CHILLICOTHE — Undercover narcotic agents seized tens of thousands of dollars in drugs and cash at a music festival that each Memorial Day weekend imports campers and chemicals from around the country.

Covert officers with the Peoria Multi-County Narcotics Enforcement Group processed 28 arrests for at least felony drug possession at the Summer Camp Music Festival in Three Sisters Park. Most charges alleged intent to distribute the drugs or possession of large amounts likely to be dealt.

Federal attorneys and prosecutors with the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office work with police on site to charge suspects sometimes found with substances neither easy to identify nor categorize in statute.

Yet a handful of drugs, natural and synthetic, prove perennial favorites of the holiday partiers — and suppliers who satisfy demand. Common: LSD, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms and MDMA or Ecstasy.

Most suspects arrested since P-MEG operations commenced Thursday at the park face the highest-level drug felony possible: Class X, punishable by six to 30 years or more in prison. Nineteen people have that capital letter listed next to their names in court records.

“We really focused on the dealers,” said P-MEG Director Dave Briggs. “It’s still so obvious — it’s an open-air market.”

Music fans from out of state occasionally introduce exotic intoxicants at the gathering, but the P-MEG inventory only identified amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, hash and ketamine, a tranquilizer. It seems unlikely any of those drugs attended Summer Camp for the first time in 2015, Briggs said, though he noted the relative rarity of straight amphetamine in the local and national black markets.

Additionally, police last weekend did not encounter tanks of nitrous oxide, laughing gas frequently sold by balloon at clandestine locations on camp grounds often given away by the unmistakable sound of tank pressure releasing — a hollow swoosh that lasts a few seconds. The hiss could go unheeded, perhaps if not for throngs of campers suddenly milling about. In previous years, police simply took tanks as crowds scattered.

Among those charged were Lewis Morehead, 26, of Wilmington, Del., who faces 12 to 50 years in prison after being charged with possession of more than 600 hits of LSD with intent to deliver. Eric A. Sirvid, 21, of Orland Park and Bradley M. Zellers, 25, of Ottawa both face six to 30 years in prison after being charged with possession of more than 15 hits of LSD with intent to deliver .

All three were charged over the weekend and ordered held on bonds ranging from $100,000 to $250,000. They will next appear in court within the month for a preliminary hearing unless they are indicted by a grand jury. In that case, their court date would be changed.

Agents worked with a forensic chemist on site at the event to immediately determine the chemical composition of seized substances, Briggs said.

Cases initiated by P-MEG agents and a handful of other seizures made in conjunction with other police agencies yielded a cornucopia of psychoactive compounds: 1,490 hits LSD; 1,666.47 grams psilocybin (mushrooms); 10.2 grams amphetamine; 14.2 grams cocaine; 475.30 grams marijuana; 11 grams of hash or hash oil; 1.2 grams ketamine; 4.2 grams methamphetamine; and $6,057 cash.

“It’s a departure from what MEG agents usually do, with a different type of target population,” Briggs said. “It seemed like in the past when we would drive through the woods, the smell of marijuana would permeate everything. It didn’t seem as persistent this year.”

He added, “The crowd seemed to be well behaved.”

Other indicators hinted at an overall safe event for tens of thousands who camped, worked or otherwise provided services at the festival.

Of the preliminary count of 300 campers who sought treatment at the sprawling OSF Emergency Response Team tent, four patients required transport to a hospital — one with a pre-existing medical condition — said Team Director Troy Erbentraut.

“We saw a lot of sunburn, because no one expected the sun that first day,” he said. “Some had blisters.”

Medical staff additionally treated patients experiencing adverse drug reactions, but more often encountered the most common and potentially problematic symptom for any person dancing for hours at a festival. Even the cooler weather this year did not diminish dehydration treatment rates, Erbentrout said.

that is fucked up, didn't read that it was more than 15 hits but that is extremely low.  so fucked up.  reminds me of getting busted with just over 7g coke and being charged with intent to distribute.  fucking hate cops.

You cant have a free society and a drug free society.....

Why? Why do they care if people want to take psychedelics at a music festival?

Psychedelics are not addictive, most are not dangerous, and even if they are dangerous its not the governments job to decide that for me, it should be my choice to take the compounds, and if something bad happens that's part of the risk that I understood I was taking....

