Here it is guys. 143.5 quart pc. Took a plate of stainless steel and had it rolled into shape. Cut a circle out of another plate and welded it to the bottom. Used a plate to make the top and machined it to fit the top of a 941aa. Used expandable metal for the shelves. I'll give her a test run tonight. Enjoy the pics.

I'll be using the lid from a 941. It won't go pop. Those lids have safety features. Our 15 psi is different than a sealed unit like an air tank.

Did you design that to ASME Section III?
If the lid has a relief valve at 15 psi there's no way that tank is failing.

That's one awesome PC. Honestly it made me laugh because of how tall it is. I'm curious how much water you'd need to make it last a whole cycle since there is so much space for the steam.
Also how are you gonna heat that sucker? I'd be kinda worried about it falling down while PCing or something, that'd be a disaster.
Anyways can't wait to see it up and running!

You'll need to rig up a cart with casters to move it around. Maybe tall enough to roll over a propane burner. Might make it too tall though. How'd you cut the seal angle?

I have 10 inches of dedicated space at the bottom for water, before the first shelf goes in. It holds 21 half gallon jars on 3 shelves. Not sure how many bags, but a lot. Will be heated on a low to the ground propane burner. It weighs 97lbs empty. Will not be moving it and I'll empty water occasionally with a small pump. Lid holes were cut with a cnc and a mig welder was used for welding.

did you finish or polish the bottom seal after CNC or did you get the seal tight finish right from a finishing bit? Being it's stainless how did you run that mig setup to be completely anaerobic to get such nice looking welds, does it look that nice where it penetrated on the inside?

that looks pretty damn good, I hardly weld but all of our welds have to be "dairy quality" we have to purge the inside of the weld too and if possible polish the inner surface of the weld. aseptic welds look like robots did them but for using trimix that looks great there's not any black pits or anything. pretty awesome

Thanks man. I taught myself to weld when i was probably 12 or so. And though I'm not a "welder" i do a lot of glass and metal sculptural work. So my welds have to look good. I find, like many things, confidence helps a lot

Nice build. The real test comes at operating time.
How many bags exactly that can be fitted into that thing is entirely going to depend on how full you fill your bags. You say you can get 21 half gallon jars in there, so I would speculate that 18 - 2 gallon/8 quart bags would fit into that device comfortably, or 32 - 4 quart/1 gallon bags.

Just put 6 gallons if water in it, tightened the lid with exhaust manifold bolts and fired her up. I was carrying it from the lab to my house and needed my girlfriend to get the door. She just stood there like girls do. So i yelled, "open the fucking door!!" She yelled back and left. Bitches man. I wasn't yelling at her. I was yelling as a motivating factor. So the pc may have cost me my relationship. I'll keep ya'll posted on that and this pc.

Alright, blew some steam out at the lid area in one spot. This was a concern of mine as you can never roll it in a true circle. I shut it down and I'm running to a buddy's to grab something to use as a gasket. Update very soon

Excellent Job Azur, man, that thing is a tank! what gauge(or schedule) stainless is the tank? As you know(I think) I'm a welder by trade, and I hold many certifications throught the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau (NCPWB), stainless steel mig welding being one, and I have seen people who do that type of welding everyday, and still have trouble laying such a consistent fillet weld, for you to be able to do that taught on your own is amazing in itself, nonetheless everything else involved with building that pc, BRAVO azur, VERY nice job man!

Hey thanks imperfect. That means a lot coming from you.
So i got a 16 inch bicycle tube to use as gasket and got up to 13 psi and the gasket blew out where the bir is. Made a god awful scary high pitched noise so i shut her down. I missed a tiny little bir at the seal. Tomorrow when it's cool I'll clean it up and I'll get that bad boy running. I have no doubts. It got to 10psi within 10 min (though the water was already very very hot) This is gonna be awesome. You know, the whole build i was never scared. But I'll admit tonight that thing was a little intimidating. Excited for the morning. Night ya'll

No. It's a 9143.5
Fired it up at 3:20 with a inner tube for a gasket. It's up to 10psi and rising. One tiny little spot bubbling out. On Monday I'll get a custom gasket made at the water jet place. I took the exhaust manifold bolts out and put carriage bolts in with nuts to lock them in place. Then put the lid on and used washers and wing nuts. Worked great.

