Long term planning for your life
    #21727020 - 05/26/15 11:39 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

How much long term planning do you do for your life choices? And what goes into those plans?

Basically, I'm 30. Not sure if I'll ever start a family, or buy a house or any of that. I work in construction and if I continue to do what I'm doing I could be done saving for retirement in 10 years and easily retired in 25 years thanks to a little compound interest. I've been feeling a lot of nervous energy lately, like its time for a change. But I'm not sure what changes to make and what needs fixing.

It seems like it is easier to make the choices when your back is up against the wall and you are forced to make a hard choice. When a choice has both positives and negatives and you have to determine what you value most, it becomes much more difficult. Sometimes there isn't a correct choice and your values will change over time.

Do you choose to buy a money pit of a house to spend time with your aging father?
Do you take a lateral career move to reduce earnings but increase the chance of starting a family?
What are the things you'll regret on your deathbed?

I suppose I'm just not ready for some of these decisions yet and in time it will become more clear.

I spend a fair bit of time deciding the general direction I want to move, but not the specifics. Most of the time I actually spend avoiding making decisions, because, as you said, it's tough, and I feel like it confines me.

I know that I want a partner/s and I know that I want to pursue long term ethical endeavors with said partner/s, and I have a few ideas for doing so, but nothing is set in concrete yet.
Planning doesn't always mean deciding. I have a lot of ideas for the future, but I won't decide which ones I choose to pursue until it is an appropriate time to do so.