...now people are going to go to prison, and why? What did these people do that was so wrong?

why i have no sympathy for cops when they are shot. sorry, but you've caused ruin to so many lives and even though it's your job it's a reality that you are a part of the problem. like a nazi following orders. if i was a cop i'd never bust people for drugs.  do any cops exist like that?  never met a cool cop.

i know a cop, husband of wife's friend. we used to play online games and he came over with his wife for dinner a few times when i made tacos.  he was a true racist and only 26 years old at the time, 2 years in the force and that was when i learned how fucked the system and police force truly is.  yes, it is true, they are all racist assholes and love to eat tacos and drink heavily and be racist.  nothing wrong with that, this is America after all, but there is something wrong for arresting people for doing the same thing.  i couldn't fuck with that dude for long because because i'd get drunk and start peppering him with questions about drug use

i also had a coworker with a cop boyfriend that would regularly tell stories of said cop partying it up, smoking out, pinching stashes of people that he busted, etc. corruption runs through the entire police force.  fuck em all.

Refried, you made the obvious connection that prosecuting and imprisoning people for acts that are NOT crimes is  fascist behavior....

Psychedelic use is a victimless crime, when the Spanish came to the new world the attacked psychedelic cultures in the same way, you cant make a culture illegal, but you can make its practices into "crimes"...the psychedelic users of the new world could never conform to Spanish culture so long as the psychedelics were in use...the Spanish knew this....
This is nothing new, this is oppression and harassment of the same means, only its against a "drug culture"

Fucked up thing is it isn't freedom of religion, it's freedom to be Christian mostly as they get their wine and bread and trees and eggs. really need to clear things up in cultures and get rid of the term "religion" and use culture, get rid of god and lord and use the English term king. Relate these "religious" founders to the American founding fathers.

Never thought of it that way, but you're right, and thanks for making me feel smart!

mf's.  I do seriously think the fucking European conquistadors were some pieces of shit.  There's a little NA town, Acoma Pueblo I believe it's called, and I visited there once.  They have a history going back thousands of years.  Anyway, for daring to not completely bow down to the conquistadors when they arrived the conquistadors cut off the right foot of every man and boy in the village.  Now there's a huge statue commenmorating that bastard who ordered it in a city in Northern NM.  A few years back, some NA went in the middle of the night and sawed off his foot!  People were up in arms about the vandalism but I think that's about the funniest/saddest shit I've ever heard.

fuck man we need some change in this society considering this shit goes back roots from so long ago.

It's nothing new, they worship the image of the beast.. your intelligence scares them to death.. You can see them going into panic mode.

Even after the Spanish into modern times, the used marijuana as a means to deport Mexican workers during the depression, they used opium to harass the Chinese in the United States who were building the railroad, then when the hippies came again, you could not make being a hippie or being anti-war a crime, so they came after their practices and custums, they made LSD illegal and made marijuana penalties stricter than ever....

From the Spanish entering the new world (and before then even) to the 1960s and present day, this is a common form of harassment and oppression.

(Though now the US government sells illegal drugs to raise funds for foreign rebel armies to overthrow hostile governments....

...so this is why dangerous and addictive drugs are illegal, yet available on every street corner, the CIA and the DEA have massive interest in these things being contraband.....but these are drugs like cocaine and herion....psychedelics have never been money makers, these compounds are used as a means to oppress and harass folks who they see as "undesireable".....though the CIA and the DEA did and still do exploit psychedelics in MKULTRA like fashion, project midnight climax was an old one, but describes the model they use now....

In this documentary they start by describing psychedelic use since the begining of human history, then they detail the spanish conquistadors and explain how these things undermined their being able to conquer the people, then it goes into to Gordon wasson, psilocin, and so on.....its actually very informative, and by synchronicity just happens to cover a good deal of the things discussed on this thread. Its somewhat long, around 50 minutes, but a good film.

Jimmy Carter once said "the punishment for drugs should be no less damaging than the drug itself"

....maybe he realised the point tour demonstrating above....

...too bad nobody in Washington ever took the guy seriously.....then into the Reagan years when this attitude had completley dissappeared (Reagan sold cocaine to fund Nicaraguan contras all the while his wife is pushing her "just say no" campaign....)

The fucked up thing is just before Iran contra a CIA plane crashed in Nicaragua, it was full of kilo upon kilo of cocaine, all of which ended up being sold on American streets with Reagan and the CIAs knowledge....and they tell little white children "just say no" while they flood the ghettos with coke and heroin....
