Cuttings that large and mature will be fine in the sun. You can already tell by it's size that it has received sunlight before being cut. It's the young small cuttings that get sun burnt and dry up. The cactus will only grow etiolated if it's already struck roots and begins new growth while in low light. If it shows any new growth whatsoever, acclimate it to full sun asap.

I have teeny tiny cuttings in full sun,and they aren't burnt at all.

I also meant if people are rooting cacti in shade, and continue to grow them in shade they will eventually start to stretch.

I should have been more specific:cool:

Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that it can't happen. It's a real thing that others should be aware of, especially when talking about non trichocereus columnars. Trichs tend to be a little stronger in this regard, but not all cactus are as hearty.

Oh,I didn't say it can't happen:lol:

I'm just letting people know that cacti are the hardiest species of plant on the planet, and don't need to be babied, that's all:thumbup:

Do you think in the scorching desert when a pup or arm of a cactus is knocked off the parent plant,it's babied, and pampered in full shade?

Of course not,it's left in the full sun to root, and they root fine.

I'm just giving people my opinion on it,because I've noticed too many people on here baby their cacti, and it's not needed.

They don't survive the harshest, and driest places on this planet for no reason:wink:

I could also show you tiny non trich pups that I just broke off the parent plants and put in full sun, which are totally rooted right now too.

No one has to listen to me,it's just my opinion, and I have grown like this for nearly 15 years, with no problems whatsoever:thumbup:

Maybe you should try something different for a change, and I guarantee you'll like what you see:wink:

I also tried a coupe of times rooting trichs inside in low light levels,or outdoors in shade, opposed to out in the full sun.

It always took two months or longer for them to strike roots,so I never did it that way ever again.

Now I root all my plants outdoors in full sun,and it takes anywhere from two weeks to no more than a month.

Now then, tell me how my methods could be misinformation?

I'm not disagreeing with you KBG, more like elaborating on your point here. You have success with rooting in full sun, but also I'm sure they were cut/broken from a cacti that was in full sun to begin with, right? I'm sure that a pup from a shade grown cactus trying to root in full sun would show some distress, don't ya think?

Like I said, I'm not refuting your point - my cuttings are all going to be full sun from now on, right next to the rest of my cacti.

Dude I don't know why but I have many cuttings atm even degrafted peres scions in full sun rooting and I haven't had any problem whatsoever with any of them. though they only tend to get 6-8 hours of full direct sunlight in a day. BTW none of my grafts were in full sun at any point because I've kept them growing under my lights since they seem to do so well there and I have less to worry about with them in there.

It may just be our weather kactus that allows us to do this but I kinda doubt it because we can get pretty hot and nasty down here.

Huh, well I don't know. Just sounds like more reason to go full sun with cuttings to me.

You can disagree with me man,it doesn't bother me at all:cool:

Most people disagree with my methods anyway:lol:

I have actually received cacti from members on here, some of which were grown indoors, and I threw them straight out in full sun, without acclimating them first, that very day I received them.

For instance, spaceman sent me some tiny Trichs seedlings, that I'm pretty sure were grown inside, and I put them right out in the sun that very day,and they are looking fantastic now.
They never burned,or showed any signs of distress either.

Ferrels last batch he sent me,went to straight to full sun too,and some had not a root.

Some of the cuttings I take and root, are from cacti that are used to being in full sun,but some are not.

I took some cactus cuttings from some plants my grandmother had growing inside her house,a couple weeks back, and I threw them right out into the sun.
They are now already rooted, and look fantastic!

I can't think of any other place that gets as hot,and humid, with such intense sun, than the South Eastern US,so it's not just because of where I'm located either.

sounds like Kactus just has a good climate for growing. If I threw them here in full sun, they would rot from too much water. That's why I do them the various ways I do. Mine take 3-5 weeks to root. Im on day 11 of my large pedros.

I have a couple pretty big juuls that have done nothing so far but sit up straight and try to flower.skinnier bridgesii are doing pretty good after a month in soil.just one of those dont want to root for some odd reason.thinking about laying it down but its pretty nice looking.might cut her in half and log the bottom section and keep the top upright.
