Black Reishi(G. Formosanum) Spawn Time!!
    #21728193 - 05/27/15 10:42 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

6 quart jars of Black Reishi had been colonizing for 19 days and were a little past ready to go. Probably could have used them a week earlier. They were a bit thick up top, but still managed to bust up ok.

I made some bigass fuel pellet, alfalfa pellet, and spent coffee bags the other night. Each one is over 11lbs of sub. My kitchen scale only goes up to 11Lbs. The amounts in each bag is kinda random.. I hydrated the fuel pellets in a bucket, 15 cups of fuel pellets + 18 cups of rolling boil water. Hydrated the alfalfa in a separate bucket, 1 quart of pellets to 2 qts of rolling boil water. Once each bucket was hydrated for an hour I took a hand shovel and went to town on the buckets breaking them up. After the alfalfa was broken down, I added 6 cups of spent coffee grounds to the alfalfa and mixed well. Then I just shoveled that stuff into bags. It went sorta like, 6 scoops of wood, then 2-3 of alfalfa\coffee, etc. Some got more alfalfa\coffee than the others. Sterilized it all at 20psi for 2hrs.

I forgot to take pics before I busted up the grains, and after all the bags were spawned. Too much work to do at the time!

I dumped 2 qts of colonized wbs into each bigass bag.

Here is a pic I took in the middle of inoculation when I remembered to snap a pic.

One bag knocked up so far in the pic and all the grain jars are already busted up. The bags were a bit full making it a little difficult to shake and distribute the grains. But I got them somewhat distributed, the Reishi will still power through it. lol

More pics to come as things progress!

Cool man.

Do you have any pictures of the mycelium on agar? I traded for this culture a bit ago and was somewhat suspicious of what I saw on the plate....

I made some transfers from different sections and eventually inoculated a round of jars, - half of which seemed ok. - Eventually 6 outta 8 sawdust blocks went trich.
But the other two are good and ready to fruit. :hairmetal:

I'm anxious to see the outcome of your grow. Those are some big ass bags.

Yup, the mycelium looks way weird on agar. Here's a pic:

I have the plate at home that I began this grow from. Used half a plate to inoculate 1 jar, which colonized quickly and then I transferred to 6 more jars.
*EDIT* Here is the plate that this grow came from:

Yeah, the bags are huge. I ran out of my standard size bags and I have a bunch of these. I've been using them lately to make a fuckton of spawn. So I figured fuck it lets make some huge black reishi bags!!

Yes the mycelium is strange. A lot of people have been concerned about it, but I can confirm it is clean and the right culture, it is just very weak, possibly due to cryogenic storage.  I haven't tried growing it myself, I am good friends with the guy who sent them out, he has already tried growing it, it did not work out very well on larger bags, but he did get it to pin for him on agar.

I did a grow log of a Black reishi from Ecuador a while back, but it stalled out on me, I have not attempted either of the two newer black reishi yet, I am taking a short break from cultivation for a bit. The exotic species seem a bit difficult to grow. The one from Ecuador was very picky about its temperature and humidity.

G.formosanum is occasionally found on bamboo in the wild, perhaps adding bamboo to the substrate would be beneficial.

Best of luck with your attempt

Oh, G.formosanum is also a synonym for G.sinense, I am not sure why ATCC (the culturebank the culture came from) chose G.formosanum though. So when you read research discussing G.sinense it can be applied to G.formosanum as well.

Whoa that looks way different then the G.neo-japonicum I've been playing with.

I let a couple spawn jars go too far and they started pinning, I don't know  if they will do anything but I'm gonna leave them and see what happens.

Excited to see what yours do juiceh

If I recall correctly mine looked like this as they were originally colonizing the plate. After they sat for a bit the brown coloring came in.

Sorry for the lack of updates. The bags have just been sitting in the colonization room. This isn't a priority grow for me, more of a shits and giggles novelty.

I pulled the bags out to take some pics last night. They are about 95% colonized I'd say. There look to be a few spots on the blocks where the mycelium has a little difficulty fully colonizing, but I think it is from too much moisture. There is quite a bit of pooling liquids in the bags. Some of these same type of spots seems to have recovered and the mycelium filled it it. Kinda hard to get pictures of. There is pinning on the tops of the blocks.

Pics:

Here you can see some of the wet spots and how they are eventually filling in. If you look around the block you will notice areas that this has happened in before, but the mycelium has already filled them in and you can barely tell.

And some blobby pins:

Lotta liquid in this one:

Antler like growth growing up the side of this bag:

My plan is to let them colonize for another week or two. Then strip the bags and put them outside on top of a cinder block or something in a nice shady humid area behind my house where mushrooms thrive naturally. Not all that interested in antlers for this go round. I want big huge black conks! Wait, that didn't sound right...

Those look interesting!  I'm a lot further behind with a grain jar of this species.

Do you know if there'll be any danger to the ecosystem if this species drops spores outdoors since it's not a native species?  Or anyway to catch the spores from spreading?

That's a good point about shiitake.  MrCloudy once mentioned before a concern about growing non-native species of ganoderma outdoors, about possible unknown effects to the environment.  That's what caused my concern.

But if the area gets cold enough eventually and this is a tropical species, then any spores or mycelium probably wont survive the winter anyway?

Do you have a link to where he said that? If not I will just throw him a PM. If I remember correctly Alan said he didn't think introducing fungi to new places was a concern in the slightest. I find the topic interesting.

Thanks.

He said it by PM several months ago.  But maybe he just meant as a general rule equating fungi with the rule for non-native plants and animal species.  Yes, that's interesting to get different perspectives on this subject.

Isn't there some rule against non-native fungi species in Hawaii?  But they may have more of a fragile ecosystem than places with larger land masses?

My indoor grow vents to the outside. Spores of whatever I'm growing indoors get blown outside if they get to sporulate. I'm sure that goes for most grows. And spores get carried around the globe in the wind, so I'm not sure it's much of a concern.

Not to mention airplanes and whatnot. Global travel. But Amanita muscaria is invasive in Austrailia/NZ.

I believe he said they all breakdown organic material so the role is essentially the same. Don't quote me on that. I may have saved where he said that somewhere, I will have to look.

I was guessing it would be more to preserve the indigenous ganoderma and other mushrooms.  That's understandable about the traveling spores though.

Update:
On the top of the blocks the blobs have become antlers. There is quite a bit a liquid in 2 of the bags, 1 especially. The third bag even has some water in it but not much. 2 bags have fruits growing through the filter patch! I was going to let the antlers grow a bit before sticking the blocks outside. But the fruits coming through the patch changed that and I will be putting them outside this Thursday.

Gonna be stripping the bag off and putting these outside today I think. Yesterday I was handling the smaller bag and accidentally dropped it. :smbfacepalm: It landed on the bottom, so the fruits were untouched, but the block cracked a little. Might let it stay in the bag to repair itself a couple days. The block is swimming in fluid. So I dunno if it may just be better to just take it out now. Will post some more pics in a bit.

That bag wasn't as lucky as a bag of lucidum that fell off a shelf the other day, fucking landed right on the fruits. :frown:

Not really. Stripping the bags turned out to be a bad idea.

The fruits aborted and the blocks contamed out pretty hard.

I have a qt of spawn ready to g2g for the next attempt. I will update when I have more to add.

Seems to drake. It might be a substrate issue, or a fruiting temp one.
