The gov of Canada is removing all sales tax on female hygiene product starting July 1st

So all tampons, cups, maxi pads, and all these mysterious things women use every month will now be sold tax free because it is an "essential product" and will bring forth stronger ender equality.
Personaly I'm a fan of every tax cuts imaginable. I thinks this is a great move by the government. Every party voted in favor of the bill and it passed with flying colors.
So what's your opinion on this?
Quote:
Tampons will be a little cheaper as of Canada Day now that the Conservative government is moving to exempt feminine hygiene products from GST.
The House of Commons unanimously adopted an NDP-sponsored motion calling for the change earlier this month — a motion that passed after women in the Conservative caucus threatened to boycott the vote if their party didn’t approve.
Opponents of the tax have long decried it as being entirely discriminatory, as it is only paid by women, and on an essential product, while other goods deemed as luxuries escape the levy altogether.
After the motion passed, the government said they would make the change in a future budget bill, but on Thursday a notice appeared from Finance Canada that the tax would indeed disappear on July 1.
Why the change is happening now wasn’t immediately clear. Finance Minister Joe Oliver, who is overseas for G7 meetings, was not available for comment. Conservative MP Michelle Rempel called the change in line with the government’s lower-tax policies.
The New Democrats suggested another reason — it’s an election year.
“Women have made it very clear that they are paying attention,” said MP Irene Mathyssen, who brought the motion before the Commons and also had a private member’s bill on the subject.
“After 25 years you run out of excuses of why there’s a discriminatory tax on the books.”
Why feminine hygiene products weren’t exempted from the GST when it was implemented, when other essential goods were, is unknown though several provinces do not add their sales taxes to the goods.
Legislative efforts to remove the GST date back years, but the idea found added support this year with an online petition that eventually received more than 70,000 signatures.
Jill Piebiak, a political activist and the petition’s founder, said she was thrilled when the motion was passed, but didn’t know what to expect next, given the government’s vague future commitment.
She said she’s overjoyed to hear the tax is coming off as of July, citing strong female leadership on both government and opposition benches. But she also called it a testament to the power of the grassroots.
“I think people should continue to speak up when they see injustice and work hard to change it,” she said. “This campaign shows that it can be done.”
The Finance Department notice says the tax will no longer apply to “a supply of a product that is marketed exclusively for feminine hygiene purposes and is a sanitary napkin, tampon, sanitary belt, menstrual cup or other similar product.”

This. Well said because this is what it's all about. If only the people in the US could grasp such highly advanced concepts.

No objections, but this raises questions of what an "essential product" is. Is filet mignon taxed? What about milk?

That's good. I dont look at it as gender equality though. It's a good start though, for what the products are it's kinda pricey and it adds up. If they really want gender equality for these types of articles then maybe condoms and such should be tax free too. Idk. Now a days a lot of things are necessary. But yeah, good call Canada

I've said this for years, glad it's coming around. I was talking about toilet paper though. I can't understand why we paid tax on tp. seems crazy because just about all of us HAVE to have it.

What exactly would a male essential product be just out of curiosity?
In other countries where girls can't afford these products they're forced to use things like cow dung during their cycles which is not only embarrassing but causes medical problems...

Idk tampons are a huge bio hazard containing human blood... and the applicators cause a HUGE issue for waste water treatment. Tampons arnt a necessity but a modern convenience the majority of human civilization made due without them.
Albeit a very easy and handy one and helps women around the globe, however its plastic constituents cause a huge issue for pollution and everything. Im torn on this one.

Forced to use things like cow dung? I'd think rags are a lot more common for this purpose. Personally I don't think condoms should be taxed either, not sure offhand whether they are or not.

very true, im not versed enough to know the ratios women buy each in, id imagine the plastic applicators are more common but i could be wrong...
and beanhead no i never mentioned the oceans, but its very expensive for waste water treatment plants to remove the plastic applicators let alone tampons themselves as its considered bio-hazard waste.
I have nothing against women using them. I was just noting the majority of human history women have gotten by without them one way or another. I implore the women who still use sponges or something else that can be reused. kudos to them.

In Africa yes they do in fact use dung in the poor rural areas...rags aren't something they just have sitting around to use for those things. I've looked into shipping products there but the government would charge them so much to recieve the package they wouldn't be able to afford it.
Also having sex is a choice, girls don't get to chose to have a menstrual cycle or not.

Still nothing against it, I think its made women's lives much easier and increased their quality of life and ours. I just think we need to reevaluate our goals and means to the end.

I think it's not as common because women don't know they have the option to use the ones without applicators. I've also never heard of anyone flushing plastic applicators, seems like that toilet would never work right again if they did lol there are always little special containers just for used feminine products in the women's restrooms here so Idk why anyone would flush them.

Good for you for thinking of that, maybe those reusable cup things would work out to be more worthwhile to ship.

It's true that they are not perfectly analagous, but IIRC prescribed medications like birth control pills aren't taxed either. The more accessible condoms are the better though I think, for both men and women.

Very true... .However i do know its an expensive thing to deal with at waste water treatment plants. Now i know most dont flush them but i do know a good deal do end up at these sort of places and its expensive to deal with... Let me see if i can find the link.

