It says on the front to never open it until it has cooled or been depressurized.

it seems like 5 minutes at 17 psi (which would drop to 0)... is just a waste.
if you blast off the vapour so everything is superheated it seems like 30 seconds would be enough

Not to open it. To release the pressure valve on top.

Just let the air escape at the beginning for 3-5 minutes. Once up to pressure letting it escape rapidly could result in cracking the jar or make a mess inside the pc. I believe in letting pressure go down naturally.

Those use a different means of pressure regulation I believe. Pasty and Hamloaf both use them. They'd be the ones to ask.

5 minutes of venting still seems pointlessly wasteful.

I agree. I didn't do it. I did the initial air bleed and proceeded to sterilize. Thank you.

Dude, yer supposed to begin the PC cycle by filling your PC with the proper amount of water, load contents to be sterilized, Vaseline seams, cap PC, turn heat to high, and open the stopcock. You then let the PC run on high until steam is hissing out of the stopcock. Once steam is hissing out of the stopcock you're to let steam hiss/escape out of the stopcock for 5 minutes. When sterilizing large substrates in bags, let steam escape from the stopcock for 10 minutes. The reason it's allowed for steam to escape the stopcock for 5-10 minutes before closing the stopcock, and letting steam pressure begin to rise is to ensure that the cores of the substrates are at even temperature with the outer layer of the substrate materials, so that everything inside of the PC can rise in temp/pressure at the same rate. No need to worry about water lost during this process, because the AA's don't lose water during their sterilization cycle, and are virtually silent while in operation.

I haven't done the stopcock mod on my 921 & 930 yet. But before I have been applying the weight I let steam blast out the vent pipe until pressure reaches about 2-2.5psi. Probably about 10 mins or so of steam venting.

I thought it was to ensure that all air is evacuated and replaced by steam to ensure proper sterilization?

Ok thanks. I made it through the process. I did exactly as you described. I was just stumped by what the manual said because it stressed the importance of the second air bleed. I understand now that this is only for tools mainly.
I knocked up 8 x 1 Quart jars and 4 large filter patch bags last night. I was up until 2 in the morning!! I froze my grain water. My magnetic stirrer I order will be here today or tomorrow and I plan on making some GWLC. Also ordered a high accuracy scale for agar recipes I plan on experimenting with.

Is there a concern of the lid being aluminum and the body being stainless steel? My thought is that the metals would expand at different rates.

That was a concern of mine, but neither of the metals are getting THAT hot. So it's all groovy
