To Humboldt I go or not?
    #2173234 - 12/12/03 05:38 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi, let me first say I love the site.  I've been looking twice this month for psilocybe cyanescens in Golden Gate Park but unfortunately both times I came home empty handed.  I still have a lot of fun but I hate making the two-hour trip each way just to leave the park empty handed.  I was there today and the conditions couldn't have been more perfect but still no cyans.  I told myself that if I didn't find any today that I would make the trip to Humboldt to look some more.  However, I'd hate to take the long trip to Arcata/Eureka and come home with nothing.  Do you guys think it would be worth it for me drive all the way to Humboldt county which is about six hours away or would I be better off going back to Golden Gate Park later again this month?  It seems like people are having no problem finding them in S.F. from what I've read on the forum.  Maybe they've all been picked already?

The picture is from today in the park.  This mushroom was bluing all over the top but It looked a lot like something else I've been told was not psilocybe so I didn't pick it.  The barky mulch background habitat like the one you see in the picture is where I did the majority of my searching.  Am I not looking in the right place?  Obviously not I guess. :nonono:

In Humboldt, there are a lot of people who know about the growth of Ps. cyanescens. So, unless you know where to look, it might be hard to find any.

I think I'll be traveling up there sometime in the next few weeks to look for some with a friend who is from there. I can't wait

Mt. Tamilpai, any nice homes with mulched in gardens in the city, New office buildings, restaurants with gardens which are of course, man made.

You have to go into nice neighborhoods and look and then also in other public parks. eventually you might find some. They are there.

Recently someone posted pictures here from San Francisco.

not to be a dick but if you think that the shroom in your picture is showing signs of brusiing then maybe you should wait until someone will show you before you go out on your own. GGP is good for shrooms but you are looking in the wrong areas. That place will be picked over y dirty hippies left and right. Stick to the grassy areas where cyans can hide. I might be headed down there on sunday or maybe going to kirkwood for some snowboarding. Dont waist your time in a trip to humboldt unless you know someone up there that will show you were to go. They grow from sf to bc so you can go just north of sf and find them in a not so populated area where the hippies wont get there first. Go to parks! Ask the bums, its fun to make contact with them. Check tall dune grass near the ocean, thats one place where azures grow up north so why wouldnt cyans grow down here.

PM me! Maybe we can meet up if you are not a tweaker

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

angry: go up there, the area is soooo nice.
there have been good finds of cyans up there this season, even though i didn't manage to get any on my last trip.

i'm definately making another camping trip up that way in the spring for edibles, and again next fall for the actives .

Well I live right in the middle of Humboldt and I just got back from huntin P. Cyanescens today. Its perfect season right now, but the place I go to has really died out. People just dont know that when you pick them, dont pull up the whole root, or it damages everything. If you do come down here, I would be more than glad to help ya out. I have a few more places that I know of.

I am new to the eureka area. I went out to a well known spot with a friend yesterday but everything was totally scoured over. We found just about every other mushroom that grows there but the cyanescens... too many people know about them and go out real early and get all of them. I would go out more often but I dont own a vehicle so Im trapped at the house all day...

ALl you have to do is to keep walking around until you find them. Look in new apartment complex gardens, parks, office buildings, restautrants, any area with mulch is a possibility for cyans. Lawns for blue ringers. Since Gartz and i found an 8-0 pound patch in 1992 in Eugene, it is possible they have joined the northern California in lawns and/or mulch. ANd also, P. cyanofibrilosas are common in Eureka/Arcada area.

I still find little miserable patches of one or two fresh ounces growing her ein Seattle, yet there are probably many patches no one has found yet but are there.

it si also good to look in les conspicuous parts of your hunting area. look underbrush cover in the mulch, look in shaded areas, etc. a lot of mushroom hunters will overlook some things and pick only those that are right in plain sight. this will increase your odds of finding some to some degree. it is also good because areas such as brush cover will be more moist and will direct rain that runs off of the leaves.

And leaves which cover many shrooms can be full of shroom eating slugs who loove shrooms.

Here are two images taken in 1979 in the Freeway park of some P. stuntzii growing uner ivy, mixed with verbenas and strawberry plants in Steer-Co woodchips of alder.

See the slugs have eaten the tops of these shrooms.
