Are they dry enough yet?

Hey peeps, I'm new to all things shroomy; I've been drying my first lot of harvested P.subs in a simple set up using a non waxed cardboard box with a desiccant container in the corner of it for about 5 days now. The shrooms seem to be drying up but not 'cracker dry', in that they are still very mildly flexible, thy don't crack like biscuits. They've shrunk by about 50% and have a very papery feel to them. Just wondering if this is good enough or should they snap in half when bent?

Any amount of moisture will turn to mold if you put it in a plastic bag. I'd recommend closed paper bag with desiccant packs inside; don't plastic bag em til they crack. Nothing beats a dehydrator.

Roger that, I'll keep em going in the box for now. I looked for desiccant packs at Bunnings but could only find damprid containers. If I can get some desiccant packs I'll move them to a paper bag.
I'll probably buy a food dehydrator eventually.

desiccant packets only work to finish the drying process. I wish I could kill this idea.
Most of your moisture should be extracted with a regular fan. After that a store bought dehydrator is your best bet.

Thanks mate, thats probably why its taking a while longer. So just for future reference, how long should I fan dry them for initially before putting them in with desiccant?

Doesn't this vary a great deal depending on the humidity levels of your climate?
i.e. mushrooms will dry a lot faster in Phoenix than they will in New Orleans.

Actually the thing that will cause drying time to vary the most is mushroom size.

That, I imagine, is true.

Dehydrator is easiest, but you can dry em without one - it will take longer. Lay em outon paper and put a fan on em. Or build a simple desiccant chamber. Or you can go old school, thread them into a necklace with needle and string, and hang em above oven in your place. You dont need every piece of equipment money will buy, to enjoy this hobby.

I built a cage that sits on a box fan and i toss them in the cage for a day or two, and then I made a desiccant chamber and lock them in there for a day or two and I've had no issues

I used to use something similar but it just seemed to take so long!
