Anyone here work in the mental health field?
    #21726533 - 05/26/15 09:00 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Do any of you work in the mental health field?  Really anything related to it... as a counselor, psychiatrist, therapist, etc etc etc.

I'm kind of the type that likes to help people and I have always been interested in studying psychology and I have though about becoming a counselor, but I also have my own problems so I don't know what it's like to go through hell yourself and then become someone professionally helping others.  If you got a degree and knew your stuff but still had a few of your own problems imperfected (even if they got better) does a psychologist get screened by another psychologist or anything before they can help other people?  I know we all have are little issues so I know I may not have to be perfect to be able to help others, but I'm sure I have to be at least _this much_ stable right?  Does anyone have any cool success stories of how they conquered their own demons in order to help others?  I myself am not really looking to go too far with this right away, I'd like to start with a 4 year psychology/counseling degree and just be a simple counselor to start if a 4 year degree has low level openings for counselors (which I assume requires the least education of all psychology type work, compared to a psychiatrist for instance who needs a doctorate since they are a brain doctor basically).

Oh yea and if you take medication yourself (like mental health medication) are you allowed to be a counselor or anything?  I know there's the whole joke that people go into mental health fields because they're trying to find answers to their own problems, which I'm sure is true for some, but from some of the good counselors I've talked to they seem to be kind, breathe deeply and have no anxiety or other "weird" symptoms to show there is anything wrong with them.

I still have a few years before I'd get to the point of doing this so I have time to work on myself, but I would like to see how good of a candidate I would be to even go down this road or if instead it is just a futile effort for me.  Also not that I plan on abusing drugs, I'm already trying to get that under control now, but are there constant drug tests, or if I kept my life in order but still maybe dabbled occasionally with healthy and responsible moderation would I be fine?

Thanks.

In answer to your first question, I knew a girl who was going this route and she had to log so many hours as an 'apprentice' under someone who was certified.  Kind of like you have to do to become a pilot.. so they're watching you.

i work in the mental health field. worked as floor staff for 11-17 year olds at a shelter, then for a long time with 18-25 adults. Now i still work in the field but am more corporate.

decided not to pursue a masters because i have no interest in working the hours of a therapist. i want M-F with weekends guaranteed and no OT or on-call. that being said, i pursued my degree in psych to deal with problems i was going through back in the day, OCD, and anxiety. Wouldnt say its the reason I dont have those problems anymore, but it almost certainly helped. I would be more than capable of helping someone with similar issues, if I were to become a licensed therapist. When you can relate to others problems through personal experience it helps target your treatment that much more.

When you say "work", do you mean "patient"?

What level of education did you have when working as the floor staff?  What did you do?  I'm not very familiar with therapist hours, what are they like?  Are they not consistent like a 9 to 5?  Also is a therapist a "step up" from a counselor?  I wouldn't want to be on call either that sounds like doctor stuff.. I'd rather have a set schedule.  It's cool your studies helped yourself out a little, at least.  I can relate to being able to connect with people better if you've shared similar issues.

Is that a joke?  Serious question I can't tell.  If it is it is kind of funny haha, but I don't really know what else to say

I'm talking about the people who try to help the patients.
