Another cactus question, plant rotation/sun..
    #21728049 - 05/27/15 10:01 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Im in a new spot and the only place I can keep my cacti the sun only hits one side.  What's the proper procedure/timeline for rotating the cacti so that all sides get sun?

I was thinking 1/2 rotation each week.  I figured 1/4 turns would take too long to do a full rotation.  What's the standard practice for this situation?

I don't have a set schedule for it. But for the cacti I keep on my back porch I give em
a 180 degree turn about once or twice a week. All seems to be going well,

I don't turn mine. The labels tell me which way to put them back again when they are moved, or coming back out of the garage after winter dormancy. It adds unnecessary sunburn risk imo and might add stress to a plant.

They don't turn themselves in nature..
The growing points know which way they want to be!

:whathesaid:
I place all my pots so the labels are on the north side (square pots). They never shade the plant.

So in both cases of full sun, and only getting light on one side. You're saying leaving them alone, not turning is the best route?

If I didn't turn the ones on my porch, one side would stay untouched by sun light.
Am I wasting unnecessary time turning all these things?

Thats kind of what Im wondering because in that pic it looks like the backsides are still getting sun.  Mine are more like if you shot a light sideways at them.  By the time the sun gets over them my deck roof blocks it off.

The total amount of light that hits your plants won't increase by turning the pots. The side that remains facing the sun is most adjusted to receiving the light levels it is. Turning the pot to re-expose the rear might actually be lowering efficiency of the plant in the long term?

I just figured it would be like flipping fish sticks or frys in the oven so both sides get cooked

Man I never even thought about this. Hell I don't even label mine. Maybe I should. I got to put at least something so that i know the orientation.

Does anyone know how detrimental to a plant this is?

I had never really thought about it either.

I do not turn mine at all, and when they come out for the summer, they are put out however I feel (not necessarily the same as the year before).

They never get sunburned (the only time I had a sunburn was a new acquisition that had been shade grown it's whole life.
They also never lean toward the light. They just grow straight up.
Haven't noticed any problems so far... Like Mostly said, they don't get turned when they are in the ground so....

whats above the papery flesh on that Eileen? That looks like an awfully soft callous. Are you concerned it might tear and let infection in? Gratz on the pup

That's just scarring from sun burn, or some kind of trauma. Nothing to lose sleep over.
If it healed right, it should be well calloused even underneath the "papery flesh"...

What happened was I got "busy" and wasnt around to bring them in when the frosts hit last winter and the new growth got frost bitten and basically turned to liquid inside the cactus skin.

I tried removing the affected parts and it just kept getting infections, so I decided to say fuck it and watch what happened.  For science.  It eventually did what you see there and sealed itself off.  The brown you see is 'cracker dry'.  Its actually surprisingly ridgid.  And I dont want to go removing it and opening it up to infection again.  I have a feeling it will eventually fall off.

Here's the whole thing..

Thanks for the top view. That sounds like a solid idea. Better safe than sorry. Especially since that pup will grow nice and fat off a good stump like that. I suggest placing a flat smooth stone betweeb the pup and callous when the pup gets larger. This will keep it from growing to close and stabbing the cactus.

I found this yesterday...a 3-4 in bridgesii piece with no roots pupping out...
I've almost tossed it several times, glad I held onto it now....

My TBM is throwing 2 pups, and a 19 inch bridge cutting is throwing 2 pups. No roots on the cutting yet
