Here's a video that explains how the rear wheel of your car works. From the basics 2

Every good mechanic knows that there's a differential in the rear axle of a car, most know how to repair it if broken. But do you know how it works and why it is necessary?
Here's a great vid that explains it from the very basic aspect of it. I found it very cool

Differentials are a bitch to DYI unless you have a lift. And even then most vehicles that need differentials are going to need more then that. Shit and up there and here they are usually rusted on . Using a acetylene torch or an angle grinder to cut off the u bolts.
Shit sounds like a gun going off. I've done it with out a real lift a few times. All the times it's been rusty. Some a lot of the time it's a lot easier to just swap out the whole rear axel . When you are under a 4 ton truck doing this with out a lift things get really fun.

Differentials are indeed very cool in how they work around corners so that the rear wheels maintain different speeds while cornering. Especially Limited Slip Diffs for straight line acceleration. (LSD's )
A technology that hasn't changed much since this video was introduced.
With that said, probably around 75% of the cars on the world's roads do not use differentials anymore, they use transaxles connected directly to the transmission for the drive wheels (front, not rear anymore) and use independent rear axles meaning no need for differentials.
Like trekie said thouhg. Diffs are a pain in the ass to work on.
Edit: FWD cars do have diffs if my post confused you, just happens that they are inside the transmission running with the same fluid. Therefore transaxles.

I understand why they are needed (wheel on the outside of the turn needs to go faster so just connecting them with a solid axle causes some problems) but my mental picture of what the gearing would look like might not be the most accurate.

I like that. I haven't had a RWD vehichle since 2005. A burgundy 1994 Mercury Cougar with the 4.6L V8. She was such a dream to drive and to spin the tail out. Until the intake manifold cracked and a few months later an electrical fire melted anything that would melt under the hood intro a glob of shame.
That's a 1990's ford for you, though. It was fun while it lasted.

No. You get a barrel of 80w diff oil that we can spray at each other while frolicking around a junkyard.

Found on Road dead .
One is a 95 gmc 3500 with a v 8 and a 2in lift. Only Rw drive and is purely a work truck. I love this truck.
The other is a 95 2 door Cherokee sport. It is 4x4 but it needs work . At least the axle/ differentials. I'm debating whether or not to do a tear down of the diffs and a rear axle with a refurbish kit. Mine doesn't have ABS. So finding what I want for how much I can spend on a v6 with manual with 230k on it.I also don't have a garage.

I haven't worked on a 4WD diff(s) since I was in auto tech school and it still gives me the cold sweats. Good luck to you, sir.
The 95 chevy on the other hand is one of my favorite trucks. No matter what year. Be it from the 50's or current, they are all wonderful vehicles in my book. Especially for work as you use it.

Ican't understand you car people. I don't know shit about cars (except for how differentials work) and I could not care less about them. I should definitely know more about them but I have like 0.1% interest in doing so.
Like I watch fast and the furiou for the action, but when they are showing naked car porn and a bunch of guy jerking off in front of a popped hoods with all these shiny chrome pieces and the occasional bright colored piece between the chrome, I just don't get it anymore.
"Yeah, this is a nitro super booster connected directly to the drive shaft with triple intake of whatever the fuck to increase the RPM 0.02 seconds faster than your standard racing clutch...."

Yeah gmc trucks are awesome. I've towed a few tons with it. With a full bed. The truck was made 21 years ago and still has more balls then most of what's on the road today.
the jeep I might just sell and get something better. I'm not opposed to do work. I replaced all the hoses fixed the heating and cooling systems and rewired lots of things. Not to mention all the fluid change and some metal work.
I need a friend with a proper lift and tools. I'll buy a weekends worth of beer and weed if you help and let me sleep in my hammock for a few days.

It's a hobby to some people, a passion to others, and a career for many. For me it's something I truly lovED and went to school for a decade ago but my interest has dramatically waned over the years.
It's just nice to be able to fix my own car without having to shovel over 100 dollars an hour in labor to some mechanic that could give a shit about my car.
It's neither a hobby, passion, or career (as it used to be) for me anymore. It's just a matter of practicality. Although my penis still tingles a bit when I see a beautifully restored 72 Chevelle SS running a stroked out 454.
I ask you, what hobbies do you have? This is more rhetorical as whatever your hobbies may be, they are most certainly "Chinese" to other people.

I don't know where you're located, but that would be fair payment if you're nearby. I no longer have a lift but do have free access to one.