Got it to 14psi and couldn't get it any higher. Held it there for 10 min at idle fuel. The little leak prevented it from climbing. I suppose a higher btu burner would have gotten it up, but I'm just gonna get a gasket made on Monday and that'll do the trick. Thanks for all your interest in this. It's been a fun project.

You should test it at at least 20psi just to make sure it's safe to let your guard down at 15. A proper gasket is much better than excessive heat. This is awesome though, nice project!

i figure it works for head gaskets *shrug*... paint on bottom side and allow to dry. since the top goes on the other pot too.
or if you dont care, i'd paint it on both sides.... the smoother the better. so you could spray some release agent on some plexi, or something else smooth... (pam should work)

Lol be safe brotha. Rxb knows where it's at, I would use high temperature silicone. That shit can do high temperature and high pressure. Should last you a good while too. I just take it off with a grinder/flat head lol
I'm hoping the middle doesn't warp for the shelves not to fit lol but they factory test pressure cookers to withstand 200 psi so I doubt 15 will warp it. Gotta break her in and report back! I love diys

This might be a newb question but how come you didn't just cut the aa941 in half horizontally and insert the rolled metal to extend it. That way you would have the original metal to metal seal and the nice wing nuts.

I considered that, but i felt one long vertical weld was better than 2 horizontal ones. Plus stainless is easier (for me) to work with than aluminum

If I asked a welder to extend the PC with aluminum, what do you think would be a fair price for parts and labor for that job? What's a fair price for doing the steel method you used? I'm sure some people are going to want one of these but won't have the skill to do it themselves, that's why I'm asking.

I'm a busy guy. You want me to build you one, $2500. I'm sure you could get someone local to build it for a grand. I only have a few hundred bucks invested in it. The hard part is as soon as you mention the word "pressure" most people won't want anything to do with it. I felt confident building this because 1) i aim for craftsmanship in everything i do and 2) I've seen some niggered up home made pc's on here that did work, so i had no doubt mine would.

all silicone is high temp, even kitchen and bath some just have fungicide or agents that make them more or less brittle when cured. All of the home and house silicone is RTV even thought it doesn't say RTV silicone on the side. it cures from moisture in the air and smells like vinegar(acetic acid) = RTV.
I would use something super flat like a pain of glass. level the bottom using a 4 way water level or lasers! and then level the flat plate on top too. but that's probably what you would do anyway

I work with pressure boilers of a similar enough size. They are 1.5mm thick wall, and 5mm thick base & lids. I have tested them to 100psi with air.
I would recommend treating the welds, pickling paste, acid treat or whatever the welder has. Citric acid is easily got and is better than nothing.
I would always pressure test it first with air or cold water. If you are testing boiling actual water in it then I would use very little water, certainly not 6 gallons as that's a huge amount of energy to be released if it failed. It doesn't look like any welds would fail but just warning others if they tried a similar thing.
I have used rubber tubing to connect different diameter pipes together, i.e. I cut a section out and pulled it over the two mating tubes. The rubber does not hold up to temperature at all, goes sort of brittle. An easy source of gaskets is silicone baking sheets, which are just big rubber sheets about 1.5 or 2mm thick -very cheap compared to trying to get silicone sheeting from some industry suppliers. If you cannot get them the silicone should be fine. On yours I would possibly put silicone on the uneven side and then put my cut out baking sheet gasket on top of that. This would give a nice smooth top to it and it should not adhere to the lid. If you use just silicone sealant as a gasket it can tend to lift/pull off when up pull the mating part off. You can use plumber grease or vaseline to lower the chance of that.
In this old thread I described a way to make one from a keg, with no welding needed at all. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10891050
Quote:
blackout said: Another option is to simply use an existing pressure cooker, cut a hold in the bottom, and a matching hole in the top of the keg, then they could be welded together. This could be bolted too, the dome shape is a problem though. I would cut a hole in the bottom of the pressure cooker which is about 40mm in from the outside diameter. Now you could drill an array of holes around the inner edge, and cut a similar hole and holes in the keg. Now you will need a very thick gasket to sit on the lid, now you use nuts & bolts to lock them together. The gasket will sit outside of the bolts so there is no need for sealing.
The downside to this is that your opening hole in the keg is not as wide.
You could insulate the sides of it, I would say it is outputting/losing about 500W or more when its at full temp.

