Thanks for tips! I'll see if there are any good books on my way home from work tomorrow.
I haven't found much near the bamboo either. I want to go to a forest of mostly cryptomeria (杉). I've read that's where gymns pop up a lot.
I'll be heading out again Saturday morning so I'll keep you all posted.

So just as I mentioned before I went farther away from the city than the last hunt, this time into the mountains outside the city rather than a park. I covered about 5 Kilometers up and down some really steep slopes, valleys, and creeks and found almost nothing. Certainly nothing that appeared to be active or spawned more than a 2 or 3 tiny fruits anyway. This time the forests were mostly made up of Cryptomeria Japonica (杉) which was according to plan, as I have read that Gyms tend to grow on them.
There were also many other types of trees though and even came across wood chip piles along the way.
Everything was very damp and humid, but I was saddened to find nothing of interest at all.
Tomorrow I plan to stop by the library and do a bit of research on mushrooms in the area.
I won't be able to hunt until the end of the month unfortunately.
If anyone has any knowledge of hunting around Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Ibaraki, or Gunma prefectures I'd be glad to here your input.
Thanks everyone.

Your first pic is a bunch of hinoki, not sugi as your kanji reads. It's really hard to tell those 2 trees apart except for the bark, size and how the needles are on branches. I've usually seen sugi near temples.
Usually those forests are so covered in fallen needles/branches that I've given up looking for mushrooms. I have found gyms one time in a hinoki forest. Sept 2013
I swear it looks like it's growing on hinoki.
Don't give up though because I've seen mushrooms in places I didn't expect.
That statue is strange, it doesn't look Japanese.
P.S You should check out Aokigahara near Mt. Fuji. I believe that forest to be unmanaged with a lot of old growth and a few dead bodies here and there

Hey guys. New here. I've been in Japan now for 7 years.
Just wondering if you have any updates or any luck with your hunts?

Honestly I haven't purposely been hunting for a while. I'll keep an eye out when walking outside of town. I should go for a hunt though, it's nice to get out.
