calcium Carbonate and casing layer

Okay, so I strolled through Home Depot and Lowes and did not find calcium carbonate. Correct me if I am wrong, but the whole reason of adding calcium carbonate is to bring up the pH balance to a neutral from the peat moss being acidic. With that being said, can I use something else to raise the pH to neutral? I seen some other product that contain calcium to raise pH balance, would that work just the same as calcium carbonate?

In all actuality, you could use jiffy seed starter mix right out of the bag, same with coir and vermiculite.

Thanks for the recommendations, I think I am going to stick with the lime salt, in your opinion which do you think works better between the two.

I believe egg shells are a long term buffer just like gypsum not like lime.

I did a bunch of researching the other day and their main ingredient is calcium carbonate, not calcium sulfate. Farmers used egg shells like we use lime back in the day.
You need 1-2 spoonfuls of eggshells per qt of casing just like with regular lime

Okay thanks, but I plan on just purchasing lime salt, so lime salt and eggshells work the same way ?

calcium hydroxide = hydrated lime = VERY powerful.
calcium carbonate = limestone = power depends on size of particle. smaller particles work faster.
if u use limestone, make sure the bag feels like its powdered for the most part, and NOT pelletized. the bag i use says "granulated limestone"
old school casing is 1 part fine lime stone to 10 parts peat, verm added at any amount.
if using hydrated lime, best to grab Ph strips, but i use 1/2 teaspoon per qt, dissolved in the water used to hydrated the peat. others use 1 teaspoon per qt. depends on acidity of ur peat.
make sure u sift ur peat moss before using. the sticks and under decomposed matter in it are what will contaminate first.
