How to beat overlay?
    #2172641 - 12/12/03 11:18 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Mr. Anderson currently has 2 casings that definitely have an overlay "problem". The mycelium that has taken over the surface is very hard and looks like coral.  :frown:

Mr. Anderson broke down and both dunked the casings (they were very dry) and then deep scratched them with a sterile fork. The overlay has just come back and taken over more of the surface of the casing. In the meantime other casings have pinned, fruited, and are currently working on their second flush. Is there any hope in saving the overlayed casings or should Mr. Anderson just look into those tea recipes that use dead casings?

You need to be adding a thicker casing layer then -- it shouldn't be colonizing the whole casing. You added more casing right after you deep scratched? How thick?

I guess you could scratch again and add more casing.... If it just happened, though, you could probably just throw some more casing on top. If it is all hard and matted, though, and takes up the majority of the casing surface, you'll need to scratch again.

Thanks micro - that's the funny thing, all of the other casings are fine and all have the same size casing layer. Oh well. Mr. Anderson will rescratch later today (may try to remove some of the really hard overlay too) and put some more casing mix on top.

Again, thanks for the help.

By "I", I of course mean a good friend of mine who happens to live in the fine city of Amsterdam. "I" is just so less awkward.

Something that did work with 3 of my casings:

Casing overlayed----scratch------mist H2O/H2O2-----put new moist sterilized casing material-----put in the bin or wherever (don?t need to incubate)------mist when dry.
Expect 1-2 weeks recover.
