What all would one need to make a shed a home?

Yes you can,
People live in whatever they have to. I have a Friend that is doing exactly what you asked about rent is averaging $1200 per month in my area...
He got a 8 X 24 storage building for himself , it takes some adjustment but he said it really isn't too bad

You need to get geared up for living out of a backpack.  Tent, pad, sleeping bag, cooking stove, cookset, water filter, water bottle, clothes.  Don't bring your guitar or other shit that is hard to carry.

My bachelor apartment isn't really all that big.. I don't think it would be too difficult an adjustment if I was able to incorporate amenities like running water and electricity.

I lived under a tree with a sleeping bag for a few months during western Washington's rainy spring.
Shed would've been a massive upgrade! :crazy2:

I was homeless for about two years. I lived out of a $20 hammock. Military sleeping bag and cover.

5 hour Tiki torch cans for light at night.

Kept everything in Ziploc bags. Washed clothes once a week. Bathed in a creek, which was fucking cold.

Never used a tent cause they're hot to sleep in.

A shed would have been a mansion.

I used to walk five miles to and from school every day, uphill, in the snow, carrying a water urn on my head in addition to books and homework.

Absolutely you can - and depending on your skill level, budget and vision you could make a shed look far nicer on the inside than many homes.

There are, of course, obstacles to overcome. The main one is plumbing - running water for preparing food, showering and toilet usage will be important if you wish to have those amenities available under your own roof. You can set up very simple drum & hose type systems to address the food prep and showering aspects - the toilet is another matter. There are plenty of off grid style toilets available - most of them look pretty gross in day to day usage to me, although there is one that looked pretty liveable.

It's called the DryFlush (http://www.treehugger.com/bathroom-design/dryflush-toilet-will-change-world.html). No smell and relatively pain free clean up process - only problem is the replacement bags are expensive so you essentially end up paying a $1 every time you use the toilet.

Electricity should be simple to set up - a small solar array connected to some deep cycle batteries will provide you with 12V power. Add an inverter and you can run any common appliance. Better yet is just run a single power cord from an adjacent building, connect a 12 socket power board to that and you're off and racing.

The other obstacle to overcome is social stigma - inviting members of the opposite sex back to your shed won't exactly be easy

If you live in the US the answer is yes...until you get caught. A shed that is built to the code required for an inhabited building is called a house. If you get caught you will face legal trouble. To avoid this there are loopholes such as building a mobile "shed". If a building isn't permentently affixed to the ground it isn't subject to the same codes, which is why many tiny homes are built on utility trailers.

I've seen people livng in the storage unit across from my highschool . I guess if you only come home to sleep then it doesn't matter if its in a shed because a shed is better than a shoe box in the raining alley.

Problem is building codes... If you use an accessory building as a dwelling it's illegal in most places. Part of the tiny house movement is changing this bullshit.

Where I'm about to live the code requires septic and 600sqf minimum habitable space. If you are caught be aerial surveillance you are fined and it's more difficult to obtain future permits

What an odd country we live in where we do not even posses the freedom to subject ourselves to poverty and hovel dwellings.

Ya know, I look at my camper, it's an 18 foot, with bathroom shower, kitchen... And I think how much I'd really like to live there. Currently my house is a 3 bedroom with a full finished basement, it just seems like the more room I have, the more junk I accumulate.

I actually did live there for three months before I bought my house, it was nice, it was "cozy"

My dream is actually to retire and buy a "small" RV, and just drive around in my little house.:lmafo:

Good luck to you!

Wow, turning a shed into a home? If you have other alternatives, then go for it. But in case you still insist, a huge bag would be a great help to store and pack all your things.

Living in a shed is no different to a house except in looks and a lack of insulation. If it's cold get blankets or insulate the shed yourself. If its too hot again you can insulate or get a fan. I lived in a shed for 2 years in 38+ degree Celsius in 70+% humidity. It was a nightmare but livable. There are plenty of fully furnished sheds that look exactly like a house from the inside, it just depends on your financial situation.