Paste is cheap usually hydrofluoric based. Those welds dont have any defects though. You only have to pickle stainless welds if they look ugly. It wouldnt hurt but I probably wouldn't bother

I have examined enough failed tanks in my time to convince me its very worthwhile, I would certainly do it if I had got that tank made up for me. People reading your post might get the impression it is purely cosmetic.
Many manufacturers will not bother treating the outside welds and just do the internal ones which will be in contact with water.

I think I'll treat the welds. Btw, all the welds are on the outside. I like your idea about the silicone baking sheets. I'll try to locate one today.

Most of the tanks I work with are welded on the outside too, but if they are only going to get one treatment of paste, then it's on the inside. Get it right into any crevices, if there are any.

Alright. Got her running on a decent idle at 15 psi. Used a silicone bead around the lip of the pot. Seems to have done the trick. Took about 50 min to steam out and get to 15. The amount of fuel it's using is just slightly higher than i use on a 941. So that is a great thing. Though it does take a considerable amount of fuel to get up to temp. All in all, it will still use less fuel in one run than 3 runs with a 941 and will triple my production rate.

I made a post with this question. Sorry I am posting it here too. I need an answer fast as I'm sterilizing as I typeI need a fast answer. My manual to my 75x says to let the valve stay open for 5 minutes to let air escape. Then to close it until it reaches 17 psi. The once it's there, open it again for 3 to 5 minutes. After that it tells you to start the clock.
Will this be a bad idea ?
What should I do?

it seems like 5 minutes at 17 psi (which would drop to 0)... is just a waste.
if you blast off the vapour so everything is superheated it seems like 30 seconds would be enough

Just let the air escape at the beginning for 3-5 minutes. Once up to pressure letting it escape rapidly could result in cracking the jar or make a mess inside the pc. I believe in letting pressure go down naturally.

Dude, yer supposed to begin the PC cycle by filling your PC with the proper amount of water, load contents to be sterilized, Vaseline seams, cap PC, turn heat to high, and open the stopcock. You then let the PC run on high until steam is hissing out of the stopcock. Once steam is hissing out of the stopcock you're to let steam hiss/escape out of the stopcock for 5 minutes. When sterilizing large substrates in bags, let steam escape from the stopcock for 10 minutes. The reason it's allowed for steam to escape the stopcock for 5-10 minutes before closing the stopcock, and letting steam pressure begin to rise is to ensure that the cores of the substrates are at even temperature with the outer layer of the substrate materials, so that everything inside of the PC can rise in temp/pressure at the same rate. No need to worry about water lost during this process, because the AA's don't lose water during their sterilization cycle, and are virtually silent while in operation.

I haven't done the stopcock mod on my 921 & 930 yet. But before I have been applying the weight I let steam blast out the vent pipe until pressure reaches about 2-2.5psi. Probably about 10 mins or so of steam venting.

I thought it was to ensure that all air is evacuated and replaced by steam to ensure proper sterilization?

Ok thanks. I made it through the process. I did exactly as you described. I was just stumped by what the manual said because it stressed the importance of the second air bleed. I understand now that this is only for tools mainly.
I knocked up 8 x 1 Quart jars and 4 large filter patch bags last night. I was up until 2 in the morning!! I froze my grain water. My magnetic stirrer I order will be here today or tomorrow and I plan on making some GWLC. Also ordered a high accuracy scale for agar recipes I plan on experimenting with.

How are you loading and unloading the bottom levels? Looks like you would have to dangle a midget by his feet in there to get the bottom levels unloaded.

I have 3 shelves in it. The first shelf is 10 inches from the bottom. So that area is just for water. Using the shelves i can comfortably fit 18 bags (each bag holding 6 quarts of grain). Without the 2nd and 3rd shelves, i could probably squeeze in another 6 or 7. I don't use this monster every day. I ran it daily for a week and prepping that much grain and going to work whooped me.
No, my gf came back. I'm kinda thinking I'm about ready to be single. She just won't fuck up and give me a way to make it seem like it's her fault. Women, you can't live with em....

Yeah... But you still haven't explained HOW you are loading and unloading those bottom levels without climbing into the cooker.
Do you have some kind of system to lift or lower each loaded shelf up and out of or into the cooker? Or did you hire a midget?
I been thinking of some kind of tong contraption that would grab each shelf. But in order for them to be manipulated this way you would have to have some notches cut in those shelves so that when you move them straight up and down they would clear the supports built into the wall of the cooker, then you just give the shelf a 1/4 turn to rest the shelves on the supports in a spot that isn't notched on the shelf.
Tell me you hired a midget!
