Michigan 'morel' poisonings grow to 16

KALAMAZOO, MI -- As the number of people poisoned by mushrooms they thought were morels climbs again this season, doctors caution people to seek medical treatment if they think the mushrooms they ate made them sick.

"We are up to 15 morel or false morel ingestions," said Dr. Cynthia Aaron, medical director of the poison center in Detroit. "No one else has been hospitalized" since the three or four cases earlier this season, she said. "I am also aware of another person who ate mushrooms and became very sick but was discharged home."

None of the mushrooms had been purchased; all had been foraged by people after morels, she said.

The mushroom hunting season generally extends through early summer; last year the poison center fielded calls from 46 morel-associated  poisonings, she said.

It's not always a case of mistaken identity.

"Even true morels can cause problems," Aaron said. "They are normally edible but if eaten in very large quantities or eaten raw or under-cooked, occasionally with alcohol," even true morels can make people sick, she said.

Also, even those people who eat morels frequently can become sensitized to them and begin to experience gastric problems or rashes, she said. Once they become sensitized, each time they eat the morel, the symptoms will recur.

When such cases occur, emergency room doctors may be the ones to catch them.

Dr. Greg Lendzion, an emergency room attending physician at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, said he was not at liberty to discuss the case of mushroom poisoning he saw during his residency years; he has not treated any cases of mushroom poisoning this season.

But he said that when a patient arrives in the ER with nausea, vomiting or other symptoms after eating mushrooms, they usually are quick to share information with doctors about whether mushrooms might be involved.

Doctors take a through history and physical and if mushroom toxicity is a possibility, "we will actually call poison control, believe it or not, and discuss it with them," Lendzion said. "We talk about what their recommendations are because we are not the experts."

Depending on the type of mushroom, the amount ingested and many other factors, symptoms could include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; hallucinations; sleepiness, dizziness or even seizure, he said.

Whatever the symptoms, whenever their onset-- immediately after eating mushrooms or several hours later -- Lendzion recommended that anyone who may be experiencing mushroom toxicity seek medical treatment.

"If you have symtoms and you have eaten mushrooms,"he said, "it's best to have the medical professionals work it out."

It most definitely is.... Black morels are known to cause upset stomachs in a few and maybe even slight food poisoning if really sensitive but I call bullshit. They were obviously consuming false morels... The first pic on slideshow is false morel...

A classic example.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Revelation 3:11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
