 54 etc. scenario. Someone will come along and put their twist on his business model, then they'll get popped, and someone will come along and put their twist on that business model etc. etc, and the cycle will continue. The only difference is this guy being the "first", they're going to throw the book at him..
The fucked up thing is right now...right now.. he's sitting in cinderblocks.. I wonder what he's thinking about..what he's having for dinner etc.

no... in the very beginning when he first launched his site, he wanted to get some exposure. so he logged onto a website and said "hey has anyone ever heard of this silk-road site? they have mushrooms for sale. are they any good?". but when signing up for the forum, he used his real gmail address. i guess he didn't expect silk road to be so big.
so, fbi searched around for the earliest mention of silk road and found his post. they spotted it as a cheesy attempt to market his online business (it's a common strategy in e-commerce). so, after investigating, they found his identity matched the profile of someone who would build a silk road site. for example, on his linked in page it mentioned something about bitcoin.
after that, they ambushed him in a library while he was on his laptop using tor. because he was logged in and the computer was on, the HD was not encrypted at the time, so fbi has complete access to EVERYTHING (including his chat history with the fake hitman, his accounting spreadsheets, etc).
hell of a story and there's a lot to learn there. fbi is clever. they can probably find anyone if they decide to put the resources towards it.

straight into the govt's pockets...
"The government noted that the pending civil forfeiture against Ulbricht, which includes the bitcoins found on his laptop at the time of his arrest, can be credited to the judgement. That includes 700,000 bitcoins, which were worth $13.4 million at the time of transactions but are worth $166,124,000 at current conversion rates."
Considering there can be only 24million bitcoins ever, having 700K of them is an amazing accomplishment... Thats like what 1/34 of all bitcoins? I wonder what the gov will do with those bitcoins, will they sell them back into the market for local currency, or just destroy it by deleting it. We can figure gov will not like bitcoin because it circumvents their fiat currency. It would be many gov interest to attack and destroy bitcoin.

but remember that was back when 1 bitcoin was worth like $10.