That's what I was thinking too but the water isn't always available to clean them or its so contaminated it causes infection...I tried so hard to think of something for those girls but I lost that battle there was just something standing in the way around every corner.

Id agree birth control is not a good comparison. As a women has no choice her period will come (for most....). Its not possible to live as a women and not experience a period (for the large majority). While sex is human, its not something that WILL happen or something that's out of our own free will.

It depends on a number of factors though, there are a number of "junk food" items that are always taxed but I believe anything in a restaurant is taxed no matter how healthy it is, and certain grocery store items are taxed when sold as single servings but not when they're sold in bigger containers.

Yeah I agree it's a weak comparison, I don't think there are any hygiene needs unique to men that really are directly comparable.

here's how you fight then, every man, man, and man child, should go out and buy tampons for themselves, EMPTY THE SHELVES MEN, buy them all up, and leave the women with nothing, that will send them a message, that sexism shouldn't be pushed down from the government, and men want EQUAL RIGHTS
also, you can then trade tampons for sex

Apparently you've never cleaned a womans restroom in a business. or had to snake out pads that dumb bitches flush down the toilet when the receptical is right next to them. Womens restrooms are always dirtier than mens.

So are you.
Food items are not taxed.
Depends on what state you are in some states tax food and healthcare items. While my state Pennsylvania only taxes food that can be eaten as is kind of confusing that I can go buy a ready made deli sandwich and get taxed but if I buy the makings for it and make my own sandwich it is not taxed. As well at least here things like OTC medicines, tooth paste tampons, soaps and shampoos and stuff like that are all non-taxable.

That logic fails dude. Sex is a consensual act between two people. A woman's period is not something they choose to do. For this reason, birth control and abortions are not the same thing as food, water, and basic human needs.

The woman would not have a period if she was never born. If her dad wore a condom to avoid getting her mom pregnant. Just like the man would not be able to use these tax breaks if he were never born because his dad wore a condom.

I just pull out every time. Every single time I hear about someone getting "accidentally" pregnant I ask them if they let the dude blow their load inside. I hear crickets every time. I can't even sleep at night for a month if I blow it up in a girl, even if she tells me to and is on the pill. Fuck that. Not worth it and condoms suck.

Lambskin condoms are actually quite good if the chick makes you wear one. Only problem is its $5.50 a pop. Still worth it imo

You must have a really good job...I'll be getting about 50k from my kids dad and this just started last week. The sad thing is I gave him the option to either be there for his son emotionally or financially and that's what he chose...I would much rather it be the other way around than have the money.

I'm only seasonal right now and I'm a full-time student. I don't work about 3 months max out of the year and there are slower times. Sometimes I'll work 6 days a week. Still living check to check . My case worker hates me with a passion.

That looks like my phone bill. US cells phones have a tax to provide low income people with phones because they are seen as essential. Ironic, because if they are essential like food and water, why does income determine taxability? This is why I am in favor of smaller government and less taxes across the board.

Holy crap I thought I was getting ripped off, I use around 5$ per month in actual usage but my bill is around 20$ including sewage and there were times when I would be away for the month and I'd still get a 3$ and something sewage bill having not used any water, and a 13$ and change water bill just for service and taxes.

Here they started remodeling city hall and all of a sudden everyone's bill was over $200 for a month. It wasn't just me it was everyone in town.

If we all voted for
In favor: remodelling the City hall.
Then all is swell.
But I don't know your community, your family, your friends, your employers, the people that work... What benefit do they reap?

Oh nothing was said...they just jacked everyone's shit up like they used more water than they actually did. There's no way in hell every single person in town used 3-4x the water they normally used for that particular couple of months.

So under your plan even at 13 galons a month that only leaves about 2 glasses A day for drinking So I guess we can forget about batheing or washing dishes or clothes and god forbid flushing the toilet. So basically you want to put a tax on people being hygenic. And no it is far below the bare minimum. Glad I don't have to hike the desert with you I'd be getting a shotglass of water a day.

whether you're rich or poor you probably go through about the same amount of toilet paper. I'm sure rich and poor people waste toilet paper too, but we all use it and it's the poor people that get hit the hardest by taxes on essential items.

No. The bleeding is continuous. You would have to keep wiping.
With poop, its OK. You poop out your shit, and it's done coming. Then you apply the stick.

ok guys, what about a drain plug? just let them pussys fill up with blood, once your full the drain plug rings a bell, then you go to one of those 5 minute jiffy lubes and they drain you, maybe do a coolant flush, and away you go, best of all the drain plugs are reuseable and good for the enviroment
and if you wanted another incentive it could double as a wifi spot

There is a pretty big difference between a holiday from a war on independence and a holiday about the celebration of the existence of a country. The american revolution was a pretty big fucking deal.

A celebration of the date they became a country is obviously also a celebration of the existence of the country.

The country as such began to exist when it became independent. Canada Day is the anniversary of the date of the creation of Canada. But yeah, Independence Day is an extra special flower and I'm sure it does not in any way celebrate the United States as a country.
