How I drain my grains after boiling

I always seem to spill a lot of grains when draining with a collander. A lot of them slip through the holes too. Slightly annoying, to me anyway. I took a 4'X4' piece of window screen and laid it in the sink, dumped the grains in, then hung it with a small rope. I didn't loose any grains, and it makes it easy to toss them around to let the steam escape. It really works well. Give it a try.

Good idea, whatever works. Although its probably not very good for the hinges on your cabinet...

do the grains in the middle dry sufficiently? cool idea! i usually toss around for a minute then dump on doubled up newspaper then fold the newspaper and just dump grains in jars. works wonderfully and its its pretty tidy once you get a a good flow.

I've had problems with bacteria from not drying my grains. I am a firm believer that they need to be dry on outside and wet on inside.

The way I do mine, they come out dry. I just messed around with soak and simmer times until I got the grains hydrated just right that they had enough moisture left on them that it gets absorbed during the pc cycle and they come out perfect. I don't really have a simmer time, I just pop a few in my mouth every few minutes until the texture is just right.

Only way I can prevent millet from exploding is to load them underhydrated and still wet. They actually finish hydrating with the extra water in the jar. Be careful not to over fill as its gonna expand a fair bit. But it gets me a perfect prep everytime.

I have a wire mesh strainer. I actually bought it so I could try my hand at cooking Quinoa, but it works fine for millet or rye too. 9$ at a kitchen outlet store in one of the local failing malls.
I actually fit it inside my regular colander though. The mesh isn't exactly stiff, and it tends to flatten a bit and wobble otherwise.

A pillowcase works well too. I use the same one for draining bulk substrates too.

I tried a window screen but the water just stayed in the little squares. Tried everything, turning grains, shaking the screen, spreading them out more. Seems a strainer was the only method that actually drained the water

Agreed.
I line a 5 gallon bucket with a pillowcase. Fill the bucket about 1/3 full with grain, and then submerge it all in boiling water. Once the water cools, I pull up the pillowcase and let it drain. Any remaining water is absorbed during the PC cycle.
Perfect everytime.
