Quastien about slow grow and funny smell (pics include)

I started this hobby when I was helping a Friend clean up his garage. He had this some equipment for growing mushrooms that he wanted to throw out when I said: Hey give it to me :-)
There was 4 unused sporesyringes at least 5 or 6 years old. I used them to inoculate 4 pint size jars PF-tec style, using one syringe for every jar, do to there age.
This is what happened: One jar never showed any grow. After 8 weeks 2 jars were finally full colonized; I then gave them 1 week extra. They smelt nice and fresh when opened, so I dunk & roll and gave birth:

2 days after birthing, the fruiting chamber started to smell a little funny though.... like a very light smell of urine and soil.
It is now day 7 after birthing and one of the cakes is pining:

The smell is still there, but haven got any worse. Am I having a contamination, or is it jus the wet perlite that is responsible for the smell? Please give your input on this
The last living jar is now on week 10 and looks like this

I would like to know what you think. Is the reason for the slow growth and the low quality of the mycelium (tomentose) because of the age of the spores?

Probably jus the myc metabolites that you're smelling. Unless you've made someone mad and they're pissing in your terrarium

The smell is most likely from the perlite, it smells a bit musty when its moist. I have about 3 jars in a similar place as you. I used pretty much whole syringes as I thought they were duds, none of them colonized except one, its been more than 8 weeks and it's just now fully colonized. The thing is though the substrate shrunk so much I don't think it has enough to fruit off of. Personally I am trashing that jar because I have many more, as for you I would wait it out and try to fruit it.
P.S. it looks like you are using fine vermiculite, almost dust like, this could be another reason for our failure as I used fine vermiculite and found similar colonizing times, try using a larger size next time.

Wait so you used an entire syringe for each cake?? Whether they were old or not, using a whole syringe would do more harm than good..
Maybe I'm misunderstanding?

My pining jar started out a pint size, but was only 1/2-pint when I gave it birth.

I actuely startet som new Jars op a good week ago, using a larger vermiculite grain size, one of them is already just about fully colonized, but it was started up on LC made from fresh spores, so who knows if it is the vermeculite or the new inoculant that make the differes?

Update:
Yesterday was harvest day, the pining cake gave 88 grams wet :-)

I disidet to take both cakes out off the FC and give everything a quick inspection. I found out that the non-pining-cake was really really wet, I think that I have bin misting too heavily. The bottom of it was really soaking and had a funny looking area:
The ammonia smell came from that great area, not from the perlite. Can any of you tell me what it is? And the possible reason for it? too much misting??
However, I dunked the healthy cake I toke out all the perlite and build it. I sprayed the stinky area of the unhealthy cake with 3% hydrogen peroxide and put it in a plastic bag.
I would like to know if I can put it back in the FC? I would really like to save it, it is Ecuador and it is the only Ecuador I have, so if it dos not survive the Ecuador strain will be extinct ( in my little hoby project that is :-) )
