Keeping a journal? 1

I was wondering if journaling has made any significant difference to ya'll's lives? I am generally curious about this, and I am also trying to develop new methods of gratitude and mindfulness. I feel I dont cherish each day to the fullest and jounrals would help with that
Any tips or advice would be appreciated

I could never keep up on journals that I have started.
With today's tech we have all kinds of inline social media type of sites and forums that essentially provide the same function. There is no doubt that my grandkids will have access to my daily bullshit for many generations to come.
Thanks Facebook!

Ive been using the nic patch the last few days and my dreams intensity have went through the fucking roof. Last night I had what seemed like a 6 hour epic that involved infiltrating North Korean Military facilities as a spy in an attempt to assassinate Kim Jung Il. Eventually me and my partner (mark whalberg) got captured, and moments before we were about to be doused in petrol and burned alive we managed to steven seagull our way out of there and then proceeded to fight our way back out of the base before my alarm woke me up. It was fucking amazing.

I keep a journal but it's been a while since I've written anything worthwhile. It's mostly just rambling about my problems or songs I've written. That being said, I still recommend keeping one. I feel like it helps me keep my thoughts organized.

My handwritten journal gets more attention than either my pc or shroomery journal. I'll write things in it that catch my attention from books I've read, such as Voltaire's morals as stated in his novel Zadig (He basically defends his Socratic castigation)

Sometimes the Shroomery is my journal. I write some of my best dreams here too, though it's been a while. I've tried in the past to keep a physical journal but it wasn't my thing. I feel like that's what I have to think about anyway so writing it down takes away from my time to focus on the present. I do however have a couple notebooks full of poems, lyrics, progressions, trippy thoughts, drawings, ect. It's always a blast looking through them.

Keeping a journal is one of the best things a person can do to aid their self-development. Writing down your thoughts allows you to sculpt yourself into the individual you would like to become. It is a very powerful tool when used for self-actualization. I keep a journal with me everywhere I go, I write for at least two hours a day.
Since I keep it on me, whenever I have a random insight or string of ideas I am able to write them down and develop on them further at a later point in time. I have a journal for random thoughts, my day to day life, dreams, and fiction writing. I also keep what I call a "Morgue" book, which is just a journal that I write down other peoples ideas and quotes, you know, the ideas or essence of my heroes. When I get writers block or demotivated I peruse this morgue book to become re inspired.
Get an adventure backpack, some composition books, and some nice pens. Get out there and create yourself! The path of enlightenment lies before you.

Woah this was much more than I expected. I never expected anyone to keep a journal and these type of results

Is there a website that i can store my journal on? I don't want to have a paper copy that others could find. And I would hate to carry it with me when I travel. I also have TONS of embarrasing dreams so a journal that had a pasword would be great

Physically writing in your journal is important. It'll be nice to have a physical copy when the time comes to share your thoughts with a S/O.

Well thats a valid point. I figure I best just keep it in a safe place

Also, is it better to write end of the day or beginning of the day? I dont have time to carry it around and make notes like you. Although I will try

I never really understood a journal. I'm sure it couldn't hurt but I feel like pouring out shit on to paper isn't much of a solution. Most of what you do online is basically a journal. Considering imessage text goes straight to apple servers, they basically have your life journal encrypted. Although I don't think they do much with the data. Twitter is a journal as well as facebook. you could also consider any forum such as this a journal.

Think of it as taking a picture with words, except that picture can be a thought, an experience, a feeling or anything. The feeling of looking over past writing can be like looking at a photo album accumulated over any number of years but is not limited to this. If you have an interview or meeting coming up it can be a good place to brain storm and summarize thoughts.

Personally, I write in the morning after my walks. But anytime is a good time to write. All of my great ideas and thoughts flow into me in the early hours of a day, but it may be different for you. Whenever you feel inspired, just whip out a notebook and write. The time is irrelevant in most cases.

Exactly. You can't hind yourself from yourself. Thats why writing a personal journal is instrumental to personal growth.

