rooting cutting question
    #21733180 - 05/28/15 04:22 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Should I keep cuttings waiting to root in full shade?or is shade until one or two and full sun the rest of the day ok?

I've had cuttings that were accidentally left in full sun that turned yellow then shriveled up and died. They are best kept in shade until signs of new growth and/or roots.

I assume you are talking cactus cuttings here, right?

I am going to continue by assuming you are.

The answer really depends on what amount of sunlight they were in beforehand.

The safe answer is somewhere shaded, but with good ventilation.
If they were growing somewhere they are used to a lot of sun already, some sun will be fine. In fact some members here prefer it and claims it speeds the rooting process.

'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

the majority of cuttings do better in shaded areas because they are generally left to callous in the shade. Thinner cuttings might die easier if left in the sun.

I have never lost a cutting in full sun, from little tiny ones,to big thick ones.

Plan was to let them stay in shade/afternoon sun till they rooted.then put them in full sun.they all look pretty good just slowly putting out roots.none out of the bottom just some creeping out the side like pushing through the green.

Are they in soil yet?

I personally thought they would burn up in full sun but this is the first time ive rooted anything.I bought some pedro at lowes couple years back that I lost to the frost so im just being very careful about how I go about things.I miss those cacti dearly got 8inches of new growth in one summer.

I figured they were that's why I said full sun:lol:

If they aren't in soil then I don't know because I never root my cacti in anything but dry soil, and full sun.

The sun here is something fierce too!

You also don't have to listen to me,I'm just telling you how I do things.

I just took some cutting a few days back, and they have been in full sun ever since, with no signs of burning.

They are really small cutting too,and I currently reside in Kentucky, which is know for extreme heat and humidity!

I just moved like half my cacti into full sun, will be slowly moving the rest out.

After all this full sun rooting talk I may have to move a couple rooting cuttings out of their shaded spot sooner than I was planning.

Maybe put the monster trich log I got into full sun to speed up its rooting/growth.

Me to buddy. I thought I backed kactus in this thread already but I must had forgot to post. Anyways I usually allow my cuttings sit outside getting around 6-8 hours of sun and the rest shade "really because it's the best place I have for them".

Honestly I've noticed no burning, drying or anything like that and it seems to strike roots quicker than when I shaded my cuttings in the past.

Another thing shade will do to your cacti is cause the to severely stretch and look plain awful,if they stay in it long enough.
