azurescens journal- UPDATED- first year PINS -UK!
#21728044 - 05/27/15 10:00 AM (9 years, 1 month ago) |

a few weeks ago i was gifted 2 colonised grains of ps.azurescens on cardboard from a fellow shroomery member(thanks ).
i had no wood chips on hand so broke up some old hard-wood by hand and soaked in water for a few hours.
these were put into a glass with the 2 colonised grains with no sterile technique.
8th of december there was visible mycelium growth.
30th of december 60% colonised (sorry for bad pic, theres lots more mycelium than is visible on the pic)

13th january transferred to large spawn bag with approx 5L of small beech chips in open air and pegged shut. beech chips soaked first in warm water only for 30 mins kept in outhouse. temps fluctuate between 2c and 13c
20th february low temps making colonisation slow and thin but its still moving even with low temps and no contam issues. i feel very removed from the grow and is boring lol wish i had done indoors and layered up the woodchips for faster growth and more participation but i am hoping by exposing to cold conditions during the winter it keeps contams at bay and also it tricks the mycelium into thinking it has lived a whole year already and hopefully as temps increase the mycelium will then take off and then fruit the first year.
hoping for fruits to start over again this winter, the same way but with stem butts in bags to eventually prepare several outdoor beds so i can move away from indoor cubes and onto ps.cyan, libs and azures and then a bed of ovoids for spring.
one thing i have learnt is i should have taken to agar and used to colonise more spawn first to speed things up ( i prevoiusly thought that azure mycelium was aggressive and moved fast) i would also slowly feed layers of chips to give myeslf something to do lol and dont breakup mycelium when spawning wood chips to the bulk bag as the azure mycelium works much better as a bigger organism and breaking up slowed the growth while individual colonys grow and then search to find each other and integrate with each other. a bigger mass has the shared energy and resourses to colonise new ground faster again if grains was used maybe i woulnt have noticed this problem as the grains could have been the energy source to power colonisation from the get go.
13th march still going slow. temps 6c - 16c max hasnt stalled. growth is thin veiny rhizomorphs and looks nothing like some recent azure grows with their fast growing thick tormentose mycelium. maybe the two grains i started with had crap genetics? hope they fruit!
each time the mycelium hits a new woodchip it fans out into a snowflake like mycelium on agar.
the mycelium looks thin like the pics in the first 15 seconds of this video-
13/3/2015 is this kind of growth normal for azures as most recent grows i have seen are so fluffy and full looking almost like frosting lol
is it just the low temps and do you think as it gets warmer things will improve? looking at others grows gets me worried lol! i expected it too be slower in the cold anyhow
hope i get fruits! my goal was to use ''a lack of sterile technique tek'' all the way to fruits, so far no contams not even cobweb so the cold is doing its job while the mycelium slowly colonise's.
27/05/2015
beech chips colonised now to move on... i took 1 container with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage. then mixed equal amounts of compost and beech chips in a bucket then added a few handfuls of perlite( approx <10%) and a few handfuls of garden loam (for living soil) i layed some of the soil mix into the bottom of the container. added the colonised beech chips. added another layer of beech chip soil mix. finally added a 1 inch layer of soil mix with only minimal wood chips in on top. watered well and sat outside in semi shade.all gone well so far but slow. spawn smelt strongly of mushrooms and no sign of any contams. the mycelium really thickened up on the bottom of the bag where metabolites collected like a rich nutrient soup that was slowly consumed by the myc. again i felt seperated from the whole grow, it has been slow and boring and uneventful and i literally have just left the myc to do its thing in privacy. fingers crossed oneday i may be posting first fruits this winter i plan on starting cultures of azure, cyan and ovoids on agar> grain > beech chips for outdoor beds but first if i am to continue my adventure on the shroomery i need to invest in a decent camera!! wish me luck and a big thanks to bubbles for starting me off with the grains of spawn all that time ago!! all advice, criticism and well wishers welcome update: 17/09/2015first pins!! yay just look a little light in colour and i think there may have been a mix up between ovoids and azures? so either early azures or late ovoids!! so my neglect tek seems to have worked and that and the container helped first year fruits!! what you think they are?? and thanks for watching and stay tuned....

azurescens journal UPDATE early pins.. look like ovoids?? [Re: Fantastic Mr. Fox]

first pins!! yay
just look a little light in colour and i think there may have been a mix up between ovoids and azures?
so either early azures or late ovoids!! the libs been real early this year uk too but my cyan havent responded yet.
so my neglect tek seems to have worked and that and the container helped first year fruits!! its only taken just under 3 months since spawning..very fast indeed. makes me suspicious.
what you think they are?? invaders or genuine psilocybes
if invaders then they came fast as its only been outside 2 and half months. and if azures then i guess the benificial bacteria and the cold period tricked them to fruit so soon well i hope so.... and thanks for watching and stay tuned.... sorry for shitty pics will get better ones later. anyway they have a light caramel colour, a gelatinous pellicle, the pileus is translucent and can see gills(striated margin) so i will say they prob will be hygrophanous caps. will update as the change and get better pics. btw there is 2 clusters of about 10-15 pins so far

Shit man, I'm just getting into exotics myself. If I had to guess I'd say azures but I'm a complete noob when it comes to exotics man. I think they're pretty hard to ditinguish from each other at pinning stage.

yeah i know just shocked at the light caps!
hope they make full grown, never sampled azzies yet.
anyone can grow these seriously... easier than cubes by a long shot. i used no sterile tek at all all open air. and no heat used at all to past/sterilize i think the benificial bacteria helped my success so far...

I hear they're one of the most potent species on the planet. My climate will not let me have outdoor beds, I can get some cubes to grow but not worth anything really. Id like to try an indoor grow of these one day, I'll probably fail but I'm pretty persistent lol. I know I'll would need another grow room to adjust the climate for their liking. And worst case scenario, it doesn't work out and I have another grow room just for pans

pans are my next project.
that PE and some truffles
all firsts for me and want to get out the way in next few months
this winter im going to start some ovoid, cyan and azures on agar for a proper run.
edit: if they azures then they are the fastest i have ever seen them fruit!! 2 and a half months from spawning!!
will have to try repeat with 1 tub done the same with cold trick and ben bacteria and then tub done normally and 1 with winter dormancy only
see if it is repeatable and if it was the dormancy period or the bacteria that allowed fruiting so early.
i didnt really expect fruits till next year.

thanks stopping by the support means alot, even the constructive criticism lol
yeah its a phone lol going to invest in a digital camera real soon.
tbh thats why i dont share my cube grows lol
so i value your opinion cron... you think they azures?
got to admitt 2 and a half months from spawning is a bit quick. makes me worried but all the signs say they are a psilocybe.
just gotta keep the slugs and snails away or withing mins they could be gone lol