I have done some research, and methods like journaling have a profound effect on many areas of life. I have kept a journal almost everyday for 2 weeks now and I feel much more positive. If I feel negative, I get as specific as possible about how or why I feel that way
Thanks all! This is a profoundly simple practice. It is above exercise on my personal lsit of "important habits" I try and keep.

I've been keeping a journal for a few years now. Pretty much from 17-22(current). As you can probably imagine, lots of ups and downs. The first page of my most recent journal contains a suicide note I wrote hours before jumping on a plane determined to make something of my life. Then I can track my mental break into Christianity, as well as my return faithlessness. Girls come and go, moods are good and bad, and I have realized the ebb and flow that is my life. I probably would have killed myself out of confusion had it not been for the perspective that habitual writing provides. Not trying to say I totally understand myself or anything like that, it's just that I can recognize patterns a little easier than before I started keeping track.
Now my entries are about going back to Europe to live with my Czech girlfriend. If I would've been able to read the shit that's in there now as a teenager, I'd probably cry. If I could just tell my past self to calm down, enjoy the ride, you're life isn't going to end in ruin, I probably wouldn't have entertained so many depressing thoughts.

Im not sure how you found this exact thread. Its quite old But writing in a jounral is amazing way to track your down mental health. See where things go, and let go of emotional baggage. It doesn't remove depressive slumps. It helps you understand them and come to terms with them

Amazing post man. I completely agree about journaling, though I have gotten quite out of the loop with it lately. I was looking at my journal and my last entry was well over a month ago. I'm probably gonna start writing more, I've started writing lyrics more often lately so I might as well get back into my journal.

writing is writing man. I think as long as you physically take a pen/pencil to some good ol' fashion paper, it will benefit your mind.
And fuck that pics are better than thoughts bullshit. All you're gonna do is post that shit to facebook so people can stroke your ego. Christ man. I like fb and feeling good about myself and all that, but I like to have personal memories as well. Not something that can be quantified by how many people like it.

This is probably more information than I should really share...
But I can't keep journals. I mean in a recap of the day sense, sure. But the shit that runs through my head, I don't want anyone to know and don't want any evidence of that shit. A journal would be pointless to me because I'd have to censor everything anyways.
I started a few through my teens, they never lasted long though.
Some things are just better left in your head or behind closed doors with a psychologist bound by patient confidentiality.

I write for posterity. As mentioned in a previous post, for those who struggle with any form of psychological distress, it can be relieving to have something for your family to read when it gets to that place. Knawmean?
But again, that's just me. I totally understand the censorship thing though. Different strokes...

IMO i would still try it if I were you. I have my electronic journal locked to an account name that has nothing that has to do with my real name and a password that I never use for other accounts and the password is a set of random letters that noone else knows. Noone could tie that journal to me

i update my journal every few days at most, and ive torn out several pages(from an ornate leather journal) after waking up and rereading it. i usually think 'holy shit, i dont want anyone reading this even if i'm dead'

I have several journals. They are mostly equations and playing around with mathematics. I also have some sketch books. I feel like it is good for my mind, like doing puzzles or cross-words.

curious; what is your college major? (I assume you are in college)
Also; I have been integrating a waking journal to track dreams. Huge insights into my well-being have been obtained

I keep one. Not daily or anything but I just type up a paragraph or two of noteworthy shit going on a couple times a month. You'd be surprised how much shit you forget, going back through it i'm always going "oh yeah" to shit I would have never remembered

If you want to keep your secrets secret and your privacy guarded then your best bet is well stashed paper. I consider the internet basically a loudspeaker. Then again, it all depends on your Threat Model.

Holy resurection.
But that was an interesting thread to read. I've often wanted to keep a journal but I've never had any fruition.

100% yes. I've made a thread/post or two about the benefits of keeping a journal. Always suggested.

I just started keeping a journal. If you ever wish you had a journal of the last 10 years, you'll probably feel that way 10 years from now.
So start writing, even if it's dumb stuff.
