how do outdoor beds of woodlovers beat senescence???
    #21732583 - 05/28/15 01:19 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

outdoor beds of woodlovers seem to last years as long as there is plenty of wood left to eat.
how do they do this??
are new genetics added to the mycelium network from spore deposits keeping things fresh so to speak and avoiding ageing?
sorry for the noobish question

They just go til they die which is years. Cubes can go for a long time too. We just have lots of good genetics when working with such small spores or slants in the fridge, so it makes sense to always work with a younger culture over an older one.

Also mushrooms don't age like we do. They age every time the mycelium expands. The genetics gets a little bit "messed" up every time it divides and expands. Spores start with a set amount of times it can divide and expand until the genetics get scrambled enough to die.

In our hobby where we're making them expand at frankly insane rates, they'll have divided so much more in a way shorter time over just spreading outwards in a patch
